Just curious, If your catching perch with whatever, jig / minnow / waxies  are you switching to perch eyes as soon as you catch them? I've only used them when I've run out of minnows. I've just used the hook and poped them out.
Sure it doesn't allways work that great- tears them- but seems to get the job down.

Normally I don't run out of minnows.  ;)

CD...generally I use a minnow just till I get the first couple on the ice and then switch to the eyes.  I use a teardrop jig, slide the hook down under the eye one one side, make a full circle with hook and the eye pops right out, plus I'm almost ready to punch the hook through and the eye is right there.  If I use the eyes a few minutes and the bite decreases, I switch back to minnows, but generally use the eyes.....

If you hook the cartilage around the eye it will stay on the hook for 20 or 30 fish
without changing it.
They are generally in an aggressive moad when they do this.

You are a bunch of wimps!!
Just press down hard at the base of the eye,and it pops out.

We are Wimps???? I think not. What do you do to fish slam your face in the water and come up with a fish in your mouth?
We like to do things the right way. There is a tool for popping perch eyes, and I want one.

Now That is the tool I am talking about. The guy I saw on the ice had one a little more advanced than that, but it is the real deal. Thanks,

I know , you might get a gooey finger out of it .
but if your on a run popping it out with your finger might save you
a little time thus more perch.

storme...just a couple things......

please explain to us wimps here how you do this finger deal in cold weather when you've got on gloves or mitts....

also, most experienced fishermen will have two or 3 eyes all ready to go in the event of a "run" as you so eloquently put it....and my way, the hook is already in contact with the eye, thus saving even more time, whereas your method has fingers near the eye and not hooks and last I checked it was hooks that got the fish, not fingers........did ya get my PM???

Someone said when they use this method that the eye will get smashed.

Someone said??  I take it you haven't tried it yourself but you talk smack about it??  Youth and inexperience at it's finest...

Gloves are for wimps???  Man, just keep sticking that inexperienced foot in that overexperienced mouth of your on here....

What size hook??  Probably a #6 or #8, whatever size hook is on a small teardrop jig.....

tough??  we are,,,we just aren't stupid....and after having been frostbit a time or two we learned our lessons.....

I would have thought a guy that had been filling buckets for 28 years would refrain on a fishing forum(especially being a new guy) from calling  a bunch of old salts here wimps.........

Unless you have an honorable discharge sitting on your wall from one of the Armed Forces...don't call Esox a jarhead.  Show some respect....just my honest opinion...

If you have the discharge, I apopogize for jumping on you.

I have a friend who is a dentist and she gave me a dental pick...works great. Just work it around the edges and then wrap the pick around the optic nerve...quick flick of the wrist and your done.....

I use a piece of 1/2" round nylon and tape the end of a large paper clip to it. Drill a hole in the opposite end and put a key ring on it. Then I clip it to a lanyard With my line clipper and hemostat. Everything is handy whenever you need it. I DO LIKE the wire one that Crappiedaddie made. Maybe he sells them.
