I have drilled holes with similar too. At here we call it "lusikkakaira", straight translated "spoonauger".

Thanks for the heads up, I almost picked up one of these augers this morning, but didn't because of this thread. I'll just keep using my Dewalt with the 6" hole saw.

I was going to buy one of those augers.....glad I passed on it.....I had the money out of my pocket in twenty minutes....for each 20.....three 20's almost 45 minutes.....Decided not to buy it, as at that rate the ice we do have would be melted by the time I got to the lake...

With one of those old spoon augers that I use to have I like it. I had a old boy up the road from me sharpen it. It had to be done right or it would not cut a hole. He would sharpen it so it would only cut 1/2 the ice from the hole. It would leave about a 2inch cylinder in the hole. It would cut just about as easy as the new lazers. The old boy die on me so I had to retire the auger. Now I have a lazer.

Probably he's left handed and using the right handed auger. Poor sap needs to be matched up w/ a left handed auger.

If you're in the Southern Hemishpere do you need to spin your auger in the opposite direction ?

Probably decided to go fishing again and he's out there trying to drill holes.

I would have gone home and got the chainsaw.

My money would be on incorrect angle, or backwards blades.

if u ax me i wold nt never buy 1 of dem augers . i use a spud bar and a post hole diger , the kind with da off set wood handles like everyone semes 2 like my spud bar is green , i can chop a hole in less than 20 min. with my set up , it dont come a part like urs do

Hey, sorry everyone about not putting the auger name

. The auger was the HT Arctic Express 7" hand auger. I thought I was replying to someone's previous post where they were asking for reviews on it, but apparently I didn't hit the right button...Sorry for the delay in the response as well. I haven't been around my computer much since I posted and just got back around.

To answer some of the other questions, yes I did have the right end down, and yes I was spinning it in the right direction (I even checked spinning the other way at one point just to make sure I wasn't being that stupid...

) I checked out the blades, and they were on the correct way. I had the day off, it was gorgeous outside, and I had driven an hour to get to the spot, so I was pretty determined to get a few lines in the water at least. I got it on sale for $58 (probably should have been a heads up), but was looking for a new auger, and that was definitely a nice price point.

@bogeyjoker, I'm sure there was something wrong with the angle as well. As I said, the blades were set at such a steep angle that only the very corners would be in contact with the ice to start a hole. Even with a hole going, they clearly weren't set right and refused to bite unless I leaned all my weight into it.

@adkwileyy, its probably the case that other people have this auger and love it. Unless the rest of the forum starts lighting up with rave reviews though, I don't think I'll be getting another...

kaos12fly, Congrats on coming back and letting us know which auger you were talking about. I think most people would have read the comments and said to heck with this. At times we're a pretty rough crowd, but it's all meant in fun.
