Title: Dumbest thing you've done on the ice
Post by: holehopper on Sep 30, 2009, 08:45 PM
Well.  A bit of a confession to make here boys.  I've been ice fishing a long time, but this past winter, I hit a low point.  Here's the story.....I'm up at a buddy's cabin one weekend with a group of guys catching jumbo perch.  We are in about 30 feet of water and the lake is really clear, so we are doing a lot of fishing with cameras.  I get up early one morning and decide that I'm going to get out on the ice early.  I load up on my snowmobile and head out.  I get to the hot-spot and start to set up.  Now, I tend to sometimes overdo it on my ice-fishing gadgets and this might be where things started to go wrong for me.  You see, I had bought one of those "quick-couplers" so I could detach my power head from the auger bit.  Well, what the package didn't say is if you aren't careful, your bit can detach from the powerhead and become permanent lake structure.  Well, guess what happened.  Yep, drilled my first hole and there went my $100 Lazer bit.  Right to the bottom of the lake.  I had no choice but to fish in shame out of that same hole until the rest of the boys got out there with another auger.  Unfortunately, the story doesn't end there.  It gets worse (or funnier depending on your point of view).  So, I decided that I was going to get that bit back.  I marked the spot I lost it on my GPS since I knew I'd be back the next weekend.  I spent the whole week planning how I would get that bit back.  I showed up the next weekend with an industrial magnet, some rope, my GPS and my camera.  That morning we headed out to fish the jumbos again.  We fished hard until about 11:00 and the fishing started to slow down.  I decided it was now or never to get that bit.  I borrowed a buddy's auger (brand new Jiffy STX Pro...$500 auger) and headed over to the spot.  I drilled my first hole to drop my camera down and look for my bit.  No problem.  Dropped the camera down and couldn't see my bit.  Decided I would move about 15 feet over and try again.  Drilled the 2nd hole.  It was late February so there was lots of ice.  I had to run the auger all the way down to the ice and when I hit water, I could see some steam coming off the powerhead.  Those of you who have done this yourselves probably can see already where this story is going.  Dropped the camera back down.  No bit.  Decided to move again.  I grabbed my camera and the monitor and dragged it over to the next spot I was going to drill.  Started up the auger but I couldn't get it to throttle up.  I quickly determined that the throttle linkage must have frozen.  Next mistake.  I took off my glove and stuck my finger into the linkage to free it up (with the auger running).  Well, the auger throttled-up alright.....wide open and stuck wide open!!  Now anybody that uses a jiffy auger knows they spin at about 3,000 rpm or so it seemed to me.  That auger took off like a mechanical bull.  Since I was only holding on with one hand, it flew out of my grip, went about 6 feet in the air and guess where it landed......yep.....ri ght on the 30 feet of camera cord that I had drug over with me but was too lazy to coil back on the carrier.  I can tell you from first hand experience that a wide open auger makes quick work of wrapping up your camera cord for you.  It peeled off all 60 feet of camera cord in about 2 seconds flat.  Then, it proceeded to cartwheel my camera itself about 20 times.  By the time I got the auger shut off, I had covered a 10 x 10 area in bits of small black plastic and the tracks in the snow made it look like someone got attacked by a group of angry garden hoses.  No kidding I had camera parts a good 20 feet apart.  The battery went one direction, the monitor went another.  Well, after sitting there for a minute, I figured I probably should pick up the pieces and head back to fishing.  I picked up most all of the scraps of plastic and camera parts I could and then grabbed the auger.  Next problem.  The handle was loose.  As I mentioned, this was a borrowed, brand new, $500 auger.  I looked a little closer and quickly figured out that the auger gear-case had cracked on impact.  So there I stood, still hadn't recovered my $100 bit (with the $20 quick coupler on it), destroyed my Aqua-vu camera and broke the new Jiffy...oh, and had the $40 magnet in hand which I still hadn't had a chance to use.  I then did the "ride of shame" on the snowmobile back over to where my buddy (who owned the auger) was fishing with the rest of the guys in our group.  He was in his shack and hadn't heard or seen a thing.  I had to break the news to him.  Needless to say, not much was said on the ice the rest of that day.  Well, things turned out ok.  I was able to "fix" my aqua-vu (yes, unbelievably, it still works).  It looks like frankenstein, but it is a good story when someone asks what happened to the camera.  Usually it starts with "What the he!! happened to your camera???"  "How much time do you have?" is my typical response.  I returned the unused magnet and Jiffy covered the broken auger under warranty.  All in all, I was just out the bit.  So, here is my advice to all of you....don't buy a quick coupler.  However, don't hesitate to buy an aqua-vu or a Jiffy.  You won't be disappointed in either one.  So, if you are ever having a tough day on the ice, you can think of this story and know that there is someone out there having a worse day than you.  What they say is true.....you just can't fix stupid.

