Goals for 2019
« on: Nov 16, 2018, 06:38 PM »
Just curious if any of you guys have sets some goals from the upcoming season? I Can’t wait to walk on water again. One of my goals is to catch a walleye through the ice. What are you looking forward to?

My goal this year is to be more organized on the ice.  Seemed like last year I couldn't seem to get it together and went through one gong show after another.

My goal this year is to get our big Champlain trip with the fellas in before ice out. Got robbed last year by an early thaw to what was shaping up to be an epic season.

Also much bigger focus on jigging this year and have a sub goal of catching a pike on a jig rod (preferably a bunch of them.)

Caught a PB 42” 22 lb 2 oz pike last season. So beat that in either length or weight. Any walleye. Any pin trout. Any Muskie.  ;D

my goal this year is to fish at least once a week, and get as many people out with me. as far as fish PB's, I would like to catch a bass over 8lbs, that will be difficult but Iv'e never had one over 8, staying safe is always a goal

My goal is the same as last year. Try to get my first Walleye thru the Ice. Fish at least 3 times a week, with 1 of those days being on a lake I have never fished, or haven't fished in 10 years.
Thank you Lord for thinkin bout me. I'm alive and doin fine!!!!!!

My goals are to hit the big lakes if possible.  Erie and Ontario.  If not I may take a road trip to Milwaukee.  20lb laker would be ideal too.

I think I'll be traveling a lot more once I buy the iceducer for my Helix 5.  I think I've checked off a lot of the boxes around here.

My goal around here is to catch that pike I lost at Onota that was bigger than my 18lber I got the week before.  Its going to be hard to do especially since I don't like fishing Onota that much bc it can be terribly slow.

Learn how to get better at jigging with no electeonics

It's not as hard as you might think, but you have to put in the time to get results.

Depending on the species, the tactic is generally the same.
You cut a hole in an area you presume/hope will be productive.
Either start from the top to the bottom, or bottom to top, and jig slowly at 5-10" intervals until you get a strike.
Once you know where in the water column the fish are staging at, you can drop back down to the general depth repeatedly.
The main things to remember is that different lures require different jigging speeds to obtain the correct action you desire, so that is where you will put in the time.

One thing to keep in mind, which I learned first-hand, is that you might be getting sunfish and perch as the initial bites and the bite may suddenly "shut off" for no reason....well the reason is usually because a larger fish/predator has come to snag a potential meal.
I cannot recall the number of times I've been jigging with a micro-jig for crappie and sunfish and ended up landing a 3-5lb. bass or pickerel.
Heck, as far as I can tell (from prior experiences) EVERYTHING under the ice will take a "free meal" when the chance is provided, so jigging tends to be very productive.

Hope this is helpful when the time comes...

I'd like to take at least one person who fishes and introduce them to Ice fishing for the first time.  I took a guy from work out last year who has fished all his life but never on ice.  He is originally from Memphis TN so it was all new to him.  We had a wonderful time and he got two Rainbows his first time out and he really enjoyed it.  His wife was a bit apprehensive since she grew up in Arkansas and walking on ice was a bit different so she texted him frequently to see if he was dead yet but she got over it eventually.  The only thing better would be to introduce some kids to the sport.

Nice to hear the stories about introducing new folks to the sport! Hoping for a pike this year and a good family trip with the kids.

To get on the ice at least three times a week. Just an hour with a jigging rod at the very least.

To catch my first walleye and/or pike, even if it's a tiny throwback.

First post here on IS. My goal is very basic: to simply get out there after being away from ice fishing for more than 25 years. I've been reading here for a while and decided to give it a whirl again. Looking to jig only, no tip ups, focusing on panfish.
Maybe someday I'll think of something clever to write here...but I doubt it.
