How much line on Tip up?
«

I know it depends on what depth you are fishing, but how much line do you usually have on your tip ups? I usually put about 25 yards on, but I usually only fish about 10-20 ft water and my starting depth is usually about 6-10 feet. I have yet to have a pike even come close to running me out of line, but I'm going to be fishing areas up to about 30-40 feet now.
What do you guys recommend?

I have about 150', 50' of smaller backing line (20-30lb), and 100' of 50 lb line, and am glad I do, I've had a few take half my spool before.
and is especially better if your in deeper water.

I ended up putting on 50 yards of 30# line. I usually see my flags right when they go off and am usually no further than 50 yards from them. So unless I get a runner...or a group of 5 kids running towards my flag (happened once already this year)....they don't get much time to spool out much.
Thanks for the advice.

I always FILL my spools. Trust me if your going to spend the time to fish, spend the money on gear, you will not be happy if you get spooled and it was your BP fish or a fish of a life time... For the extra few dollars it would take I HIGHLY recommend filling the spool!

All we use is the large spooled tip ups and yes they are filled to capacity. Seems like overkill until you get up to your tip up and its a blur and there a 25 # pike on the other end heading for the deep water. Had the smaller spools get spooled more than once and I hate having to rely on the knot to the spool to hold up. Heck I had an aggresive 12 pounder run out half a big spool the other weekend.

It's funny that I see this thread 2 days after a monster spooled one of my tipups. I never thought it was a big deal. I walked up to a tripped tipup to find my spool screaming line off. I didn't react quick enough. I got spooled in a matter of seconds and snapped off at the end. I assume it was a monster lake trout. It hit a line that was set up for perch. I learned my lesson the hard way. I'm still fuming over this mistake. This set of tipups will be getting stripped and jam packed with as much line as I can fit on them before they get wet again.

Getting spooles sucks especially considering just how rare it is for a really large fish to bite!