one word, wow!!!!

if we go fishing together, you might wanna stay clear 50 feet of anyone so as not to invite a lawsuit, lol

I guess my dumbest thing was not checking my auger blade screws to see if they were tight, and broke a blade after 2 holes. we fished them and did ok, so not all was horrible

Holehopper thank you for the story and laughs . I here are a couple of my goof's ,I arranged to go fishing with a friend we get to the lake and go to drill the first hole and my hand auger just spins and will not bite into the ice. I had recently changed blades and put the replacement set on wrong luckily my friend had a socket set in his truck and we were able to correct the problem.
Back during the winter of 1994 when I was still new to ice fishing and did not own a set of creepers and still used a spud (ice chisel ) to cut holes , I was cutting a hole when i slipped and fell losing my grip on the spud only to watch it sink down the just cut hole. Lesson learned I purchased a set of creepers and bought my first hand auger. This turned out to be a wise move the winter of 94 was usually cold for my area week of minus zero Fahrenheit temperatures for low -highs in single digits. A week or more later I'm fishing with a friend who introduced me to this great sport. He was still using a spud to cut holes the frigid weather allowed lakes to build up twenty plus inches of ice ,so it was a major chore for him to cut a hole. After watching me cut one hole-start a second while he is still struggling to cut his first hole, he exclaims holy crappie they sure have made improvements over the spoon auger i used to own, you're cutting the holes today.

I have one good one my buddy will never let me live down.  So I have fished with 4 wheelers a lot, ran trailers of all sorts, been dragged behind sleds and quads on a rope and a inner tube in the winter months, I had some bad first hand experiences growing up, the law of inertia is an unforgiving one.  Most of the people I have fished with who ran quads all had tow bars, I was used to hooking up and running top speed out to the fishing hole.  Well this past season, my buddy and I decided to get out one last time before I went to training to go over seas.  We decided get a room at Hells Bay, Fort Peck and a quad for the weekend.  The first morning we drive my truck down to the lake and unload my sled loaded with all sorts of gear and goodies..Since I usually pull my sled it has a rope, I hooked up it and didn't think twice, I figure a gradual slowing down into the fishing will do just fine when the time comes.  It being early morning there was plenty of other fisherman a few steps ahead of us taking off.  Being new to the area I wanted to get a general idea of what bays most people were fishing and decided to head out to the main body after them and see what direction they are heading.  My buddy says take is slow, I say yeah, yeah.  I take off and am quickly losing site of everyone heading off in random directions, I hear buddy tell me to slow down,  I ignore him and speed up a little.  I had been checking behind me every other second until then, I was focused on the quads I could barely see, then  I hear a loud yell and a punch to the back simultaneously. I immediatly let off the throttle, making matters worse,  I turned my head just in time to see the sled spill over.  Dozens of minnows all over the ice, a bent auger, broken cooler, smashed heater and many broken beers spread out over a 50 foot area by the time I made it to a stop.  I got the auger to fire up, punched a hole and managed to save most of the minnows and many of the beers.  After words the handles needed some straightening but it worked okay.  The cooler was a loss.  After scrambling around cleaning up the rest of my mess and a few choice curse words, my buddy told me that he didn't think I could hear his early warnings to slow down and smacked and yelled at me to get my attention so I would know the sled was dog tailing at that speed.

Hilarious guys!! This is why I like ice fisherman - not much can phase us -  we sit on a bucket on a frozen lake at temps that make bears stay inside and call it a great time. Wish I could add to the wonderful mishaps of you fellas, but apparently I am doing something wrong. I promise I will try harder this winter so I can come back with a zinger for you.

