Jiffy Pro Power auger question
« on: Oct 17, 2009, 06:38 AM »
I have a 2hp 8 inch and my questions is this...Is it normal for the gear box to slip?  After a few holes of it slipping it seems to "warm up" and drill a bit better.  Is there anything I can do like a different gear lube or anything?  Thanks.  Just wanting to tune my gear.  Maybe that will make the ice get here!

are you sure its the gearsbox slipping? some jiffy's do have a grease fitting on the bottom of the motor off to one side near where you connect the auger shaft (if it has one)

The clutch is probably slipping. The shoes probably got glazed over.

If they are glazed over can I fix it myself?

Yes, if you have some mechanical ability.
You will need to disassemble the cltch and give the clutch friction surfaces a light sanding with some 60-80 grit sandpaper to break the glaze and restore proper operation.

What would make it glaze over to begin with?

Slipping will cause it to glaze over and slipping can be caused by water/moisture or oil.grease on the clutch. It's possible there could be a leaking seal somewhere or some snow/frost/water got in somehow.

I have the the same auger, I think Jiffy has them slip for a reason.  Mine does the same thing, I would call Jiffy and ask them.  Post what you hear, I have wondered about this myself.

when you guys say they are slipping are you talking about it binding in a hole when your breaking through ?because they are supposed to..every jiffy i have ever seen binds at the bottom ..back off and restart..i beleive it is made to do this to protect you and the machine  ;)

I will call Jiffy today, I think they have a clutch that is suppose to slip so it doesn't damage the engine?  I'll post what I hear shortly.

I just spoke with Jiffy, there is a clutch that will slip if it is straining the engine too much.  He told me if the are new they have to be broke in, I have drilled about 50 holes with mine.  He said to remove the quick disconnect and set the head on a bucket, then with it running wire the throttle about 3/4 of the way and let it run for about 15 minutes, let it completely cool and do it again.  This will help the engine break in and will not harm it.

Mine is pretty new also and I thank you for talking w/Jiffy.  I am going to run it like you said on the bucket.  It makes sense the they do it on purpose.  Thanks a bunch for the info guys.  Tom
