Perch for pike?
« on: Feb 24, 2019, 01:14 PM »
I fish watchusett a lot in the spring and fall and I always use live perch as bait for Lakers there and they always do pretty well. I know they are a legal baitfish and I catch a lot of dinky perch on the jigging rods so I am planning to toss some on my tip ups. Has anyone here tried that before if not I'm trying it anyway in the next few days

Never tried it on purpose but I read another post here that said a guy caught a big pickerel using a small perch by accident.

I’ve caught multiple medium/large pike on a dead perch with its stomach cut open. They work.

I've used live perch- I cut the spines off the dorsal fin and usually cut half the tail off to make them easier to catch/eat.

Why buy bait if you can catch and use the native forage legally?

I use dink perch and small sunfish as bait during the summer with great success.
Although I've not tried it thru the ice I've heard and seen it done by many anglers with favorable results.

Great pike bait, caught my pb last year on one I jigged up near my tip ups.  Jig bite died and 10 minutes later a pike hit my perch.
I still prefer big dead goldens

do it all the time. I dont ever bring bait to one pond I like to fish. I jig up little sunfish and put them on tilts as I get them.

YUP, granted I have not caught a pike on perch but I have on pondies. I missed a medium sized pickerel last weekend on a 4 inch perch. I have caught bass on perch too, but regular shiners work better for me hands down. I started using perch as cut bait, eyeballs and guts are get to tip my jigging poles with, dont want to spend money on bait, rather catch my own.....
