Shanty Heaters....Whats everybody use ?
« on: Feb 04, 2007, 01:41 PM »
I've looked over this site and there seems to be a consensus that the Mr Buddy portable is the prevailing heater. I've done some research on the net looking at quite a few different styles and makes.

The Mr Buddy series, the Mr Heater's lineup, Colemans Cat line, Century Tools line and Texsport's heater, even Stansport's butane heater, with prices ranging from $30 - $160.

The question....what do you use/would you use inside a shanty if it was...

>A hard side (permanent style)
>A flip-over style (Frabill/Clam)
>A tent style (like a Shappell..)

(I have an old Viking 300 tent style)

Thanks in advance for any help..!

In my flip over I use either the little Buddy heater or a Paulin sunflower type. In one of my hardsides I use a 19,000 btu Marsch pencil type heater and in the other hardside I use a 15,000 btu Empire direct vent.

I use a Mr. Buddy Heater in my tent style portable.  Keeps me warm all day...make sure to purchase appropriate attachment to run 5#, 10#, or 11# tank.

I used the Mr. Buddy heater. But on high it only lasts for 3 hours. Ran out of fuel in both tanks on the weekend. I just bought the E-Z propane filler at Cabelas. Now I'll be able to refill my bottles instead of having to buy new ones. I would probably only use it on low if the temps weren't 5 degrees. Works nicely though.

Over a lot of years I've accumulated a lot of crap. In my Shappell DX 3000 I have three heaters to use depending on how cold it gets. I have two sizes of the catalytic type Colemans and the small Buddy heater for hard cold. I have had that last one for two years now and still haven't even fired it up. It probably works real good because the other two can blast me out on some real cold days. Two people in one of those small pop up shelters trap a lot of heat. I am rarely wearing gloves inside with no hat and coat wide open.

I use a Paulin sunflower style heater in my Eskimo Quick Fish 3. 12,000 btu.

Pumps plenty of heat and lasts forever on the 20 lb tank it sits on.
