Title: Super Duper Mille Lacs BS Thread!
Post by: Skipper on Jan 10, 2013, 05:30 PM
With all the Mille Lacs posts (where to stay, where to fish, how to catch walleye), I thought we should have a general catch all thread. If you have any Mille Lacs related BS, comments, or whatever, post it here. We should end up with something that members can go back through and get a lot more answers than from a bunch of fragmented threads.

I will merge any new Mille Lacs stuff into this thread if it isn't getting any hits.

Don't be afraid to wake it up if it gets old!

So, where are you guys fishing? Lets see some pictures. @)

It's like 40 degrees and pouring right now. Not good...

I think this will just take the snow cover off. They are predicting below zero again by Saturday again.

Radar says this burst is pretty much over... I need some snow now or I will melt my snowmobile slides.

I guess it just depends on how much comes as rain before the snow starts and how much snow there is once it turns cold. I'm not real worried, there's allot of ice out there right now. There is over a foot way out on the flats now.

Shoot, Lake X has over 15.... it takes allot to wreck that!

Anybody around Mille Lacs know if this rain did much to the ice? I'm heading up tonight and was wondering if I'm going to run into a sloppy mess or if it didn't do too much up there. Thanks in advance

Never mind, called Hunters a while ago. They're keeping people off to maintain the access 'til it re-freezes

A friend of mine was on today... he said it was wet and slippery as snot but the ice was good. I'm sure you can get on at a public with an ATV if you wish to.

Was gonna head up there with the wheelhouse. Didn't figure I wanted to tear up the shoreline with the 1 ton and shack. Think I'll just stick close to home and head up next weekend...

Ask this question in the Minnesota section. You will get some responses.

My tip is to go to a resort like Appledorns. Ask for Paul. He will treat you right.

I merged a bunch of the new Mille Lacs threads together... Hopefully you guys can get some answers.

Best bet is to ask around right before you head out. Chances are at least a few of us will have some useful info. I will second everything that is being said so far. The mudflats in the north or the abundant gravel and rock structures in the south all hold fish.

I caught this walleye on mille lacs a little farther out than eddys fish houses. The hook flew off in the hole so i got my glove  on and liped the fish. Its not a moster but it is the first big walleye i ever caught. im going back on friday to see if i can catch another one.

NICE! Now you're hooked on that lake! It will call to you while you sleep! ;D Get that thing on for your avatar photo, lets let the rest of them see how us MN boys roll! @)

From the sounds of it, we have another arctic freight train on it's way. The weather man says it should show up late Saturday or early Sunday. By Monday it's supposed to be -20!!!!! Fri and Sat should be the best bet this week.

With no snow cover, we should enter the safe for loaded semi truck rated ice by mid next week. ;D Let's hope we don't get a mess of heaves... :-\

Hey guys/gals!
How has the bite been lately?  We head up on Friday, leaving Sunday, and are staying on the ice through KJs.  Just trying to see how things are going up there!  I think we are going to site in the house at night and morning for walleyes and cruise for perch from other ice houses (that we're bringing) during the day.  Any pointers would be appreciated as it is our first big ice fishing trip.  Us Iowegians would love to get on the fish while we're up there!

Thanks!

I just googled KJ's...

It looks like he is on Rocky Reef or at least in that general area. Lots of really great rock and gravel in that part of the lake to fish. Unfortunately, he is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOONG way from the mudflats. You can always hop on 169 and go out of the Indian Reservation or up to the South Garrison ramp to get easy access to the mud. If the bite is worthless on the gravel, that would be the first place I'd go.

Consider buying a GPS and a chip... Only crafty old launch captains can find some of those flats out in the middle.

Avoid crowds

KJ's has a 10x48 shack with a full bar, 15 holes, and will sleep 12..... :o :o :o :o WOW!

I've only met him at the ice show a couple times, seemed like he was a nice enough guy.

Hey!

Thanks for the information!  Since it's our first trip we are a little in the dark about the lake.  We looked at several different locations to stay with, KJ's just fit the bill for us!  And yes, their big shack w/ the bar looks pretty darn neat!

I'm hoping we end up having some luck and if not, we'll be out drilling holes and seeing what we can find.  I think we have 11 of us going, hopefully there will be more than one gas auger (which is mine!), so I can get some fishing done instead of drilling all day!

I'm just concerned that I might need an extension for it!  I should probably measure how long the shaft is to see if it's even going to work!
Title: Re: Super Duper Mille Lacs BS Thread!
Post by: Skipper on Jan 23, 2013, 04:41 PM
I made it through no prob last weekend... but it has been sub zero since. If I had to guess, I'd say you'd still get through with a standard shaft on a Jiffy or Strikemaster. I really can't promise. If you have a spud bar, you can always use that to finish the hole. I really think you'll be fine though. Ive never needed an extension before mid February before. Reed's Sports on the corner of 169 and 27 on the south-west side of the lake should have an extension (or spud bar) in a pinch. They will be VERY close to where you are staying.

