Pike - like you never understood them before.
« on: Jan 11, 2017, 05:55 PM »
Hi all,
I found this on line article about pike and their relation to other fish species.
It was interesting for me, so I though I would share it here. @)

Check it out at ----> http://www.outdoorcanada.ca/Northern-Pike---Like-Youve-Never-Understood-Them-Before

Be sure to check out part 2 as well. ;)

Looking for that BIG BITE!

Thanks for the link WW. Good read and I like Gord. Sometimes we take so much of what we believe for granted without ever challenging it. Heck, much of what folks believe is little more than someone else's opinion parroted as gospel because the source is well respected, a celebrity, good friend, whatever.

I, for one, will be looking to validate this hypothesis. I like out of the box, cutting edge thinking. There's nothing to lose by embracing it until you either prove it patently false or (surprisingly) add it to your own box of tools.
To fish or not to fish? That's a stupid question!

This is why my go to color for pursuing northerns and musky is green or pike patterns, especially when trolling. But before that article I've never heard about the theory that other fish avoid pike by smell.  I also don't think it matters what species of fish belly meat comes from, but since it's against the law to use fish parts as bait I'm not concerned.

I should've clarified in MN it's illegal to use whole or parts of gamefish of any species, including goldfish and carp.  I do most of my fishing in MN.

It just wouldn't be MN without a million stupid rules. :P

I always viewed a pike kind of like a cat. They lay around all day sunning them selves, and nobody cares much for them. Next thing you know an injured bird appears and they hop right on it.

That has got to be one of the coolest articles I've ever read. Im gonna give that a shot. Maybe get an edge at a couple of derbies. Would this be legal in NY state?

Have posted here a few times that I use strips of pike skin all the time for fishing burbot.  The combination of flutter and scent is deadly, and they have a tough time stealing the bait.

Often catch pike and lake trout while doing so.
