one flag day
« on: Jan 19, 2008, 02:14 PM »
Well, I couldn't find any smelt, so I changed my plan today and took my girlfriend to crescent pond.  It was a slow day, very breezy but sunny and nice.  We got one flag, and my girlfriend caught her first fish through the ice.  It was a 22" pickerel.  She got really excited b/c it was a lot bigger than anything she had caught on her fly rod.  Great day to be out.

I'm suprised you can get a fly-fisher out on the ice.  They always seem to be de-grading ice fishing.(You guys kill all the fish, five traps, blah blah blah.)

Here's a pic.  I just figured out that I could email pictures to myself from my phone, and they actually come out okay.  I'm real proud.  There's nothing to scale the fish by, except that you can see the tip of my snowshoe.

Theres alot of guys that flyfish and icefish. I certainly love to do both. Just because you hear some of the most vocal flyfishermen speaking against icefishing doesn't mean they speak for everyone.

I live for flyfishing during spring, summer and fall and live for ice fishing in the winter.  I've even been known to hook on a worm (ugh!) every now and then.   ;D  You're right Rude the Dude, some flyfishermen are quite opinionated just like some baitfishermen are opinionated about flyfishermen.  I'd rather just fish than worry about others regarding how they feel about my methods.   Doesn't matter, as long as you are enjoying the outdoors.  RayfromMaine, hard to get excited about pickeral but that is a nice looking fish.  Used to fish for them exclusively when I was a kid on Grahm Lake.  We used to pull some hogs out of the ice.  Clean them right and they're darn good eating.
