I can honestly say I don't care much for the snow. It is all about the Ice! Its all gone around here and I wont be seeing any fishable ice till late December. As is normally the case in these parts. Keep up the good work Drifter. Looking good.

Made it back out to the cabin this Easter Monday and did a little work.
Got a bunch on notches done in the back wall studs to let in my loft floor rim board.
Arms were about ready to fall off after cutting all of them with my heavy Skil saw.   :pinch:

Also got the first board in place.

Sounds like you need to pick up one of those little light weight 5 inch saws. I bought one after I cut off the ends of the 2x10 floor joists on a huge basement over hang one time. Seems like it was 40x80 feet if my memory is not totally failing me. My commercial skill saw weighed a ton.

I was thinking that with every notch I cut.
It's now on the list.
Was thinking about the Rockwell Versacut 3 3/8" saw.
And it's on sale too.

Cool tool, Drifter. I noticed it has a max cut depth of 1 1/6". Down here in the lower 48 2x material is generally 1 1/2" thick so it would not allow for the rim joist to be fully recessed into the stud.

You could also use a router or even a dado blade on the circular saw to make the notch that much faster.

I was thinking the same about the depth of cut with the versa saw. If you do like I do to get a straight eave I strike a chalk line then use me 5 inch to cut the ends off so they are straight, the versa saw is not going to get it done.

I am not sure about the name of the one I have but I think it is a Skill. It is a left handed cutting saw that takes some getting used to. I think my son has mine so I can not go look for sure.

Actually it will do 2" with a 4 1/2" blade.

Seems the description on the website is incorrect.
In order to use a 4 1/2" blade I will need to get a different model.
This one, that's also on sale.

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/rockwell-compact-circular-saw-4-1-2-in-0548365p.html#.VvsYk_krKM8

It doesn't come with the extra blades and carry bag though.

Just curious as to why your notching the board into the studs? Not being a smart alec. is it for the look? 4  31/4 inch spikes per stud would more than meet code for hanging a rim joist on the wall.
I've just never done it that way.

It's because I balloon framed the cabin.
With traditional platform framing the rim joist would be sitting on top of the first floor top plate for structural support.
In balloon framing the rim joist needs to be let into the studs in order to provide the same support.

Well the winter is mostly done with the days becoming longer and brighter so it's time to start preparing for this years cabin building exercise.
I got out to the property in January to check out how my place survived over the winter.
Just like I left it but with snow everywhere.  :)

I have been out to the cabin the last couple of weeks hauling tools and supplies as well as packing and grooming trail for the heavy work.

Looks like ice road trucker for you.

Well today didn't go exactly as planned. Got my doors, couches and these two windows up to the cabin. While taking these windows up I going a bit too slow and got stuck at the last section of my hill and spun the track and buried the sled. Ended up catching a piece of gravel with the track and it hit my rad and put a hole in it.
Day over!!!!      :'(

Tomorrow I'll have to figure out hot to get the rad out of my sled and hopefully it can be welded up.

Have to borrow a buddies sled next week and get my windows in before it's too late.

Time for rum and hockey!!!

Drifter ditto OldSailors comments , I thought you were going to tell us one of the windows got damaged in transport to the cabin . I'm assuming you carry a cell or satellite phone among your gear  to be able to call for help if you have a major problem. May your snow mobile's radiator not be to badly damaged . One day this incident will be one of the cabin build stories you will share with friends.

Yeah, no biggie. Stuff happens, just roll with it and life will be good.
It's only 1/2 mile walk from the cabin to the truck in the winter once the ice road is in.
An easy walk on my packed snowmobile trail.
;)2
I have good cell service at the property so that's always good.

Hauled material until the sled broke then went home.
Worked on the sled today. She's done for the rest of the season.
Have arranged with a buddy to use his next weekend.

Drifter sorry to read your sled is out of service until next season. I was not sure how isolated your cabin location was even a 1/2 mile walk can be brutal during the winter weather in your area.
