See you guy on ice and good luck for this season.
-
Love lake Diefenbaker. I cant wait to get out there. Patiently waiting for those first ice reports. :)
-
I am ready any time. I am anxious to see you old ice fishing friends on ice and like to make more new one.
-
has anybody heard about the ice thickness?
-
Was thinking a bout giving Dief a try this season. Where are some of the communal fishing spots where a guy can go and cut his teeth on. I'll be travelling from Saskatoon. From what I heard there is Coteau Bay, the trout farm, and the spillway are good areas to try. What is a good starting depth when looking for perch and walleye on Dief?
-
In the winter I've found walleye in the 25 FOW range. Perch can be anywhere between 15-35 FOW, but not exclusively. If you can find large flat areas of around 20 FOW, I've found perch to like those areas. The lake is so big, I would invest in a flasher so you can explore. Be mobile and move until you find them.
-
Anyone been out yet? Looking to go towards Beaver Flat or Prairie Lake but not sure if there's enough ice yet.
-
There's shacks out on Sask Landing with 6" of ice
-
Can anyone tell me if Cotaeu Bay is froze over if so how thinks the ice? Thanks
-
Anybody fishing around Beaver Flat yet?
-
Coteau Bay iced up yet?
-
Only 2" of ice in WestBay at Beaver Flat
-
Buddy was by the east side of the lake today. Said it’s open.
-
Just heard that coteau is froze over
-
With only a few inches of ice on the lake in some spots I would definitely give it a lot more time. If Sask Watershed decides to let water out of the dam, that ice will be crazy unstable.
-
5 inches in Pumphouse bay (not at the back, half way in).
8+ inches at the back of Coteau (middle of the mouth of irrigation bay).
Landed one nice walleye, had a bunch of pike and perch on cam that wouldn't commit.
-
5" at Beaver Flat now. Walked on from the boat launch. Fishin was steady all day Sat
-
The pumphouse bay has 6 to 8 inch of ice tonight 20 yards from shore. The big lake is almost covered with ice plus half an inch of snow.

thanks for the update toonfisher. hoping for a deifenbaker trip sometime before christmas.
-
How far out from the pump house is that ice unsafe?
-
If I got there earlier to enjoy good sunlight, I would sled out 2oo yards.
-
Anyone been on at Beaver Flat recently? Hoping to get out during the holidays.
-
Any ice thickness reports from coteau after the weekend warm spell?
-
Not heard about Coteau Bay, but the big lake near Gardiner dam has been reclaimed by open water.
-
Has anybody been near the trout farm this year?
Can you get close to the shore by truck off their road?

No you can't, its fenced off
-
Figured that was the case. Thanks for saving me the drive.
-
Any updates from Beaver Flat?
-
Coteau is good to go still, 8+ inches of ice. Slow bite but caught a few pike, walleye and perch.
-
does anyone knows fish farm area ice covered or still open? thanks !
-
i cant speak for the fish farm but i suppose it would be still open water. I did venture around a few bays closer to the dam ....most were only half froze ...if that. Warmer further south by fish farm i suspect hope this helps. You could always call Twyla at the fish farm and ask
-
thank you so much!
-

It's froze over now, but it'll be a few days before anyone can get on
-
thanks for updates
-
The big lake is cover by ice again at Gardiner dam. Coteau Bay has 7 inch to 10 inch of ice.
-
Any ice reports for the riverhurst area??
-
Any ice reports for the riverhurst area??
It was 2.5" thick yesterday, gaining about 1/2" per day

Pike were biting good yesterday. 12 inches of ice, tons of walleye and rainbow on camera but no biters. It was weird, they were in deep and even caught one in 47 feet of water
-
Where were you that it was a foot thick already?
-
Good catch saskoutdoorsman!
I was by the edge of the big lake yesterday afternoon over 3 inch of ice. Wasn't cold, lots of lookers, only one walleye iced.
-
Any word yet around Beaver Flat?
-
Im going to be working around swift and hoping to get out the odd sunday maybe by sask landing somewhere. anybody have any areas they dont mind sharing as a starting point for pike, walleye, trout?? PM if u prefer.
thx for any help.
-
Was every bodies day as slow as mine yesterday or was I just in the wrong spot?
-
hello everyone, just registered here. I was on the lake on Saturday, Jan 5, tried Coteau bay and the beach area, got 8 lbs pike at coteau about 20 feet depth. seen fish at the beach but no bites had one pike poking my jig for 20 min and nothing
-
How's the ice around the Riverhurst area?

