coiling leader
« on: Dec 02, 2009, 04:39 PM »
I would like to use fluro carbon leaders this year but I hate when it coils on the spool. is there any way to prevent this?

What works for me is a section of old fire department hose. Cut off about a 4 inch section of 2 inch hose, rugged canvas on the outside and a rubber lining. Squeeze the the hose with your index finger and thumb as you run the leader through it, the leader uncoils pretty easy. If you don't know any firefighters just stop by your local dept, they usually have old sections kickin around.....hope this helps.

hook the hook on the top of the tilt and tighten the spool when you store them. That way at least 1 ft is not coiled.

OR... just use wire

just grab a peice of rubber roofing or any rubber for that matter and pinch it on the line and pull it through .the friction will straighten your leaders right out !!been doing it for years on the fly rod leaders ..works great !!

I use floro too, with skillz like me, the fish don't care about a little coil

Steel is for nancys that can't finesse a fish.

I do the same thing for fly fishing leaders. Instead of rubbing the line through a piece of rubber, I simply strum it like a guitar string. When you pull it through the rubber, you are creating friction that can weaken light floro. Pull it tight and strum it relatively vigorously (depending on lb test).
Also, instead of wrapping your leader around the spool of your tipups, wrap a rubber band around one of the stick like parts. Then just put your hook into the rubber band, and your leader will stay straight.

Hook your hook on your sled and just pull the total leader section for 15 to 20 seconds. Done deal ;) Try it at home.   Doug

I am going to try flouro this year too. I was wondering the same thing. Thanks for answering my questions before I even have to ask them Paq... You guys play nice. We are gonna get 4" of snow tomorrow, so I think it's on its way.

A good hand stretch before you put the bait on will always do the trick with flouro.

I use the Terminator Titanium leareds. But this year I'm gonna try Flouro. If it doesn't work for me I will go back to the Titanium.

The coiling sucks but a 15# pike doesn't care.  At least that's what I've heard.  I've had good luck w/ fluoro and steel.

my flouro is about 3 feet long to start the season i have a small finnishing nail banged in to the top of my traps i wrap the floro around the spoll then around the nail and abck around the spool hooking the hook along any one of the pieces of metal on the trap . i start out with such a long leader and cut it down past the fraying every week, so by the end of season it is only probably 12 inches. as long as the line is not frayed you will not have any trouble with pike. i live right near a great pike fishery. c u on d ice.