Tight lines and for goodness sakes be careful out there!

That would have really gotten spendy if you had to replace the friends auger, your bit AND the aqua view...I thought that kind of freak thing only happened to me!  here is just a sample of my idiocy :P

I went on a trip to Lake Winnibigoshish last winter and it was just one set of errors after another!  The first morning we leave from the hotel to get bait and head to the lake, we'll we get up there and realize the minnow bucket had fallen over and all the minnows were frozen to the bed of the truck (brand new Ford too), thankfully some others in the group lent some minnows to my fishing partner and I so we at least had something.  So being the efficient fisherman I am I chiseled some frozen minnows out of the truck and put them in a coffee cup to thaw out in front of the Mr Heater (I could still use the heads for bait) that worked until the coffee cup melted in half being next the heater(I didn't realize coffee cups COULD melt).  The next day both of us had our lines melted in half by the heater (see a trend here?) along with putting a nice burn spot on my new $200 coat (ouch!).  Not to be fazed we decided to try a different spot but as we were packing up to leave the guy I was fishing with let the shanty flap fall onto the heater and it promptly melted the nylon zipper in the middle and started the shanty on fire...thankfully I was right there and was able to douse the flames with my bare hands...fun stuff.  Somehow we were still able to make the shanty flap zip closed but there was about an 8" gap from the fire that was too melted to zip  :P.  Soooo the next day (the last mercifully) we headed out again and were setting up camp when I realized I had left the hose to the propane tank back at the lodge...DOH!  Luckily it was a balmy 10 degrees and windy :-[.  Someone in our group took pity on us and lent us a couple of 1lbers to make it through the day  :)

Moral of the story: buy a Buddy heater and NOT the sunflower type Mr Heater especially if you have the luck(or stupidity) that I do!

These stories are hilarious.  The best part is anyone one who doesn't ice fish wouldn't understand it at all. Last winter I was going fishing and had my bucket of minnows on the floor on the passenger side.  I don't remember what happened exactly but I had to hit the brakes a little too hard and water and minnows went everywhere on the passenger side.  I pulled over and picked up all the minnows and there were few casualties and the bucket had enough water to support life until I got to the lake.  However, a couple months later I was cleaning out my truck and when I moved the floor mat there was a strange mold growing everywhere underneath the mat.

Another story, when I was much younger I was fishing in my uncle's new fish house and I had a pot of warm water on the stove to keep the holes open.  Some how I ended up putting the pot of hot water on the carpet, when I went to pick it up the pot had fused to the carpet, and when I finally pried it up it was a perfect black melted carpet circle.  Man I thought he was going to kill me.

Your all tooo funny! Ive lost rods, blades, scoopers, rod holders, filleting knives and a cell phone down the hole. Burned down a shack and melted a zipper on another. Lost a portable BBQ on the way out. Stepped in a 10" hole past the knee several times. Killed the truck battery with a satelite radio and locked the keys in the truck. Had the wife come out to pick me up in the dark with a dead battery but never have I ever wound the camera up in the auger! Cant wait to get back on the ice!

Ok I guess I'll get in the mix too. I was fishing last ice on the saginaw river with a guy from work. We had never fished together before. I get ready to grab my hand auger when he says AHH you don't need that I have my gas auger! I have on a Brand new pair of arctic carharts bibs that I specially ordered, and this is where it gets good. He drills his holes and I take the auger and walk over 10 yards and start drilling. Well I'm getting pi**ed off, this blade is so dull I'm making snow cones, so I lean on it! When it gets to the bottom you guessed it, the auger punches threw and hangs up! Now he never told me the throttle sticks! The auger KICKS ME BACK and breaks free, of my hands, the hole, and flips into the air. :woot: NOW OF ALL PLACES TO LAND AS I'M JUMPING BACK it hits my cuff of my bibs, still wide open!!!!!!! The auger runs up my leg winding up my pants leg around the cutter head as it slices threw. I grab the head just as it slices THREW BY MY ZIPPER BY YOU GUESSED IT MY LITTLE BUDDY AND FRIENDS. Now my friend sees this and runs to help, and as i hold it spinning still wide open trying to lean back because the handles are beating off the ice. I yell shut this ***** off!! We get it shut down and he says sorry, oops I forgot to mention the throttle and blade! I 'm not really listening because I'm still looking at my leg and other things in amazement.  :thumbsup:The BLADE NEVER CUT THREW MY SKIN OUNCE. I had a couple scratches and a few bruises!  WOW I'M IN ONE PIECE!!! We never fished together after that, maybe we will try it again this year I'LL TAKE MY GAS AUGER!!  Well hope you like the story guys, and thats my DUMBEST MOMENT!!!

