Run away pike
« on: Dec 11, 2007, 09:41 PM »
My very first Icefishing trip was with my uncle and cousins. We were fishing for perch using minnows. Im sitting in the Icehouse with my cousin who doesnt know much about fishing.Im looking thru the ice hole watching the perch. Then they all swam away and a huge pike swam by the hole. Instinct tells me to start jigging so I do. Then he hits I quickly set the hook and get ready to play him. Then my cousin grabs my line and pulls him thru the hole and he spits the hook. so immediatley try grabbing him. But he was at least 2 and a half feet long. I instinctively go for the gills and he bites me. So i lose my grip and he slips into the Ice hole. I tryed going in after him but he got away. So I went and told my uncle who was 20 yards away trying to catch what I think was the same Pike. He didnt believe me .

If he bit you, then all you needed to do to convince your uncle about the Pike would to have showed him your shredded hands gushing blood all over the ice!! ;)

I remember catching blues with a friend off the pier in Daytona, you think an old northern is teethy. My friend couldn't get the hook out of one of his fish, so I tried helping him and got bit by that teethy bastad. My finger looked like a piece of hamburger from a 14 inch fish.

Are you sure it wasn't your hand hiting the gills instead.  You should grab a pike by the gill plate not the gills.
When Hell freezes over !!!!  I'll be there icefishing!!!
