I use wooden matchsticks with some hitch knot. I don't know what the name of it would be.

Use the same thing, will spool right off if you need to adjust hook up, no hang ups when fish runs. Learned this from YoAdrian years ago.

Small barrel swivels work well and go thru the guides on polar tackle, also if left in the spool they wont hang up on your line like buttons

I change depths from trip to trip and can go from 40 feet to 80 feet. I don't want to slide a button through 40 feet of line on a 10 below zero day !  :)

Rubber bands with a truckers hitch.  Broken ones work too.  My sets vary from just off bottom (80-100' sometimes) to just below the ice.  These are easy to put just where you want it, easy to see, and when you are in a hurry to get off the ice you can leave them in with no issues.

You're not sliding the button. You just hold onto the button and the line slips through it. When the line is straight it holds the button in place. Doesn't take any extra effort and the button doesn't move unless I move it.

.. exactly... and I don't want to be tying hitches and fumbling with match sticks when I cant feel my fingers.. the buttons I have are tiny 3 /16 in diameter.. I drilled the holes t make them large enough to accommodate the line..

Mine are like 3/8" or so. Just some old buttons the Mrs had in the sewing box at the time.

Yup, that's a larkshead. Technically, it's a hitch rather than a knot. I just use a small button. Works great!

Not to mention you could slide a button with gloves on, can't tie knots with gloves... at least, not well

I also use buttons and found the key is to find one large enough where it does not spin your line when moving it up or down yet small enough not to catch the line spooling off. However, as i type this i realize why not just cut the edges off the button so there is less surface area. Might give this a shot next season.
Just add water.

It's always wise to pay attention to Roccus! You're right on the larger holes, but you can always drill or open them up with a hot awl or such if you can't find smaller buttons with larger holes.

What if you were fishing 80 feet and next time out you are at 40 feet -do you slide the button then ?  ???

Just ordered some of these buttons. Will drill two holes. These will not scare the fish away.

That's it right there. Im really digging the button idea. Just leave em on the line and I'll never have to worry about forgetting my match sticks! I only use them because there's always a plethora of used ones in my bobhouse from lighting the stove.

Not me, My buttons are just a bit larger than the ring guide on the reel so I just wind them up and the button just slides up the line. But if they weren't larger I'm sure I could just hold onto the button with my hand and reel in the line. The buttons I us are just pretty much your regular shirt buttons. The holes are the right size and the diameter seems just right also.

Yup. it's really not that hard and it won't accidentally come undone like a matchstick. You'd have to slide a rubber band or bobber stop also but the button is way easier IMO

Use 2 buttons. keep one at 80 feet and the other at 40. problem solved.
Just add water.

A bread tie works great. You can twist them on and remove them at the end of the day. Best part is they are free, kind of, from the bread you bought to eat!
