Title: Lake Arthur
Post by: jaeger80 on Dec 15, 2021, 06:53 AM
I just wanted to stop by and say hello to the good people on ice shanty as well as ice friends past and future.

They dropped the water levels early this year (unlike last year when they waited until we had ice to drop the water level).  It now appears to be at winter pool.  Water temp was at 36 degrees in the middle of Muddy Creek, so if we get some reasonable winter temperatures soon, we should start making ice.  Pray for safe ice and I hope to see you guys out there this year.

Mo, good to hear from you.  I don't have any pics but I'd say she's down about 18"-24".  Lots of shoreline showing and the concrete launch platforms are waaayyy out of the water now.  Good time to walk around and look for snagged lures...

They definitely did not used to drop it this low...must be under new management.  The same management that refuses to let guys fish from the docks.   :%$#!:

4x4dad, you find the fish and give me a call!

If this wind slows down we might see some good ice being made over the next week.

I'm actually holding onto some hope for safe ice by the looks of this week's night temperatures . Figure I'd take a ride to MC Friday or Saturday and check it out  .

Tell her to bring those boys out on the ice and we can decide how tough they are. I remember fishing with my girlfriends dad in high school. She dumped me because I fished to much... her dad and I continued to meet up and fish the lake after.

If this rain doesn't kill it and it freezes up tomorrow night, will that help make the ice thicker faster?  Just looking for a silver lining...

Looking at the current extended forecast, how likely is it we will have safe ice by next weekend?  I have been bed ridden with a flu the past few days and im getting stir crazy to get out in the ice
Title: Re: Lake Arthur
Post by: jaeger80 on Jan 10, 2022, 10:51 AM
I live about 8 minutes from muddy creek and have a small .25 acre pond at my house. I was able to stand on it today with no cracking or flexing.  I'm thinking that is a good sign but I'm sure there are more factors at play with the lake. Either way, this season might just happen after all...

Thanks for the update brother 👍
My hope is holding out until we get reports of 4-6 inches of safe ice . This old man is to old to go swimming for fishies . 🤣
But the forecast of freezing temperatures is definitely promising 🙂👍

Have the spud two days of above freezing weather plus rain on already thin ice typically isn’t a good combination but with the ice season anymore you never know. Better to play it safe than sorry especially for a panfish or two.  The good news is the temps supposed to be dropping after today and hopefully we don’t get too pounded with snow but get the miserable temperatures and windchill expected
Title: Re: Lake Arthur
Post by: Mknott on Jan 13, 2022, 06:19 PM
8-12 inches of snow expected Sunday night in Portersville. Hopefully it's windy Sunday night and some of the snow blows off the lake. Just when you think we're in the clear and a big snowstorm comes along

Was out today on MC. 3.5" of solid clear ice. Fished 7am-noon. Very very slow. Dad hooked a decent bass, but I was skunked for the first time in a lot of years. Very unusual for early ice. I could see 9 guys from where I was at and nobody had much action.

Not a ton to be honest, most were in that 6-8 inch range. Lots of 7.5's (which in my eyes is a solid keeper), a few just over 8.

Fished tonight and the fish were extremely negative, but still managed a decent pick of your average LA gill and kept 10 crappie for dinner throwing the rest back into the drink.

For what it’s worth and anyone interested I’ll have more than I need in waxworms hopefully arriving soon. If anyone is interested in some or a tub let me know and we can set something up.

I fished Muddy Creek today for 30 minutes (that is all the free time I had).  4" of clear ice. Fish were in a negative mood.  Could attract marks in with strong jigging, but no commitments to eat.  Was fishing small rattling spoons + plastics.

Just stopped by the church. Looks like about 4 inches of snow. Two groups out in front of the church not very far off shore and one shanty out by the maples. Looked like a big wet spot about 100 yards out from the church where the ice is pushed down.