I've got nothing on you guys yet, I think the worst thing I've done is run someone's tip-up over with my quad at 5 am on the start of a derby..... I gave him one of mine as a replacement, he was not happy.....

Other dumbest thing I've done is me and a couple buddies planned a 4-day weekend trip to Little Bay De Noc, which is about a 4 hr drive for me.  I planned on bringing my quad along, not really knowing what ice conditions were like up there, so I dragged it to my buddies house, we were gonna take his Explorer up there, had more room to haul stuff, I just had a small GMC Sonoma at the time.  We hooked my trailer up and took off, north we go.  Well we get to Kipling, (small town on LBDN)  and we get the quad setup to go, only to find out I left the friggin key back home.  That's embarrasing, having your buddy tearing you a new one because "he pulled this piece of crap" up there just so it was a 600lb paperweight.  Good thing ice was good enough to drive on, or it would have really been a nightmare.

I've since learned my lesson and keep a spare key under the seat.

You're a lucky man, last year a guy and his daughter were killed on Lake Winnebago, WI during the sturgeon spearing season driving a full size truck into a crack a little wider than that......

Hopefully you do keep on top, we all hear too many stories about people losing their lives on the ice.....

i fished with my buddy tom for many years, mostly for the amusement, laughing at the things tom would do on the ice. one early morning after cutting 15 holes for 3 of us to set our tip ups in. we proceded to help each other out. i skimmed the slush out of a hole as tom proceded to get his tip up ready. tom pulls a lead clip on sounder out of his pocket to check the depth of the water. when he stood over the hole, and just dropped the sounder down the hole, without clipping it to the line. i stood there in awe. lol. 2 to 3 seconds goes by, and tom still looking down the hole. i burst into laughter, and proceded to ask questions like, are you going to buy a sounder for every hole tom? and after dropping one down every hole, how are you going to know how deep it is? lol. tom was razzed all day, and the funny part is he has continued to drop sounders down holes like that. not twice, or 3 times, but up to around 10 times that i know of. will tom ever learn?

Ice fishing in Maine, my buddy Tom and I are very competitive. Matter of fact we're competitve about everything in life. Well one day we're out brookie fishing close to an outlet, which has open water. I have a tip-up about 15 feet from the open water and the first 3 hours of the day I caught 6 trout through the same hole. As I was cooking lunch I turned to hear Tom drill a hole between my flag and open water. Of course after cursing at him I figured oh what the heck let him try to catch a few trout seeing he had been skunked all morning. About 2 hours goes by, he catches 2 right in a row out of his new hole. Now were both standing about 8 to 10 feet from open water and I come up with the idea of pulling my trap and thowing the bait over the side of the ice into open water. I took one step towards the area I targeted and all of a sudden the ice gives way. Splash I go in. I see the look on Tom's face, like do I help or do I run. I watched the video on here on how to retract yourself from the water and was able to get out safely. But talk about cold. I don't know what pissed me off more, him rolling on the ground laughing at me or the fact I had about 1 mile walk off the pond. Thank God I had extra clothes in the truck. When I went back to see if Tom was nice enough to pull the rest of my tipups, come to find out he was still pulling fish through what he calls the best fishing hole he ever found.

Yes we still fish together!

My very first time out Ice Fishing I chose to wear a pair of steel toe work boots in -20C weather!  That was the first and last time I have ever done that!  It's been two years now and I haven't done anything worse then that, so I'm one of the lucky ones so far judging by some of the other posts!!!

