compared to a jumbo perch? id say so.  i guess you could eat them.  i mixed in a rockbass with a bunch of gills once, just to see if i could tell, and i couldnt...they have this smell that would indicate to me theyre alittle oily, but some people eat them.  kinda like a bass.  i think ppl sometimes eat bass lol

I have to confess that sweetie and I ate small-mouthed bass; we were on an extended canoe trip in a wilderness area...that was all we caught
that day so it was supper...he cleaned it properly  and it wasn't bad.

Blackened redfish is awesome.  I think the "big three" starting with the smelliest would be Florida gar, bowfin and carp; in that order

hey guys!!!
a few interesting things....
1st,  could it be that american fish smell worse than canadian fish????
something to do with warmer water perhaps???
i have never encountered a stinky fish as you all are describing.
2nd,  little old lady, are you opening the guts of those lings when you clean them??? if so, it's probably the source of the stench and it is unneccessary. we just cut off the tail fillet and backstrap and do not touch the guts. worth a try???
and 3rd,  does bait count as my stinkiest fish vote???
i once forgot a jumbo bag of smelts under my bro's truck seat on our last ice trip of the season. the truck was then parked for months til mid summer when they went to use it. the stank nearly physically knocked us on our a$$es!!! NOT reccommended!!!
my $0.02
cheers all!!!!  gw

TOYO - Bar none this fish is the champion of stink! When its frying the smell will actually drive me out of the house. It is washed in salt water, salted some more, then dried in the sun , honest to God, until it looks like one of the dried up fish you find laying on the shore in summer. No kidding, the smell is unlike anything I've ever experienced before. You could use Limburger cheese as an air freshener after frying Toyo in the house! My wife thinks it is delicious and loves this stuff.

None of what any of you describe smell as bad as the skunk I've had on half my hardwater trips this season, which is, sadly, a very small number.

Manitoba and a bit into SK seem to be the extent of their range.  They are a member of the sunfish family (same as smallmouth bass).  They don't occupy all of our waters, so they don't have the same reputation as bait thieves here as perch do.  When you are in the right spot, they are a great fish for the kids.

One day fishing last spring (I think it was anyway, possibly the year before), I was at one of our local rockie hot spots...my wife had to go to work that Saturday...I got the three kids set up and the youngest (turning 7 shortly) had a rockie on before I had my rod ready.  It wasn't a fast and furious day, but everyone caught fish...made my wife jealous, but she is the only one in the family so far who has caught one over 10".

Yes...I think she has 2 to her credit...but my memory might be wrong.  Actually, I just verified online...she has two rockies and two carp...both are species I don't have yet for MA.

i think that minnows and smelts left in the back of the snowmobile for a month last march. smell didnt go away for a couple months :-\ i dont mind the smell of fish usually and havent caught a "smelly" one so far. but i fish for alot of species that are generally over looked, carp mainly, burbot, tullibee and suckers. i miss the smell of carp, its been to long since i have landed one. carp and walleye are the only thing that make me look forward to summer, besides pike on topwater baits.

By far the stink fish king has to go to the Lake Ontario Sheepshead or fresh water Drum.  I live about 3 miles from Lake Ontario.  During the post spawn, you can murder them off of the Charlotte and Summerville piers here in Rochester.  We're talking fish weighing between 5-15lbs on just about any type of spoon or crank bait every other cast. Lots of spectators walking down the pier like to stop and watch you haul in these smelly monsters. The smell is almost unbearable but it's some cheap fun and you can bet come the end of June till Mid July, I'll be out there as often as I can.  Just hold your nose and cast!! :roflmao: :roflmao:

if you are talking live fish, I have to say burbot and pike are nowhere near the top.  Pike smells worse than burbot and burbot really only stink when they crap all over the place (which is all the time) or after they are dead for a while.  The worst fish I have ever smelled is a starry flounder, they have the most pungent odor that they sucreat through their skin, reminds me alot of urea and its very strong.  When you catch one in the front of the boat you can smell them in the back of the boat, the oder is that potent.

Smelliest fish is by a very large margin common carp or buffalo carp! In the summer I shoot bowfishing carp tournaments, you go out all day with 800 pounds of dead (or semi-dead) carp in barrels and littered all over the bottom of your boat!! Then when you get one that won't stop floppin around in the barrel and keeps scarin all the others your driftin up to to shoot, you gotta club em, most of the time you get a nice big face full of carp slime/blood/brains! That's enough to gag a maggot!!!! (For those who don't know bowfishing is shooting fish with a bow and arrow, arrow is attached to a string on some type of reel on the bow) Here's a 25 pounder I stuck a few years back!!!

I hasvent ead all the posts but i am going to have to say halibut slime is the nastyist stuff.  The ammount of slime that comes off a big halibut is nasty.  I had to burn some raingear after a trip to alaska.  I see why the guides pushed for the rubberized rain gear.

gizzard shad. caught one thru the ice two years ago. smelled horrible.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."
