Got a report Friday of a bad slush pocket behind the Island, so fyi.  I drove around north basin, everything rock hard.  Just a skiff of snow, so snowmobiles, wheelers, small 4x4 vehicles should be fine.  Stay away from usual trouble spots, inlet, Rogers Brook by the boat launch.

They have been getting caught all winter long, up to 6lbs.  Winner for salmon for the derby was 4.56lbs, then 4.35lbs, and yes, I hung on for a third place finish at 2.75lbs.  It was one of the summer stockies.  We're in the money!!!  ;) ;) ;)

Thanks guys, kind of a memorable fish. First light this morning, flag goes off, icicle 7' under ice, takes out 20' of line drops it.  Re bait, 15 minutes later flag goes off again, this time it's screaming.  Set the hook, fight the fish, kind of like bringing in an old boot til he gets near the hole, makes several runs, finally get his head up the hole and hook comes out! Had to "go in" and scoop him out!  That was it for the day.  Really slow, but that's ok. Had time to cook the boys a nice breakfast, enjoyable Derby.

Congrats on the Salmon!  We didn't fair as well but was still fun.  Saw a few flags but nothing hung on.  Kids had fun, definitely be back next year.

Certainly was a fun Derby. We took biggest pickerel too, so our "team" did really well.

Great job Tony

Plan on going up to the boat launch on the north end Thursday. I’m wondering if there are any trouble areas to stay away from outside of the Rogers brook?

In that area, just the brook.  North end off Fowler will start getting shaky soon from the inlet.  That's about it for the north basin.

Hey Everyone,

Hope this post is ok, if not let me know I'll pull it down.  Just looking for some feedback since the last trip to schroon wasn't that successful.  We fished the south end in front of Blue Sky Estates (15-40ft) all tip-ups. We fished with suckers and shiners (hooked behind the dorsal fin) and dropped them down about 5ft off the bottom (verified by my Helix 7).  Any issues with the technique or did we just have an unlucky weekend?  Is this part of the lake less active than the north this time of year?

Thanks in advance

That area is known to take some big pike, but for Lake Trout and Salmon further up the shoreline would be better.  Years ago baby suckers would catch most Lake Trout, fished a foot off bottom, but in the last number of years Hunts and Icicles fished suspended has far outfished anything on bottom.  20 ft under the ice seems to be the magic number.  Years ago the old timers put buttons on their braided lines set at 20 ft and always fished that depth. All the Lake Trout we caught this weekend were caught 15-20 ft under the ice, in 40-50 fow.

Schroon like any other big lake takes time time to figure out.  One year we couldn't fish LG and I counted 166 lakers from the same GPS marks.  All on jigs.  Food for thought.  Ironically the local epo checked me April 1 that year and says "man you never over from those holes"  he had been watching via binoculars all season and came to say hi on April fools.  Good guy for sure.

Tony thanks for the update on the conditions.  I pretty much had the south end of the lake to myself on Saturday with the exception of a few groups who fished from like 9-1.  It took some work but I found some smaller lakers to play with.  I started out on a 40 foot flat but wasn't marking a thing.  The weather was pleasant so I ventured out with the flasher and found some fish in deeper water that would aggressively chase my bait.  The wind picked up so i made a whole camp move to where the fish were.  I landed 3, lost a nice one on the bottom of the hole and hooked several others.  I ended up packing up a little after 2 after a big gust of wind ripped 3 of 4 spikes out of the ice and almost took my shanty for a ride.  I think that is the most lakers that I've ever marked so I was more than pleased with how my day turned out.