Anybody been back the road to the 528 upper (canoe/kayak) launch? I am hoping some of it melted and not all got packed down.  If it’s the later it will be a nightmare with ice (always is)
Title: Re: Lake Arthur
Post by: jaeger80 on Jan 20, 2022, 10:50 AM
That may be, but the packed down snow actually fills in the 10 million gaping potholes on that road and actually makes it smoother!
Title: Re: Lake Arthur
Post by: dipNrip on Jan 20, 2022, 11:11 AM
Potholes are least of my concern.
Sliding off the tight side road park spots into a tree is little bigger damage, lol.
Seen people do it before and almost did the same last after the ice melted and refrozen after a warm day.

Somewhere out there is a fish that’s hungry. We just need to figure out where, at what depth, what time of the day or night and what it is hungry for... simple as that.

Just saw a western PA hard water tournament Saturday (1-22) Last year after it, fishing went from hot to non existent in Muddy and Shannon.
Which they’d limit it to under 50 people or spread it out so it doesn’t ruin an area.
Oh well guess I know where not to go on Saturday.
Title: Re: Lake Arthur
Post by: Icefishingjames on Jan 20, 2022, 04:42 PM
Upper 528 had some soggy spots with 3-4inches of slush/water on top the first 30 feet of the launch ramp. Soggy spots were 4 inches of mostly clear ice under the slush and snow covered areas further out were 4.5-5 inches of Mostly black/clear . I did find a spot 15 or so yards out from the ramp that was only 3inches so be careful.  The road going back to upper 528 was prettt rough and down near the ramp is bad If you dont have 4x4 with good tires you could get stuck down there. A few trucks started to drive down and decided to reverse all the way back to the main road.

The ice was 5 inches at Goddard state park right before the snow arrived...hoping to go there this weekend again..this way,,we can stay clear of the tournament. The lake however,..talked like I've never heard..extremely noisy...I'll be curious as to how much snow is on the lake now.

I saw a few guys out there last Friday. They were smart. They parked at the upper 528 launch and walked out to that area your talking about. Im pretty sure your talking about the launching area at the end of Barkley rd where the old bridge stones are. It's very dangerous to access the lake there. Beavers are all through there and the ice where they swim in the channel is always super thin. I went through there years ago. Lake had 7" everywhere, but I found a spot that was 1" thick over 4 foot of water about 20 feet of shore. It's been like that year after year.

Lake had 7" everywhere, but I found a spot that was 1" thick over 4 foot of water about 20 feet of shore. It's been like that year after year.

Fish hunter is 100% correct.  I'm not saying it's not possible, but it is dangerous.

Fished today on the 422 side of Nealy Point to avoid the masses in the tournament. About 4 inches of clear ice with 3.5 inches of white ice. Lots of lookers but only a small handful of takers, all small perch aside from one bluegill. Nobody else out on that section of lake. If you are going to go out that way, tread lightly and have a spud bar. Ice directly off the point looked totally clear as if it wasn't frozen during the snow storm.

Fished LA yesterday evening and this morning.  The evening bite was tough and had to work the fish for a nibble but brought some topside that all went back.  This morning had a hot and heavy 40 minute bite window before the snow hit and then it stopped just as quick as it started.

The ice should be thick enough for the deep water...but with all the snow we have been getting,..it will be tough pulling ,..but a little easier with a smitty sled...I'm thinking deep water ,..better oxygen..hopefully better action.

We have only had ice for a short time there's still plenty of O2 and fish shallow 15 FOW or less.  I've struggled more so far this season in deeper water than shallow that is for sure and on a verity of lakes.

26 degrees is warm? You must be from the upper Midwest, lol!
No, I get it with sun melting the top layer of snow and refreshing along with all the other junk from previous storms and compaction.
Zion is pretty decent usually as it pretty flat as long you don’t go down that side launch road.

I fished over there Saturday morning. The ice at the access point was not good, but I walked along the trail and dropped over the bank. Ice was good enough to fish on that side. A bit of a hike to get back up from there but it's possible with a sled. I only went about 50ish feet away from shore. 4 inches of clear ice with 3 inches or so of white ice. Far from ideal but fishable. That being said, I do not recommend anyone unfamiliar with the lake or ice fishing in general try going out in that area at this time.

