On a polar tip up what is the pen clip ??? on the shaft for?

Peterson's has a link to a Polar Tip Up video that may be useful. I have not viewed the video in a while. If you scroll down the page at Peterson's a ways, you will find a link to the video where you can select the viewing options of modem or DSL.

I have used the pen clip to hold the hook on some occasions.    Otherwise I am not totally sure what the clip is for either.   
It doesn't matter if you didn't catch anything as long as you had fun.