I don't know about dumb...but this might do:

Set 2 tip ups...go back to the homeade 180 pound poly propylene shack.  Drop 2 lines in the shack on bobbers.  Heater blasting.  Take off the goose down parka.  Flag!  Set pole quickly in sleeve of parka hanging on chair.  Go to spinning flag.  Wait...set hook.  Pull...and pull...line getting very heavy....yell for brother and gaff.  Brother and gaff waiting for huge fish.  Fish is huge!!  Pull on tip up line hard.  Noise from shack.  Keep pulling huge fish.  Fish comes up...6 pound pike. 6 Pound pike had 2 jigs wrapped around it's head just like ones fished in shack.  Hmmmm....pulled on jig lines.  See my 2 rods from permy coming up (remember - one in the coat sleeve).  Parka got pulled onto Mr. Heater...now see dark acrid smoke from shack...smell burning hair.  Brother pulls out parka...beating flaming parka on ice.  Ice hut destroyed.  Parka gone.  Good fun.  +1 pike ...  minus one parka and shack.

fish = 1
We = didn't

Kinda long so hold on...  Fishing up in Alaska gets cold in the winter. So when it warmed up to about 0 degrees its a heat wave.  So i con my buddy to go fishing on George Lake.  About 150 miles from my place.  This right about the time where gas prices were WAY up around $4.90 a gallon.  So we load up the snowmachines and the sled and all the rest of the gear.  We finally get out there about 3 hours too late.  Start the machines and load the sled up, get down to the ice and get ready to drill some holes.  The trip goes south here.  The Auger i had rented from the Army base in town. It was in good order till i put it in the sled, and from all the bouncing around, had broken the throttle linkage.  I managed to get that fixed w bailing wire.  Start drilling a hole when about 5 feet in, my auger starts jumping and spewing silt from the bottom  of the lake.  Yep i had drilled into the ground.  So i try drilling in another spot. Blades are toast.  Well at least we can enjoy the warm weather and drink the growler of beer we brought.  I open the cooler and the growler had popped off the cap and now my extra gloves, neck gaiter, and my digital camera were under about 3 inches of beer.  So we drain the cooler and drink what beer we could. Plan of action: ask other people fishing to use their auger. Go to start the machines and mine wont start.  An hour later i get it started. We motor over and ask to use their power auger (i know both these guys since they work at Sportsmans Warehouse), the suddenly clam up and dont wanna loan it out. Eventually i get one of the guys to drill 3 holes so we can fish.  Well 4 hours later we have no fish and its time to leave.  We pack up the gear and head out.  When i get back to the truck i notice my new ugly stick suddenly doesnt have a reel on it, but has line strung down the trail.  A few min. later my friend pulls up with my broken reel and a crapload of line in his hand.  Apparently it had worked it way to the outside of the sled and caught on a tree where it proceeded to destroy all but my Ugly Stick. Total cost for the trip: around $600 and not one fish to speak of. ::)

OUCH DUDE!   i almost burnt down my quickfish 6 last year on crosswind lake. it was -38 and the can on my buddy heater ran out, so when i went to switch it well....all the other cans had ice built up in the threading, so it leaked while i threaded it, but then got a real quiet leak and i thought it was good.....hahaha, sparked her up and flash! im enveloped in flames! burnt my beard pretty good and melted part of my collar, as well as singed the rest of my facial hair....well great thing the door behind me was wide open, cuz i grabbed it and flung it out the door! my buddy was really worried after that, but we got her fixed by god and we fished, and froze even with the heater cookin, and the stove on too....at least we caught 1 nice laker for dinner

year before last a friend of mine bought a nice jiffy auger for $500, floor model! we took it out to lake louise.....well his older brother shows up with a couple pals, drunk of course, takes the auger and walks over to a spot (i told my buddy "this can only end in trouble", he commences drilling and attempts to drill to china! drilled into sandbar, not once , not twice, but 3 times, wrecks the brand new auger and ruins the trip!.....then back in Anchorage, he takes it back to sportsmans and attempts to exhange it for a new one to make it up to my buddy! haha he ended up shellin out the cash! :roflmao:  like i say " no one cares when its not thiers" i dont ever let other people borrow my gear, cuz if its gonna get wrecked, its gonna get wrecked by me!!

another stupid thing that happened to us on a crosswind trip (22 mile ride) last year....we headed out with 2 24packs of beer.....one didnt make it...we know we're gonna be wishin for that other one and we figger it gone for good..(this was a 3 day trip with 5 people)....get this!  next day we are fishing, and we spot a snowmachine headin our way....closer closer.......we figger hes an officer thats gonna check us......its a guy we know from anchorage, and he pulls up and asks....."yall lose some beer"? he had found our beer, searched the lake till he saw us, and delivered....WHAT A GUY! of course we gave him a reward....how many people would do that?

