GPS' on the ice
« on: Mar 12, 2006, 08:45 PM »
Was wondering how many guys out there are using GPS units on the ice? Thinking of buying one, what does everyone recommend? Are they really that useful?

Very useful piece of equipment.  I used a Garmin 76 marine(It is a non-mapping type but does show position of selected cities and marine markers)  for several years for fishing, hunting tracing back a path, etc..  This year for my birthday I received a Garmin gpsmap60cs.  WOW!  I can't wait to get the extra charts available for it. Use on land, water, and if your into paragliding and that sort of thing it can plot your descent.  It has an electronic compass that kicks in when you are not moving and a barometer.

If I could, for strictly fishing I would pick up the gpsmap/fishfinder by Magellan for fishing. One of the fella's on IS has one.  My search function is acting funny and I can't find who..sorry.

Check out the Lowrance M68C S/Map Sonar\GPS unit.  Just bought one for my new boat and they have an ice fishing kit for it.  Have not used it on the ice yet as I just got it but has flasher and standard sonar screen and color.

  Yo everyone,

Thanks for the inputs :)  E-trex sounds like a good one! Where can it be found and how much?
Always nice to here from a bunch of professionals ::)

Some Walmarts carry the Etrex any Basspro shop or Cabela's should have one and I would assume Gander Mountain has them as well.

check out http://reviews.search.com/search?q=etrex&tag=srch

From there after reading reviews (or not) the site should show you several e-business' that sell the unit and their price.  Shopping around will give you an idea of the price range to purchase where you want.

You could also try yahoo or amazon etc.

Have fun!

I live and die by my GPS on the ice.  I rely on my GPS to put me on the majority of my ice fishing spots. I use a Garmin E-Trex Venture, and have for a few years now.  I am very rough on my equipment, and it hasn't broke yet, and always puts me EXACTLY on my spot, so it gets my vote.

I think the sport track map is a very easy and accurate unit. The etrex has a lot of different styles and versions now a days so you can always get one you like and they are simple to use.
