Targeting Browns- advice
« on: Feb 15, 2019, 12:45 PM »
Here is to hoping the rain does not make the ice conditions rough!

I was able to finagle a hall pass for tomorrow and looking to target browns.  Any guidance as to structure, water depth, etc?  We will be setting tip ups and jigging as well.  About the only times I have caught them it has been in about 20’ FOW and a few feet under the ice on a tip up- that is about the extent of my knowledge about them.

Any tips, tricks, guidance, or good karma are appreciated!

Good luck this weekend and thank you in advance.

Depends on where you are going. Browns can be tough to dial in on.

I typically setup in 2-6 feet of water with medium shiners - that would be my starting point

try fishing shallow early in the morning , i do well catching brown trout thru the ice on tilts i like to target shallow rocky points that lead to steep drop offs or sand and gravel beach areas fish shallow in the am 2 to 5 ft of water below the ice with small shiner and as day progresses go deeper , i dont do alot of jigging have nerve damage in both hands

For browns I would stick to small shiners.

Main lake shoreline structure like points and cuts. Set up at different depths and try to pinpoint where they are cruising, they act differently in certain places. I like 8 ft down in 20 or more fow off a point close to deepest hole in the lake. Small medium shiners
if your not fishing, your not living

Fish right on the bottom, deep water near drop offs. Small to med shiners.
Suit up and show up!
