Northeast Indiana Lakes
« on: Jan 18, 2019, 01:36 PM »
Heading up to Clear Lake today, hoping to fish a few channels. Saw a couple guys via webcams in the west bay this week, but they were only 20 yards from shore. My guess is that the main lake is still not safe especially with the snow.

Anyone else finding safe ice up in that region??

Checked Pine knob/meteer lake in lagrange county this morning and it was about 2" of ice. Still sketchy the further you go out. Will try tomorrow depending on snow.

Checked a few more smaller lakes again in lagrange county this morning. Had a good 3-4 inches of ice in some spots but others were only 1.5-2 inches thick. Hopefully will see some consistent ice over next weekend.

Saturday was very sloppy and wet even though there was 3" solid black ice underneath the slush. Sunday was much better. Got into some nice gills and a few crappie.

Coldwater lake north end has snow still on, most lakes snow pushed ice down, not there, watch where snow is really insulated it. Spud first !!

Know a guy on 4" yesterday moved, spudded as he went and went through. He wasn't alone and they got him out.

Replying to my own post. At 75 I still love ice fishin, but about the only thing you get with age is some wisdom.   My way of thinking is if I got to carry a spud to check the safety of the ice I got no business being out there. Just my two cents.  From a cranky ol man.  Got to be here for next season. Good luck guys and stay safe.

That's exactly how I see it also ! As I said on another post , I e been ice fishing for I've 25 years and have never used a spud... And have only been I. The drink once and that was when u was a kid I walked threw drifted snow next to shore on Loomis and went it to my knee.