Thanks so much boys. I appreciate the main lake and other spot updates! Seems so wild to me when Shannon has what 8" and others areas are 3"-5". As a guy that has very little time but still wants to go out with my little ones, I hate to spend valuable time bouncing all over. Kids will only keep attention, dry, and warm for so long.

Main lake gets the most wind so it has more difficulty freezing than the bays.  I was there yesterday and still encountered slush on the ice and wet areas.  The eastern side of Neeleys had variable ice thicknesses the closer you got to the wet areas.

You can also get bait at Reddi bait in Bridgewater. They have BIG healthy shiners, fatheads, wax worms, maggots…. You can get on 68 right there and take it till you get to 79 at Zelie, or take 19 the rest of the way to Arthur. I know the bait shops are at the mercy of their suppliers for size of their bait, but I will say that I paid almost $4 less per dozen for these big shiners than I paid for the big ones last year at a bait shop much closer to Arthur. Just sayin…

Today is Wednesday then it is back into the low 20's Thursdays into Friday then into the teens for Saturday.  Then back up and back down in a few days.  We'll have ice for a little while.  We are at that time of the year where it is shot lived and you'll have to pay attention to it.  If it is not right for you that is okay too.

I fished last night until 8Pm.  There were areas with enough water on top that the jet sled floated as I walked.  When I left the shore lines were still good.  We got and are getting a pile of rain now that we did not have then.  The cracks were starting to open up a bit.  Last night there was still plenty of good ice.  The shore lines are gong to get tricky.
Title: Re: Lake Arthur
Post by: Snapper on Feb 18, 2022, 08:05 AM
I posted this in the conditions page.  In case you do not check both here you go if you do save yourself some time and skip this post.

I fished last night until 7PM.  The ice was different from last night.  Large volumes of water on top looking for any place to go.  The shore ice was different from the time I got on until the time I pulled off.  The lake is/was rising and the shore ice is pulling away.  As I came up to boat ramp there was a LARGE volume of water running into the lake.  It rained harder for a greater period of time after I left than while I was there.  The local creeks are RAGING over the banks.

I fished the main lake, 20-25 FOW.  There was 6" off good clear ice when I left.  I had a buddy out there most of the day he cover a good area running and gunning drilling holes searching.  The ice was the same all over.  There were some cracks that were separating for sure.  There were some areas with air buddle in the ice that the water melted through and was just starting to make those areas look like swiss cheese.  There were holes in the ice in area as large as a steering wheel on your truck.  There were a few holes larger than that.  When I left it was so foggy you could only see a few feet so I split.  Again there was a solid 6" of clear ice but you had to watch.  This was on the main body of the lake I did not check bays/coves.

It is snowing now and we got this cold snap.  Areas are going to skim over and turn gray, have snow mixed in and be difficult to see.  Lake still has to be coming up.  Shore line, water levels, holes opening etc. changed pretty decent amount from the time I was there to the time I left.

If anyone finds a small container with #5 ripping raps possibly a few spro Jr's they are this guys....  Hook a brother up.

Fished today in one of the bays.  Where I was there was still 10" of ice.  Most places I checked, the shore ice is way too weak to walk on.  At least 6 ft of weak ice to cross from what I saw.  If you fish tomorrow you will def need a plank...  Good luck!

It certainly is windy. Stopped to check the edges in a few spots. Dead end parking lot on Muddy Creek is almost a no-go. Maybe 6 or 7 feet of water and slush until the ice. 528 boat launch is ok, few feet of slush. Just keep an eye so you don't find yourself stuck. Church road was accessible. 5ish feet of slop, but someone had a board set up. Not sure if they are planning on leaving for everyone. McDaniels was also accessible. Few feet of slush. If you have knee boot or waders you can get right on. Didn't fish myself but there were a handful of people in each area. Be careful when you are out. Weather doesn't look good, especially Tuesday.

I went out on Monday from Mcdanel's boat launch.  The shore was not passable but you could walk out off the dock onto thick ice.  You likely need planks now.

The ice was 8 inches thick where I was.

I wonder if these cold nights will shore up the edges?  Probably not enough
