I spear pike only. Our options in Minnesota are fairly limited compared to Michigan. We can spear Pike, Catfish, Whitefish, and rough fish. I have never seen a Whitefish yet, but when I do I will definately wet the spear. My buddy likes to run his smoker and I hear Whitefish and Tullibee and excellent in the smoker.

I cant see how any one could spear a whitefish cause they like to be on bottom in real deep water. Also the same goes for Eelpout they like to be rite on bottom in deep water but I have heard of them being speared before. Hey if you get a Whitefish consider just frying it cause they are great table fair but don't try and freeze them cause they go to mush.

The main place I go, we set up in about 5 - 8 fow, sometimes 10. It all depends on the visibility.

If you cant see bottom than you are to deep although I have heard of guys doing that, I'm not one of them so NO more than 13 ft cause the water that pike like to live in is almost always murky.

Maybe that's why I never see them. I was talking to a guy who had just returned from a spearing trip at Heath's resort on the Whitefish chain of lakes and he said his son and he got 6 Whitefish over the weekend spearing in 12 FOW.
