I've had my ION for five season or so (GEN1 first year with reverse) and yesterday my auger started and stopped as I was drilling a hole. Battery was fully charged and in a bag with hand warmer as per usual so Im guessing it might be time to replace it or is something else going on?

There’s a leaf spring in the handle with the switch that works with the safety interlock button I believe. Take the switch handle apart and see if that spring needs repositioned or replaced. I got a couple new ones from the manufacture. That’s my quick explanation. I can give more detail later if needed. The battery will go bad eventually but that doesn’t sound like your problem.
-
Sorry, to be clear, it sounds like the safety interlock is not staying engaged when you press it because the internal spring is failing. That’s the actual issue.
-
I have a spare battery and it works as it should when I put that one in

Sounds like you answered your own question then.

I ran into the same issue. I completely removed the safety mechanism and like it much better. The safety mechanism is complete overkill IMO. You have battery drills that can tear your arm off that don't have a safety switch yet Ion's have one.

Don’t have a drill in this fight, but would be careful of disabling a safety mechanism on anything. If for some reason something goes wrong you wouldn’t have much of an argument.
Keep it safe! JDL

I am real good at disassembling things. Reassembling is the challenge.

Mine is doing the same (5 years old) with a full charge. Bought a new battery $67 from SG a couple weeks ago and is okay now. ???

Or just mount the auger to a cordless drill.
Much better power option.
I sold my ion battery and charger and put it towards a Rigid octane with 9Ah batteries.
Then threw the ion power unit in the dumpster.
Never looked back.

Don't you run the risk of a running auger tearing up your sled or, worse, you??
-
As far as disabling safeties goes, most of the guys I know who do stuff like that are nicknamed "Stubs", or "Stumpy" or "Stupid"...

and here’s a guy that could have used that power head.

Zeker259 I m not familiar with SG where you bought the battery from for $67. I can’t find one for less than 200 bucks here in Manitoba. What is SG?
-
My Ion can start and stop when there is a lot of slush/ice not clearing from the hole. I like to lift several times when I am drilling to help clear the hole. It gets worse when it is very wet in the hole, or right when I am about to break through the bottom. Might not be the issue but maybe it's helpful.
-
If it works fine with the new battery and not well with the old battery, then what is the question?????
-
Seems easy for me too.

I would bet that this is just a battery issue. I replaced the battery and it does not do this anymore. It has been over 3 years now since I had this issue. Nez

My son's ION Gen 2 started to stop and start yesterday it got to bad to use so he took it back to the truck and brought my 40 volt strike master out to finish the day . We bought both the same day at Tackle Shack 2 years ago this is 3rd season . Don't know what he will do with it . But I still have 2 Eskimo gas augers one being a z51 that will totally blow the doors off any electric made .