Well, we made the trip up and made the trip back on the icy roads.  I think the front that pushed through on Friday caused us some terribly tough fishing.  Of the two sleeper shacks we had, there were 4 walleye and 2 perch caught.  We were using a variety of live bait and lures and just had very little luck.

The people we went through weren't too bad, the bathroom stuff didn't get cleaned out until it was about too late.  I feel bad for the poor guy who had to take care of that mess!

We ended up with two keeper walleye, kept the two perch and had two overs.  One measured 19" and then we had a 25.5" hit the rattle reel at about 2 AM Sunday morning.

Overall it was a good trip.  We never made it out with our own ice houses but that was because we didn't know the lake and the people at the bait shops weren't incredibly helpful, which was a bit of a let down.

I think we'll go again next year, just not sure who we will go through.  Thanks for all the info guys!

We got to drive on those crappy roads back to Iowa as well, makes it a little longer of a drive.  We ended up fishing on a sand bar around 2 mile and ended up with 6 eyes - 17 1/4,17 1/2, 18,  20, 22, and a 24"  No perch though, I was seeing them on my camera but weren't interested in anything I tried.  All in all our trip was good too just wished the fishing would of been a little better.  It was a good time though.

Glad to hear you guys had some luck as well.  How deep of water were you in?  We were sitting about 1.5 miles from shore, 23-25 ft of water.  I was glad we ended up w/ the 16 1/2 and a 16 3/4 so we could take some walleye home.  The lake has a large slot!

We never saw a whole lot on the camera besides my cell phone, a rod holder that my brother lost (still not sure how), and a pepsi bottle that fell in the middle of the night!

Ouch, sucks you lost your cell to the lake!  We were in 30' of water and went through Nittis Hunters Point.  I was really happy with them and would use them again.  Back here in Iowa the temps are 57 degrees this morning with rain.  It's supposed to get cold for a couple days but not sure I'll risk trying to go out this weekend.

We were about a 1/2 mile out I believe, just a little south of the Hunters Point Resort.  Yes the house was equipped with rattle reels just tied small hooks on them with a split shot and set them about 6" off the bottom.  I think we caught 2 of the 6 total Walleye on the rattle wheels.

A friend sent me this link today... looks like the Band and the State are cutting their quota in half! :o

People who thought the slots were tight before, wait till spring! I've never really looked at the lake as a grocery pit anyway, I fully support it. If a few guys who feel the need to fill coolers stay away, I'm cool with that too. If the "average angler" can't figure out how to release the fish fish caught out on the flats when the water is warm, you can watch for an August closure too. Bone heads don't care if the fish dies after release, this is a big part of it I'm sure.

Post by: pipeboy98 on Jan 31, 2013, 05:25 PM
My wife has friends  from work that have a house out of agate bay and when they found out we ice fished  they invited us up there for the weekend.  Now I'm not intereseted in secret lures or honey holes...just basic lure requirements and strategies.  I'm a pike and gill guy...usually don't fiddle with walleye, but I figured I'd take a stab since they're willing to put us up for he weekend and fish out of the 10x18 shack.  I'm thinking rattle reels at night with minnows...but what kind do they like.  A little guidance would be helpful.  Pm me if you want it to remain private.  Pics of jigs might be helpful...and I also heard there is a slot limit...going to have a little research to do before next weekend.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Skipper, when your out in a sleeper what minnows do walleye like to eat on rattle reels?
Title: Re: Super Duper Mille Lacs BS Thread!
Post by: Skipper on Jan 31, 2013, 07:17 PM
I have not fished in a sleeper out there in at least 10 years... seriously.. I am a portable guy to begin with and Mille Lacs is so close, I just go home and go to bed there.

For "dead sticking" or hanging stuff below a rattle reel, use fatheads. Some times a medium shiner is good too... If you come up 169, stop at Prince Bait just north of Milaca. No one else in this area can keep decent shiners to save their life. I would go half and half with shiners and fatheads on your rattle reels. Maybe even toss in a sucker or two if you have enough holes and people to make it legal.

Thanks for the help!   Can you catch them all day or is it primarily a dusk, dawn situation... Jigging during the day and rattle reels at night?
Title: Re: Super Duper Mille Lacs BS Thread!
Post by: Skipper on Jan 31, 2013, 09:13 PM
Middle of the day and middle of the night are usually the least productive. They do bite all day though... You can catch a fat eelpout at night, so set them rattle reels while you sleep! The ice is getting crazy thick, the light levels are always low under there this time of year.

You can jig 24-7... set the rattle reels when you get sick of it.
Title: Re: Super Duper Mille Lacs BS Thread!
Post by: pipeboy98 on Jan 31, 2013, 09:24 PM
Is there a color jig that seems to be working well?   Are they close to the bottom?  I don't have a flasher yet, but I do have a camera, but I suppose it will be too deep to see.  Is it the standard set up with the rattle reels set a foot off the bottom?  Again sorry for all the questions...I wouldn't ordinarily fish like this, but I guess Sometimes when an opportunity comes...you got to try it!
Title: Re: Super Duper Mille Lacs BS Thread!
Post by: Skipper on Jan 31, 2013, 09:34 PM
This kind of stuff is why this thread exists.. Anyone else can skim over it later. Someone needs to ask before someone else can skim... ;)

Yeah, I'd set up 10-14 inches off the bottom. Hot pink has always been my color out there.... every really big fish I've ever caught out there was caught on pink... White, chartreuse, and orange can be good too. Hot pink is starting to become a superstition for me though, I usually start there.

