COLD GAS AUGER
« on: Jan 19, 2022, 03:06 PM »
My auger gets cranky after sitting for a bit. Becomes way too labor intensive to start it for one or two new holes.

Anybody ever try wrapping the engine in a towel or blanket to keep it warm? Sounds too simple to actually work.

I have a friend that set his on fire while heating it over a propane stove.

what brand is it
couple pushes on the primer, full choke and start
then 1/2 choke to none
warmup for a minute
works good on my 50yr old jiffy  ;D
may just need carb adjustment or rebuild
gas sucks today and goes bad
good luck and report back

I would say it's more than likely a carb issue.  Ran an Eskimo Z51 for 9 years and never had a hard time starting it no matter how cold it got.

Look into idle screw adjustments for your auger

Once you get it going switch to the Truefuel canned gas. We fought for years with the same hard starting and running smoothly. This stuff works much better year after year. Now we got old and lazy and went to the Ion green monster.

Definitely try the engineered fuel like the true fuel. Works wonders.

I never get that involved in online engine trouble shooting because its easier to diagnose hands on but the carb definitely needs adjusting.its either lean or rich.if it starts and runs better on half choke or full choke its lean and need to get more fuel.if it doesnt need choke or floods easy when choked its rich.my  cold starting procedure for any auger is prime it a few times, full choke and if it starts let it warm up on half choke.on augers in really cold weather i tend to think its a lean condition.jmo

New carbs are cheap enough if adjustments dont work, run High test only or the canned...Good gas is key.. Ion is also an option, the older I get the more weight my Jiffy gains..Fish on!!

Hand auger on a milwaukee drill. Fast easy and light 8inch hole
