Yes it does help thank you. I had just seen pics thru this thread and some had 3ft of clear before leader and some did not. Wasnt sure of the effect the heavy black line would have 6-8" from bait. Have a outing on the ice and thought I'd just let one set while fishing. Who knows, maybe I'll have some rookie luck. I have certainly learned alot here, now it's up to the fish.

Dacron to leader.......leader length differs between what species you are fishing!

This is how my tip ups are rigged now.

Spool > 30 lb line > Steel leader > Mono leader

If I'm fishing for northern I take off the mono leader.

It depends on the water depth/water color/species fished for to an extent.

I personally wouldnt go any shorter than 20 inches on the leaders no matter what.

So deeper the water you are fishing the longer the leader?

For me; running line (Dacron), Snap-Swivel, 40lb Floro with quick strike rig.

3-4 ft, which is longer than it needs to be, but if the leader is marked up by a fish, I have plenty to cut back and work with...

Well I use a longer leader when fishing shallow for trout. The leader is basicly the only thing in the water, so they dont "see" the braid.

If you are fishing for pike, it wont matter too much as they will usually eat any damn thing. LOL