Walleyes on that lake are usually glued to the bottom... pinned down. They fire up like a rocket ship to grab a meal though. Sometimes I jig real low, sometimes I jig like three feet up.

The camera may be helpful. Mille Lacs is quite clear.

Does any one fish crappie & gills on Wahkon Bay?We were out there in Dec. with minimal luck, The walleyes were a blast. Any feed back would be great.

Mille Lacs stinks for crappies and gills.... It pretty much always has. Sometimes you can get them in the spring in Isle bay, but expect a ridiculous crowd. I never understood that myself....

Well the weather pattern is going to straighten out...the eye bite should be on.....Tony roach has a great fishing report on his sight.......sounds like there's some major cracks that have opened up so beware...Not to mention 10 inches of snow on top.....people are saying to bring an extension if you have one.....

Looks like I will have to buy one up there cause we do not need one ever down here.  I hope I find one.

Now sounds like were leaving after work Wed.....This will be an experience for me....

Just want one pic of me holding a huge eye........

All I've been doing is working and plowing snow. I haven't ventured onto the super slab yet. Hopefully when Christmas, snow, and my stupid job are calmed down, I can get some reports up.

Sounds like I will making my first ice fishing trip to Mille Lacs.  We will be staying at Macs Twin Bay around the 9th of January.  Any tips or hints on the fishing I that area?  Thanks in advance.

Work your way a little north from where you will be at past sunset bay and work the sand area. Mille lacs as everyone knows is broken up into 3 parts,  the Mud flatts, sand area, and where you will be at the rock and gravel area. If your looking for eyes work the sand with either a slender spoon tipped with minnow head, or a rattling jig. Drill hole after hole after hole looking for ridges. Pros will even tell the same thing, drill drill drill. Good luck

TC86 gave some good advice. Never fish Mille Lacs without a GPS and a portable fish house. Staying stationary or just drilling blind is a recipe for failure.

Fished Mille from 6am till 8pm last friday. Covered a lot of ground, marked some fish, and caught 0. I was disappointed but the weather was great and it was my first time on that lake. So it will get better. Back to the drawing board and going to try and come up with a new game plan then go back up for a couple days in about 2 weeks.

You couldn't pay me to fish this lake. Fish over 12 hours and catch nothing. I can go on lakes in northern MN and catch my limit in 6 hours or less. If I was anybody planning on fishing here it would be better to wait till the stewards of the land net it out and then ask the white taxpayer to restock it again.

Haha your 100% right on that one. I thought I heard someone saying a few weeks ago that there not reaching there quota on netting. The new generation of fire dancers aren't keeping up with there Heritage, nor do they care anymore which is a good thing for the taxpayer. Means more fish if they can't net there quota.

So Are they dragging any shacks out on the lake yet!?  Or is the snow causing problems!?

There's a bunch of house in just about all the bays right now, some smaller shacks maybe a mile out, and portables a littler further out right now. I'm going to call tomorrow morning to a couple resorts and find out how much further there getting out there. I'm really eager to get back up there and farther out for some walleye fishing. I was stuck in the bay fishing 3 weeks ago on the west side. Caught a few walleyes and some perch, no keepers though.

Gave it a good try on Myr Mar last weekend had a wheelhouse, so only moved once. Tried 33' and 20' 7 eyes - 2 keepers a few perch that were decent and 1 tullibee. Bight best at dusk and dawn.

A couple weeks ago went out of Nitti's (good folks by the way) had similar results in 30'

Others that have been spending time on the lake will know better, however I will say the mud flats will probably be your best bet. Try to get on an edge and keep drilling.

A resort like Castaways in Isle will make getting to the flats a quick ride, also their restaurant is pretty decent.

Good luck on your trip!

Just got back from our weekend trip to Mille Lacs. Fishing was pretty slow the whole weekend. We caught a few jumbo perch, and a 20 1\2 and 21" walleye. Of course they were just over the slot. We went out of Red Door Resort. They had nice 10 hole sleeper shacks, and their cabins were very nice. Multiple reports from people that were up there earlier, said we just missed the hot bite by one day. Green demons and small spoons worked the best.

Almost forgot. We had the DNR swing by our shack. My cousin bought a dual license with his wife at Gander, butsince she bought it before they were married, it apparently didn't count. The DNR guy was a complete asshole, and ticketed him. We argued he thought he was legal, and it was Gander's fault they told him to get the dual license. DNR guy didn't care, and threatened to take all his fishing gear. No wonder some of these guys get a bad rep. He even said he was just getting a warning, and to go buy a new license, but later in the conversation said he would be getting a fine in the mail. We told him that you just said he wasn't getting ticketed, and he stated he never said that. Wish I would have gotten the guys name and somehow called in a complaint.
