I bought this 7" auger looking for a good hand auger that I could use to drill large holes while fishing for northerns without having to lug around a heavy power auger. The auger was very lightweight and easy to carry, especially since it came apart and fit nicely in a sled. That quickly became the only good thing about it though. As I got out onto the ice and started to drill my first hole, the auger refused to catch. Even with brand new, razor sharp blades, the auger refused to cut. With the two-hand design of the auger, one should be able to cut through 12" of ice in a matter of seconds, yet it took my over 20 minutes just to get through my first hole. The blades are set at a very high angle on the auger creating a very steep cone. As a result, when starting a hole, only the very inner tip of the blade is touching rather than the entire cutting edge. I found the only way to start a hole with it was to use an ice chisel to cut out a little section, and then apply my entire weight to the top of the auger and slowly turn to get any part of it to catch. After doing this for 3 holes which took me nearly an hour, I was about to give up when the screw used to hold the two sections together snapped. Needless to say I immediately gave up and packed everything up and returned it to the store. Hopefully you didn't buy it, because an auger that can't cut a hole isn't worth much...

I had a 7" Strikemaster lazer hand auger years ago that did the same thing. A 2 minute call to Strikemaster CS resulted in a new auger in the mail with a Return authorization for the old auger. There was a problem with the angle of the head on the old auger and the new one worked fine. Sometimes a little sugar works better than vinegar.

Hey I have a blazer with them Chinese blades its the best damn door stop I have ever owned that's the only thing I can think of to use it for as it drilled one whole before I quite using it lol

In my youth I had a GF who was a figure skater. Man O man could she ever go into a spin and auger a hole as fast as any hand auger back then and if i recall she look darn pretty doing it? But to stay on the thread thanks for the info. Once again proves those no name brands aren't worth the money.

Sounds like the Lazer auger w/ China blades on it to me. I have an 8" and it just is poor quality. I did call CS and they shipped me a new set "made in Sweden" cuts much nicer, but will definitely look at another company's product first.

i actually still have on of those scoop augers! bought in the late 60's
