Jumbo perch?
« on: Feb 17, 2007, 11:57 AM »
What do you guys consider a jumbo perch?  Reason I ask is, on another site a guy is claiming he caught an 18 inch perch?  Do they get this big?  He is also claiming he saw a guy land a 36 inch chain pickeral....?  Any thoughts

Perch can get that big, but he may have had a rubber tape measure. I consider 10 -12 inch perch "JUMBOS." Once you get over 12" they're "SUMOS." :o :o :o :o

I have been hunting or fishing almost everyday of my life. The rest have been wasted.

There is another thread of this on ice shanty chit chat. Yellow perch dont usally get much more than 16 1\4 ins long . Manitoba record is 16ins ,Master angler is 13 . If this guy caught one he should have a picture with correct measurement.

Want a picture on that one. Have caught ONE 15 1/4" and a couple of 14" in my life, but consider anything over 10" on my smallish type waters a jumbo.

I'm not an avid perch angler, but I do a fair amount of jigging while watching my tipups.  I've only caught a few over 12".  they are jumbos in anyone's book.  if anyone tells you a foot-long perch isn't jumbo, they are blowing smoke.  that's what I gather here in northern NY anyway.

Depends on the lake and the school you are catching them from. Private lake here in NJ with my buddy, he had 20 and I had 18. Two of mine were just shy of a pound. The other 16 went up the scale to a 16.5 at 1.93 lbs.
They are out there. The hard part is we no longer have access to that perch bonanza.

How about some pics of those 16.5" perch?
I have seen pics of one on here.(taxidermist1)
The other is my buddies, he has it mounted. I might be able to get some pics of it.
16.5 and only 1.93 lbs. is kind of skinny.

You know ignorance is bliss. The state record for NJ is 4lb 4 oz.; so when I caught a 2lb 9 oz perch 6 years back I thought nothing of it other than NICE fish. Figured got almost a whole lb to go to beat the record. I just checked the NJ DFG&W page and now the state record is 2 lb 6 oz and the four pound one is considered a historical record. When the H3LL is they change it???? I felt so much better knowing that I ate a nice fish and not one that could have been the current state record. Now I’m regretting that I did not get it mounted.  >:(
