Dont think i will be coming back to iceshanty next year,this site has become a joke all anybody wants to do here is fight and name call and make threats. we have already lot a bunch o true angling professers Slipbob,Camofish,Rgfixit,Robb,Bigredonice, just to name a few ,seems like this has become a home for whiners and B I T C H E R S instead of true sportsman. how many times this year have i seen threads that the topic is actually illeagle to do here in NY but we got a few knuckleheads bragging about doing whatever it was? come on people WAKE UP your not only hurting just yourself your hurting the future of the sport.

No reason to give up your over 4 years of dedication to this site. I agree it's not easy to ignore some of the wrong doings I've noticed, but you have to let it go. There are far too many good people on this site to have it ruined by a select few. Hope you reconsider.

What organization, with over 12,000 members, does not have a variety of personalities, and communication types?
You wanting everyone to act and sound the same, purges the system of diversity. Diversity can be, and is good for healthy dialogue and debate. How fun, or productive would it be if everyone agreed with one another?
Some of the best knowledge and ideas I have learned from this site, have arisen from the diversified angles of thought present on this site. If you do not appreciate, or cannot tolerate hearing others opinions, approaches, even though you do not agree with them, then leaving may be best for you.
I hope you reconsider. I am new this year, but adore this site, and become passionate about my stances, and like to share my opinions as others do, but would in no way want to drive you from this site.
Hang in there, too much to miss by not being here. :)

I wouldn't give up yet. Yes there are some knuckleheads on here but you can ignore them. Look for the good posts and enjoy the pictures thread. Plus you could always lurk. >:D

Don't let other peoples opinions and childish name calling discourage you from this site. The grass is never greener on the other side. This happens all over the place. You get this much testosterone in one area and you are going to have these problems.

Well said RL, Im new this year also and found it to be very informative. The complaing and whinning is normal with 12,000 peps. Its normal with 12 people.....lol Just grin and bear it. Its worth ignorning the negatives to get all the possitive feedback. Im a perfect example. I post a pic of a pike i was proud of and got pounded for it. But here I am. stupid maybe or just like the site and all the info that can be picked up from here!

I agree with the other guys, don't give up. There are lots of guys like myself who monitor the site but don't have much to offer in the line of advice. I don't get out very often to fish, so I don't have much to add. I do enjoy the back and forth though and the wisdom of many of the contributors.

You ever use a CB radio??? :P it's just like that on channel 19 >:( I have to say you are correct and this is why I don't even turn on the two way in the 18 wheeler any more ::) Friggin ringyangs on there and here as well talkin crap all the time but ya gotta know that you are always above them and YOU can turn it off any time ;D or enjoy the volley of stupid people behind the mike or in this case the qwerty. Keep in mind while you fish there will always be stupid people talkin' crap somewhere, BUT THEY AIN"T FISHIN' :thumbsup: :cookoo: :clap:

to anyone thinking about leaving iceshanty.com. in every post there is a report to moderator bar. DO NOT be afraid to use it. that will bring it to our attention so we can weed out the losers and keep this site as it was meant to be. we can not be every where at once so once and a while a post or two slip by us. that is why the membership is our eyes and ears to let us know about inappropriate posts.

I think all of the problems would be solved if there was a nominal yearly membership fee in order to gain access to the reports/conditions section, perhaps $50.00. This would eliminate the lurkers getting free info without contributing, and would eliminate the useless banter and insults. The membership fees could be used to throw an end-of-season blowout or fishing contest on a big body of water like Sodus, or some other awesome event.
Just my thoughts . . .

I'm talkin about the New York forum . . . most of us are located in the Upstate area, perhaps have it near the center of the state, e.g., Oneida. I think it would be a heck of a lot of fun.

a wise man once told me "everyone has something to say, just filter out the b.s. and take what you can learn." there are some threads that get a little chatty, but guys mostly are trying to learn, Ive been guilty of it, i try to stick to topic but sometimes i fail to do so. is that a reason for some one to get crucified, no but i think that leaving the site would be a mistake, then they win. all the whiners will take over and it will be like a microcosm of America today. the good people lay down and just get fed up with all the bad in the world, they just stop trying. fill up your buddy list with people u like, people who are reliable sources and p.m. them. thanks for your time and don't give up the good fight. p.s. vote early- vote Conservative. :tipup:

It just seems like everyday there is new drama...........this is a fishing site lets talk fishing and what we can do to ensure my kids and yours have a place like this to learn and perhaps even teach a few of us a thing or 2. there is ton of water here in NY if you get crowded in your favorite spot move to another i mean it seems more stressful to me to argue and scream and holler than it would be to just move on, not everyone here was brought up to show respect for themselves or others i know this and i try to teach respect even though 9 out of 10 times it blows up in my face but there is always 1 who puts a smile on my face. i will try to let it roll off my back fellas but sometimes i just want to turn it off.

