Title: Irish Hills
Post by: SKIFFLAKEJIMMY on Dec 11, 2018, 09:54 AM
It looks like all the lakes around here are locked in. Clark only took 2 spud whacks to get through. Vineyard and Wamplers have about 2" of hard clear ice. If anyone is heading to Wamplers any time soon, you will probably need to go out from the beach for a while. They are doing some work near the boat launch. There is an earth mover stuck in the channel where it goes into the lake. A huge wrecker was attempting to get it out.

I checked the ice here yesterday and the spud went through in 2 whacks. That being said, 2 guys are out there fishing right now. Braver than me for sure.

Thanks for the update.

Just curious, is your lake still locked up? Or did any open water form up?

As long as the Irish Hills lakes stay locked up, we should be thickening after this Friday.

Hopefully we'll have 4+" by the first weekend in January.

It seems all the lakes stayed locked up. I went by Clark and Columbia and they are locked up. I kind of thought I might see guys on the Columbia channels, but there was not. I think things are looking up soon. If we get wind like last year, it shouldn't hurt anything.

It would be great if they would just make a call on it now as many are coming from out of town and need to make arraignments for accommodations and such. It certainly looks as if the 27th isn’t going to happen.

Yep...and it looks like little to no precipitation. Almost all lakes starting over, but this will help. Below is the 10-day from WeatherUnderground for Brooklyn. Cold front comes through on Tuesday night; if it's accurate, looks to stay almost entirely below freezing for about a week.

Would be great if we got some lows in the single-digits and highs in the teens; that would really speed things up.

Where once was open water earlier this past week, I'm now seeing skim ice on some larger lakes.

With the current 10-day forecast, if it holds, we should be walking on the hardwater in the 'Hills by the 25th (maybe even by the 18th). ;D

I will check some lakes tomorrow. It looks like the rain turned all the snow to wet slush, and has refrozen. But I haven't checked it personally. I saw people fishing yesterday in the rain. Yucky day to fish!.... P.S. I just let the dog out to go potty. The ice is groaning. Good sign.

Clark Lake. The gate to the township park is closed and locked. Some open water by the boat ramp. Vineyard 1 1/2 inches of black ice with 3 inches of frozen slush on top. Wamplers. 5 inches of soft ice. I broke through getting on. There were 2 guys fishing in front of the state park. The Midwest Open is postponed until 2021. Iron Lake, near Wamplers. 3 inche of soft ice. It was cracking beneath me. Little old Skiff Lake. 2 inches. YUCK. >:(
p.s. Tom Knutson said Devils is as bad as Wamplers, if not worse.

Many lakes from Clare north and northeast are being fished. 10-12" of snow is tough to hall thru but waiting for ice here will drive ya nuts.

2" on Skiff Lake.

2" in Branch co. with another inch of half frozen snow on top. I've seen half a dozen guys on this ice standing in puddles. When I was young and dumb, I would be there with them. My son helped pull a guy from the lake this week. the guy walked off the end of the pier without even a spud. went right through up to his neck. This is why you don't follow others without checking for yourself. Stay safe!

I just checked some lakes near me. Vineyard has 2.5" and someone has been fishing. The ice was cracking for me. Wamplers, Sand, and Iron. had 2''. No evidence of fishing. Round across the road from Wamplers had 1". Clark and Allen still have patches of open water. I didn't check thickness on Vandercook or Michigan Center lake but nobody has been on them. Maybe a week yet if we are lucky.

I know not many peoples get there, but Lake Columbia, does anyone know what the ice is like say around Castlewood bay, I haven't gotten out yet and wanted to take the wife in the am. but my brother just shot me a video of open water on Grass lake. thanks for any input.

I have been fishing on Columbia.  Ice is good about 5 inches.

If you are not a property owner with a valid  sticker on your windshield there is a VERY GOOD possibility your vehicle will get TOWED.  If you park without a valid sticker you are TREASPASSING and will be ticketed as well.

Lake Columbia is a private lake and security is patrolling

Yes,  I am a property owner we looked at all the lakes in the area and then settled on Columbia because it was private.

Well, it looks like it is over for this year. I was having a pretty good season until the Brutal cold, and the snow dumped here. How did the rest of you all do? Have a great soft water season.

Season too short for me. Did okay on gills and perch. Smelt not so good only was able to fish for them 3 times. Had work and other obligations. Last year seemed like I was fishing more. Need to just retire. I guess it is time to switch gears.  :'(. Tell next year.
