multi use sonar

looking for the best fish finder for both winter ice and open water kayak.
A bad day of ice fishing is better than any day at work!

I have the Garmin Striker 4dv.   Works great on the ice and getting it setup to use on my float tube.

Do you have a price range in mind?  You can literally go from $200 to $2,500
Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange,
Maybe off on some high cold mountain chain.

A few questions to help you get a good reponse from anglers:

-What's your budget?
-What are you style of finder are you looking for? (i.e. panoptix? flasher style? graph style? Screen size?)
-What are you currently running in terms of electronics (if any).

Personally I use a humminbird helix year round, ice ducer in winter then open water one in summer.

Loads of options but it will come down to what you wanna spend on it and how good you are with newer electronics and their interface software.

I sold my lx 6 last year for $500 so thats about what I have to spend. I really have been into ice fishing for over 40 years but now also have a Kayak. I bought a cheap fish finder(lowerance) but it constantly shows hundreds of fish and I know thats not true. I want something decent but do I need 2 seperate transducers?

If you have a $500 bank role there are lots of options out there , go to a store if possible and get familiar with different units
 And check factory outlets stores

Garmin SV73 with the GT 54 Transducer will run you $449 at bass pro on sale. You'll want the GT10 transducer for ice fishing. The 73 has side view and will support panoptix if you want to add that at some point.

It's a bit more than you want to spend but it's a great machine.

This would be my recommendation. I have a Echomap Plus 93sv that I use on my kayak and on the ice with livescope. If you don't want to go with a larger unit I also have a Striker 4 that is great for the money that I use for hole hopping and a second unit for kids and friends. The Echomap + panoptix (either original or livescope) will change your ice fishing for the better if you want to spend the money.