Drama is for sissies! I try to avoid threads that are based on preaching opinion or rant. In life I have learned that it is pointless to try to change an opinion of an ignoramus or one of limited intelligence. Why even try? Don't dump a great site because of some doof. It would be like quitting driving because others don't know how to drive. Why not quit icefishing because of 4 wheeler hooligans? Stick around, some of us enjoy intelligent exchange.

As long as the membership police themselves to help out the Moderators we can maintain control of this, "THE BEST ICEFISHING SITE ON THE WEB". I understand your concerns but look at the friends you have made and fishing partners collected. I myself am from Indiana, but I enjoy the pictures and I'm not afraid to leave a good job post. I don't know if you can charge for memberships as this entire site is owned by Scott, plus you would deny the newby a chance to learn anything, I know I wouldn't pay for anything I'm not familier with but want to learn. Just my $.02. sorry if I offended anyone.

Keep the faith I would hate to see another long time member leave. Yes, there are threads that can be annoying but with so many different threads to look through skip the BS ones and focus on the good ones.

The fee idea and the reasoning behind it sound interesting. I do, however, feel that the $50 mentioned is excessive. There may be compromise solutions that could even serve purposes beyond discouraging those undesirable characters from participating in this program. For instance, a mandatory $15 dollar annual purchase from the pro shop would dissuade the lurkers while at the same time contribute to the maintenance of this forum---which has to be considerable both in man hours and dollars spent.

Let me tell you about "rusty". I own a forum myself. Rusty came on with the regular questions, then one day turned into a real sourpuss with alot of snyde remarks. I PM'd him to let him know he's been banned. I ban by both username and ip address.
About two months later, I contacted him. I saw something inside of him that stood out: His original posts. I asked him for a apology, and he replied with one. My moderators were furious.They could not believe that I would consider bringing him back.
He turned out to be one of my best forum members and took a keen interest in crayfish collection and photography. His pictures are used in a crayfish identification site, and i'm proud of him and myself for what transpired.
Bottom line : Report the bad posts.
If I was you, I would ask Scott for moderator position. I would use my four years as a referance and not throw it away.

If I have said it once I have said it at least a hundred times, it ceases to amaze me that people will complain when a lot more can be accomplished like fishing or hunting. It's also a intereting thing that as sportsman we would rather complain and stir the pot with each other instead of banding together to fight bad legislation or to further our sports. If we truely banded together a lot more could be accomplished. Our foes the anti's have figured this out and are well organized.
I don't post that much anymore, not like I once did, for a couple reasons but one reason is surely because of the bickering and complaining.
The good will still be good the people creating strife will most likely tend to continue to lean in that direction.

Frist off, let me just say that I love this site. There is a ton of info on here, so much so that a person would have to spend their entire time surfing this site instead of fishing. I have found that this site makes me want to be on the ice more. I fish 10 times as much now than I did before I found this site. I fish different bodies of water, and for species of fish than I ever would have without this site. I have learned a lot from this site, have met some really great people, and made some good friends.
However, there seems to be a mass exodus of long time shanty members. Members that are very knowlagable, informative and willing to share their knowledge with the masses. This site is full of members that have a lot to say, but none of it being helpfull. If you weed through those members you can find the good ones. The guys that will tell you how the fishing really was, what the condition of the ice really is, and actually own a tape measure and know how to read it. ;D
These are the people that I would like to see stay on this site, but too many are leaving for one reason or another. Don't let the morons push you out! just imagine what you'll be missing

Buckshot Jon you hit it on the head lets fish and hunt and above all help each other. I have gotten 10 non ice fisherman to sign the petition against Grannis alone. Every outdoors person I know will sign that petition Even if they don't hunt or fish, we should rally together and stand side by side against people who would take our rights and liberties away rather than fight against each other. Lets put our differences aside and use the energy somewhere else. Tight lines everybody.

you shouldn't let the few short fish spoil you're trip, b/c next time you will get the big one. same thing goes here, just b/c some dink got you going doesn't me we still cant have some fun. i agree some ribbing is necessary, but when enough is enough somebody should be notified of this. don't throw away 4 years of fun for what a handful on idiots may have said or done. hope you stick with it and we see you on here next year.

WOW :o This thread has been the has been the most intelligent gathering of passive aggressive ice fishermen I have seen yet! Notice how we don't mis-spell and use perfect sentence phrasing. I knew we were out here for the betterment of sport fishing! Stay on top of the ice and the evolution of modern man, the Neanderthals are still around, they just need more refinement.

