Weeds and sand are main . Perch will pretty much take off if it is muddy but not as well. I was also told by our local bioglist that their eggs have a natural toxic an that keep carp and suckers from eating eggs . Thats why they can over populate trout lakes.

Do they need moving water?

Most lakes that I fish are not moving water . Not very often will you catch perch in fast moving water. They are in river systems but usally a slow current, or back eddys.

They usually need some type of weeds or underwater structure to
hold their eggs off the bottom. If you see a ribbon like string of eggs
attached to weeds or limbs you likely are looking at perch eggs.
