Small Boat Harbor (Lake Erie)
« on: Feb 03, 2021, 10:38 AM »
Anyone have ice conditions for Small Boat Harbor?  I know it's called Safe Harbor or something else now but, it will always be Small Boat Harbor to me!!
Looking to work some of the bugs out and was hoping to get out local this weekend.
Thanks for any info!!!  :)

The shore ice was pretty bad by the launch Wednesday night, only could get on by walking about the boat launch docks/piers.  I caught a ton of dink blue gil and a couple of small perch between 430-640 on a small sweedish pimple tipped with spikes.  I am guessing with even a bit of a seiche and the snow this weekend it's going to be a mess for a bit.

Anyone know if the shore ice is locked up (near the ramps/launches on the south end)? The last I saw was a picture after the wind the other day, and it was no bueno. Thinking of taking my father out this afternoon if it is.

And sorry if this should be in the Conditions page; I just saw that there was chatter of Small Boat on the main page that was more recent than the other one.

Anyone go today? Have not been since they put docks in. Looks like guys fish right next to them. Are they floating docks?

2/11 - Ice away from the shore was beautiful 8" of clear, hard ice where we were.  The shore ice got really messed up with the wind and there are slabs of it toss around which make getting onto the ice a bit of a challenge.  one of the piers by the boat launch appears to be off it's moorings.

The bite went away, fished for about 2 hours from 430-630 and we pulled one smelt up and had a few other light bites - no Gills for us today.

Ice was a solid 8-9” where I tried. Had to search more today but ended up with about 20 sunnies and gills. The wind was wrong today. When we get a good south west wind the bite will pick right back up

When the wind is in the East the fish bite the least.  How true it is.  Heard this pharse about 55+ years ago from my grandfather and again from my father.

Went for a few hours only couple keeper perch 8 1/2 inch. Ice was 8" 7 clear. Shore ice on ramp side is water 5 inches deep or thin ice that barely holds you with ice under it. Not a problem getting on, but huts get soaked.

Bite was slow today. Fished from 2-530.  Managed a few legal Crappies and about 10 keeper sunfish.

A couple of guys had holes punched and were trying off the docks at the boat ramp. They said there was around an inch of ice. The whole harbor is locked up so I’d guess some people will be trying it in the next week or so

Down in the area friday and it and EBM were open water. More ice in Buffalo River from jams than in the harbors. Heading to the S.T. this w.e.

It had to make a couple inches last night. Has anyone been down to take a look? If not I’ll take a ride later and report what I see.