He basically openly left this site as well as MFF and explained his reasons.
Why not put it back up for everbody to read and make their own decisions. Just because he stated his opinion and it didn't necessarily jive with the mods, it got yanked :callcops:. No response to Oaks concerns, no explaination to fellow members as to his concerns,...just sweep it under the rug. If that isn't cowardice then i don't know what is. There was nothing derogatory or any profanities in it yet it has disappeared...erased from cybersapce. I don't understand.
I challenge the mods to put it back up and stop being a bunch of skirts....

also the last i checked this was an ice fishing site not an english class. who cares if sentances aren't correct or the spelling is wrong, as long as the fishing tips are on and the atmosphere is good WHO CARES. just my 2cents.

I'll keep it short. Great comments by all on this topic. Been ice fishin' for years, but my rookie year using this site. I have definately picked up some new fishing tips & conditions reports from this site. And glad to see so many fellow NYers on here. Anyway, Hardwater don't give up the faith!!! Guys like you make this site worthwhile. Perch out.

I have seen this happen with all fishing and hunting internet forums. I use to post to two flyfishing forums until they degradated into a venue for insults and hurt feelings. The forums all start out great , friendly and with lots of good information , but after a year or two they get hijacked by folks who have no manners and all the good posters seem to leave.If this keeps up all these forums will have no relevance and just fade away.

10 years and were still here. :thumbsup: Were doing our best to keep this one different then those others you are talking about. Believe me its no easy task.

bussman, i would agree , but i would also , as a suggestion, pray that you pay attention to some of the new members a little bit more, many of them are the reason the senior members are degrading down to being grumpy and unhappy with things.

i totally agree as ive had a few threads hijacked and these posts had important info that turned into a circus act so that deters me from posting as much as i once did

well...ive been following this thread and i think its a super positive sign that you guys (mods) are activly involved and constructive in this thread. my hats off to you for that. im glad it hasnt turned into an instant "zap" i really do hope though that some of these problems expressed on here are noted however.

Its much more then noted. We are actively dealing with new issues every day. It might surprise some members to know there are sites created each year just to cause problems for this site. It been going on for years now and I am sure it will not end any time soon. ::) The thing thats funny is the members of these so called anti-iceshanty.com sites still can't stay away. ;) As time has proved, those sites are always short lived since they have no real purpose once their members are rejected from this site. Some are banned and some realize that the general membership will not bother with them anymore. Please remember forums don't come with directions and we know we make mistakes. As long as we keep learning from our mistakes hopefully we will be around in 10 more years. ;D We do our best and thats all we can do.

Guess I'm not the only one that's noticed something different. Seems like a lot of different posts on the same subject, inane posts, and BS banter, back and forth, that doesn't contribute anything useful. Not going to leave the site, but I will be more selective in what I read. Will continue to post when I can say something useful. Am not interested in the number of posts I can log.

Actually, if would take the time to read some of those 812 posts, you would be surprised by the volumes of knowledge and information that is being shared , in a most gentlemanly way. This poster your referring to is quite an assett to this site. He rarely condems anyone, (except maybe in the MIRC Shanty that is designated for that) and is very helpful to those asking for help.
You Eerie Dear, are the sort of poster whom creates the BS that brings out people like myself, that say the things, others only think about, but are to polite to mention.

This site has some of the best diversity thinkable. But diversity should have it's limits, meaning you!
Folks here were having very healthy dialogue and debate until you entered the fray. Now you are reading what others were saying they are tired of. So please, if this site irritates you sooo much, find another less desirable site to frequent, so we do not have to be subject to your insults.

Im finally going to stick my nose in on this one after reading many of the posts. Here is the deal, people are entitled to an opinion. We allow that on this forum. There are going to be good and bad things on this site. Mods try to get rid of the bad stuff but can't always. We have to remember nobody makes you read any of these posts. It is your choice, and I dont know why someone elses bad post should make you change your action in your life. As mentioned before, we are better off coming together as sportsmen rather than bickering enemies. IF we continue to bicker.. were no better than the anti's. I really think we all need to go fishing

This stuff goes in cycles. Call it "cabin fever" or "beer bravado". The one immutable fact is; the anonymity of the keyboard gives a certain percentage of people a vehicle to be, well, stupid, without reproach. It's a small percentage and they come and go.
I don't post as much as I used to. I don't have the time in my life, as it is, to seek diversion here.
The moderator team is a pretty cohesive unit here. In general we follow the same philosophies. If it's within the well thought out guidelines, leave it alone. If not, dump it.
Take it for what it is and enjoy it. It's a web site for ice fishing.