Good to see you found a pike as well.

Anyone been to Elbow lately? Wondering on ice condition?
-
Ice in the Harbour is about 12", but nobody is venturing out on the main lake. I was at the mouth of Sand(dogleg) Coulee last week and the ice was only about 6". Fishing has been slow. Good luck and take care.
-
The main lake near the Gardiner dam has good ice of at least 7 inch. Fishing is slow the whole morning.
-
Over 10 inch of ice at the east end of Gardiner Dam on Sunday. The photo was taken 15 minutes after sunset.

Anyone been out much here, only been out a couple times and havent had much luck. Whats working for everyone else?
-
Was out a little while ago for pike one afternoon. Was pretty slow, a few flags with a 45 incher was the biggest. Not crazy action though that's for sure
-
Anybody ever fish the old tressel by mistusinne or down by the quapplle dam in the winter?
-
I have fished it many times winter and summer. Can hit perch there sometimes in the winter, but lately it is mostly burbs.
-
And what's wrong with that? haha.

Slammed this gater today!! didn’t measure or weight it couple pics and let her go was cold in the wind didn’t have time to piss around
-
beauty she's been eating well!
-
Nice fish Slamhound!
How was the ice where you were fishing? Does it look like they let any water out?
-
Nothin wrong with burbs. Just sayin!
I'll take a fat 'burb any day of the week. Gotta love the bonus fish
-
Beauty pike slamhound! Kudos on the release too!!
-
The ice was good they have been letting lots out 8 feet probly sence first ice. The ice tundra is starting. I always think it’s neat how the ice forms along the shore line as it go’s down.
-
Is this a good point to access the lake diefenbaker (51.027474, -106.487435)? (on picture its the circled point) and then i want to go to the second point, do you know if I can drive there?
or is there a better access?
does anyone know if the roads to access are cleared?
thanks!!

The lake is not accessible at this location during the winter by automobile. The closest point of access might be at the boat launch at the Mistussinne Resort Village. I'm not sure if there are any heaves between Mistussinne and the areas you want to get to.
-
Thanks Burbot Master! Too bad we can't drive on the lake at the Douglas provincial park access ... we are from a lab at the U of R and that's where we launch our boat in the summer. Do you know if we'd still be able to drive close to the lake and walk on with sleds at the Douglas access? We could try driving from Mistussinne but as you say there might be ice heaves.
Is this where the boat launch is at Mistussinne? Has anyone fished near Mistussinne lately and know how deep the water is? We want to collect water samples from as deep a spot as possible so if there are deep spots near Mistussinne we might try there ... our point closer to Douglas was 28.5 m (94 feet.)
(https://i.postimg.cc/7fZ3CC2c/Mistussine-possible-boat-launch.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/7fZ3CC2c)
-
The last time I was at Douglas you could still drive to the launch. It is the access from the launch that makes it hard to get on the lake with a vehicle.
There are numerous sandbars out from Mistussinne, but if you search around you should be able to find a deep spot. Your location of the Mistussinne launch is correct.

Thinking about taking a trip out there from Calgary next year. Any places to avoid? Would like to get out on a Snowmobile and explore the lake a bit.

