Title: Quick Strike Question
Post by: Zoo Angler on Jan 25, 2011, 03:21 AM
I posted this once already in another topic but no one is answering my question so I might as well just make it a topic - I have made a few Quick Strikes with 20 lbs flouro and #2 trebles. I don't use the shrink wrap on the one treble tho and just let it slide on the line where ever it needs to be... I have caught decent pike and have noticed I get more flags than most of the guys around me but I also get a lot of drag and drops or I set the hook but don't get the hook up. Here is my question - Does the shrink wrap allow the first (free floating hook) to get a better hook set bc of the added friction or does the problem lie with the size of hook I use and the pike can feel it? Or is it both? Thanks Guys

I'd imagine the shrink wrap would help with hook ups, and give it more friction to set the hook, but I don't use them much. I've also heard that they work best for dead bait.. but again, I dont know from personal experience.

go with a single treble, quickstrike rigs are overkill in my opinion and do too much damage to the fish, since i started usin a single treble i havent come unglued once

Well without modifying anything yet, I went out today and had a 60% hook up to bite ratio...not too bad but i still had 3 or 4 drag and drops

Also was wondering if anyone has used circle hooks on a quick strike or even a "natural" rig. I want to release most of my pike but alot of the time I end up having to keep them bc the trebles hooked them in the gill and they are bleeding too much to let them go.

I've used quick strikes with some success but was never very sold on them. What I have been doing this season has worked out very well. I use 60 lb fluoro and make a small loop at the end approx 2 inch loop. I crimp the loop with a small crimping sleeve and on that loop I have two octopus hooks Either 2/0 or 3/0. With the giant baits I sink both hooks into the bait and with the 6-8 inch bait I stick one hook through the back and let the other hook hang. I let the pike take the bait a bit longer than I did with trebles and I have an excellent hook up ratio, and the hooks always end up in the mouth and not down the gut.

I have had less drops this way also..my theory is that when a pike is running with the bait it always takes it back down into the weeds and I'm usually fishing in thick cabbage. With two trebles if any part of those trebles is exposed it gets hung up on the weeds causing the pike to drop the bait. With the two octopus hooks there is much less of a chance of a hook hanging up in the weeds. Just a theory but I think its pretty accurate.

For what its worth I like to use a a quick strike rig with two #4 trebles.  I use these with dead smelt and have had very good luck.

i like this trick when there is a little current take a spoon and take off the treble .... take 2 leaders and but the swivel ends into the split ring take 2 hooks of your choice and put on the snaps ... gouge into head and tail of bait ... if you make your own leaders or quick strikes you can clean em up a bit instead of the leaders

circle hooks are the bomb. they hook up right in the corner of the jaw. its all i use.
