Ever heard of one of these going up in flames???  Just curious whether the heat from the lantern would set the wood on fire???

I suppose proper venting of the lantern compartment is essential!!!
I have never seen one go up in flames even when the lantern malfunctioned. I am sure someone has done it though. Most have a skin of aluminum to keep them safe.

Very interesting pics. I have never seen or heard of a lantern box until I read this post. I may end up making one on one of these cold winter nites. It would sure be a conversation piece around here.

I fished last weekend and there were twenty or more guys fishing a couple channels. Every one of them had a home made lantern box. It was so cool to see all of the different ideas being pulled past me as I was fishing from my own.

Michianafisherman,
Was wondering if you would post a couple of measurements for me.  I have seen a couple of these boxes used and would like to make one myself.  Thanks.

Well would like the dimensions if the red one and then the second one you talked about (looks like the biggest one you have).  Thanks I really appreciate the info.

I will try to measure them up this weekend. I have to work and plan on doing some fishing so I have to make time to jot down the measurements. Just too make sure, pick from left to right.

Did you ever get a chance to measure any of them out?  Id be really interested in making one.  Also if you could weigh it that would be great.

Thank you,

I still use the first lantern box occasionally that I made up 50+ years ago.

It was a real easy build. I just used a 28 cent 16 oz glass bottle Pepsi case. It held 24 bottles and was taller than the bottles. Turned on end it was just the right height to sit on and hold my Coleman lantern. `A piece of 1/4 inch plywood and hinges scrounged at the lumber yard made the door with a screen door spring to hold it shut finished the box. A piece of rope as a carry strap finished it.

I sometimes wonder what that Pepsi box would be worth to a collector if I had not messed with it. Back then a case of empty pop bottles was worth a dollar 3 cents per bottle (72 cents) plus 28 cents for the case. So that is where the 28 cent cost comes from.

I was introduced to ice-fishing, back in the day, with one. Built a couple different ones, also, but actually, i don't miss having to carry one, any distance, when you have snow , like we have now. I'll take the 5 gal bucket.
