Bite leaders
« on: Dec 20, 2012, 11:44 AM »
I know this is probably a question that gets asked a lot, but is braided line a reliable leader for pike? the braid i have that i would use is 50lb spiderwire stealth. Thanks in advance.

For pike use wire. Something like trout fluorocarbon.

Steel and floro have better abrasion resistance and braid is so thin it will cut you to the bone if you have a big fish on and it decides to take off.

Ok, i will probly look into some of that tie-able leader wire when i make my quick strikes...providing i ever get to a pike spot..haha....been using 30lb mono for my q/s rigs when fishing for pickerel and the seemed to hold up, but i definitely want something more reliable if i get a shot at some pike..

I use a three foot power-pro braided leader for pike. 65 lb to be exact. I keep it short enough so that i can still hold onto the swivel or main-line when close to the hole. The 65 lb braid is strong enough to avoid bite-offs but still thin enough to avoid being seen under the ice.

Any superline in any pound test is the worst possible choice for a leader dedicated to pike. In order of reliability: steel, titanium, fluorocarbon, hard mono.

i have had good success using 40# floro with fish up to 15 lbs.. but i am sure if the fish has it the wrong way in its mouth one of these days we are going to loose a fish.. i have yet to have one break off. I also usually have a few steel leader out too.

I use 20 pound fluorocarbon because I prefer to catch smaller pike.