This lake is sketchy at the best of times, lots of gas pockets making thin ice, I would suggest having someone with you that knows the lake well, even then it can be scary, here's an example of what's on the lake
-
DAMN!.....Well that would definitely cause a new level of puckering up. A couple years ago, walking back to Danielson from the flats, I hit one of those damn things and only went down to my waist. I was fortunate to throw myself forward before I went in any deeper. Bad on my part on not watching the ice closer and keeping my head up.
Thin ice and open water have no forgiveness!
-
Anyone know the ice thickness at Elbow in the harbor?
-
+20 inches past the mouth
-
Has anyone tried down in the spill way at all? Or does anyone ever have any luck there? I have tried a couple times a few years back, and always catch “something” thats usually really bug and snaps my line lol. But have never brought a fish up down there.
-
i fish it on and off....its hit and miss...always a few whites in that area
-
Does anyone know the results from the fishing derby at the Elbow Marina on the weekend?
-
~10 fish caught, 15 lbs burbot won it
-
~10 fish caught, 15 lbs burbot won it
And the young man walked away with $780
-
15 lbs burbot? thats massive
-
Has anyone had any success catching anything around Coteau Bay? Thanks.
-
Finally made it out to Diefenbaker to look for walleye today. It was very slow all afternoon, and it was good that the ice was nearly eight inches less than at Blackstrap, because we put down a lot of holes. The fish on camera included a few pike and a huge burbot that spit the hook halfway up. A perch swam up to one of our baits and established itself as the biggest ever seen by the observer.
The evening saw a walleye invasion at the 11 foot depth. All were in the 2 lb category. Static baits were of no interest to them. Only aggressive jigging with pink spoons seemed to work. In the end three were caught, one was lost at the hole, and a number of others did their best to interrupt our mooseburger dinner.
Had to love the weather!
-
great day on Diefenbaker Saturday with fellow shanty members saskbucks and twistedhook and 2 buddies set up in a not so populated part of the lake. the fishing was off and on all day but the rods were bending and the flags a tripping.with a mix of pike walleye, burbot, and whites making the trip topside. and many more non committing as seen on a couple cameras. thanks to the boys for a great on ice fish fry and deer sausage very tasty. we all had had a great time. hopefully a couple more trips in the next 2 weeks. oh yeah congrats to bert for another huge pike good job.
-
It was indeed a good trip Rip. Its hard to beat a day without big wind. Hard to beat fresh fry and fantastic friends. Oh yah, thanks again for clearing the line and keeping me from getting hog tied. See you soon.
-
Anybody fish around the area the Swift Current Creek enters the lake? I've usually fished east of Beaver Flat but planning a trip and thinking about venturing west.
-
I fished that area last Sunday. Targeting pike and didnt get a flag or bite in about 5 hours. Brutal. Had 6 tipups out. It looked like a decent area for this time of year.
-
yet another great day on the lake yesterday we were all back out for round 2. started out earlier than last week as we thought we had maybe missed the early walleye bite by about an hour or so. saskbucks and a friend were already drilling when i arrived. started seeing marks and shortly after a friend was into a walleye. and then i was hooked up on a huge whitey biggest i ever caught. more marks were coming and going throughout the next couple hours. with no more fish making the trip up at prime time. the rest of the crew showed up. fellow member twistedhook and a couple more friends and we all fished the area pretty heavily the rest of the day marking catching and seeing on camera. walleye, pike, whitefish and of course burbot were caught again. another highlight was a friend hooking into a big I'm guessing 15lb pike that bit off his jig the bottom of the hole after an epic fight with many runs on 6lb mono with no leader at least we got to see him. nice work Gerard. fun day for sure. and thanks to Dave for the lunch on the ice. hopefully we can still get in a couple more trips. 1 walleye, 1 whitefish, and 2 burbots for me.

Any updates on ice conditions? Lookin at maybe taking my kids out for one last fish this weekend.
-
Muddy around shore line at the top of the ice. Still thick walking out is no problem around riverhurst area, I drove out a little ways last night, probly will drive out abit again this morning.
-
the fishing was slow on Friday for saskbucks and myself as we ventured to a different area of the lake. we did manage 1 walleye, 1 whitefish 1 small pike, and a jumbo perch for our efforts. lots of whiteys on camera and some walleyes. tons of tiny perch filling the screen on most holes. great day and great weather and of course another fish fry. thanks saskbucks. heading back out today on a solo trip somewhere possibly last trip to deif depending on the outcome.
-
Still trucks on ice on Saturday. Ice is being eroded already. Two of us fished Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, and iced 6 whitefishes, 1 each of walleye and perch. Missed a bit more half way, and those tug like whitefish.

Hi! I'm wondering if someone could tell me the approximate date when most of the ice has melted on diefenbaker.
I'm from the University of Regina and writing my thesis on winter conditions in lakes around SK, so that's why I'm hoping to catch the approx. ice-off date, which would be when 2/3 of the lake has melted or the first day when its completely melted to go with a boat. I'm grateful for any reply and update as soon as the ice melts! Thanks!
