Black Bullheads
« on: Dec 06, 2013, 03:23 PM »
So this will be an interesting post as I am sure that hardly anyone here fishes for them ;)  Would anyone near the Kalispell area know where to go to fish for these small catfish?

How do you fish for them/what to use?  Is there a big population of them there

I haven't fished for them in well over 20 years but back then night fishing at Mcwinneger with worms we would catch 100 each a night. Ugly nasty looking little fish! lol

Come west of the divide and you can take all of them you want. They are the bane of my existence when fishing the yellowstone or tongue river. Litterally pull 2 or 3 in at a time. They will eat anything that fits in there mouth even each other and breed like rats. Bait/hook stealers is all they are. Gut hook themselves everytime. They have cost me 100's of $ in tackle over the years haha. Coons really like them  ;D

I fish for them at night down here on the Clark Fork reservoirs in summer. They taste as good as any other catfish. I have never ice fished for them though.

I have heard rumors that they burrow in the mud during the winter and don't eat…not sure how much truth there is to that.

I have caught one last year jigging through the ice at Shady Lane Pond in Kalispell.  That was my only time catching one