Mine was minor in comparison last year. I bought a new tackle box and other assorted gear in prep for last years season. First day of safe ice a dragged my sled and gear to Lake Lonely (can't use ATVs on this lake and I currently didn't have one). Drug it about a mile and came accross a guy who landed a nice pike. I offered to measure it and weigh it. I walked back to my Jetsled to get my scale and realized I left my brand new tacklebox at home. Had to drag everything a mile back to the truck, go home and get my tackle box. I only had to drive a 5 miles home, but I was exhausted but went back out anyway  ;D

25 years ago back in Wisconsin when my buddy an I were 18 we built a shanty out of old scrap lumber. We used it for the season but after a warm spell it got cold again and it froze in tight. We talked about chopping it out but decided that because neither one of our parents wanted to let us store the "god forsaken shack" in the off season we would just have ourselves one last warming fire on the ice. The plan was to fish until it burned down enough to clean up the charred remains and call it a season. Everything was going according to plan. We had a nice big fire and were even catching some fish.... until the cops showed up. (2 police snowmobiles and a squad car on the bank)
When we told them it was our own shanty they didn't believe us and hauled us to the police station where I had to make the interesting phone call to my dad. Apparently earlier in the year they had a problem with someone who had burnt someone elses shanty down and they figured it was us. I asked them if they thought we would be that stupid to stay and fish if we were going to burn someone elses shanty. They didn't have a good answer.
To make a long story shorter they finally figured out that we weren't vandals and charged us with violating a burning ordinace. It was definately one of my more interesting outings.

You're a lucky man, last year a guy and his daughter were killed on Lake Winnebago, WI during the sturgeon spearing season driving a full size truck into a crack a little wider than that......

Hopefully you do keep on top, we all hear too many stories about people losing their lives on the ice.....

I think of that everyday how it all could have been worse.   :'( :'(  Next time will not have head in ass could have lost me and my best friend of 45 yrs.   :o :o

oooh man i just remembered something messed up that happened to me on my way up to lake louise once.....

so i drive a shortbed ext cab chevy cheyenne 1500......not much room for my stuff and no trailer....so at sutton 1 hour into the drive the wind is blowing head on at us about 90mph gust and steady 50mph....we're driving 60mph into.....in the bed of the truck i had my snowmachine, auger, gas, and big jet sled was tucked in at an angle to the sidewall and snowmachine.tucked inside the jet sled is my treasured tackle box with EVERYTHING in it. the jet sled was strappedn down pretty good, but not good enough.....came around a corner and the wind caught the lip of the jet sled, the strap snapped and the sled and tackle box was RIPPED from the bed of the truck! i turn around pull over.....lures, baits, scents, hooks, sinkers, batteries, everything is scattered on the highway and shoulder for 100 yards..... wait whats that? my one flashlight, rolling back and forth in the road, had turned on at impact.....luck? im sure....the wind lets up a little bit, but not much...with the flashlight my buddy and i search diligently for everything in the pitch dark....traffic was fairly light thanks to god.... took an hour but we found pretty much all my tackle that was important, the batteries ( one was shot), and most of the bait and scents....the sled- HA! WAS 150 YARDS AWAY WHEN SPOTTED, rapidly being blown across a hay field. chased it down, hauled it back, repacked everything...the tackle box was un salvagable, completely obliterated.  my buddies two boys got out to pee, one starts peein into the wind, the others downwind from him and sprinkled his older brother pretty good! nothin like adventure!

Last year was my first season and first time on the ice. I was out my very first time by myself to top it all off. I had 1 pole, half a dozen jigs, some waxies and my ice picks. I sat on a 5 gallon bucket and used my ice picks to open holes from the previous days fishers.

There was one other guy on the lake about 30yds away and the ice got into a big noise episode and I hit my belly and laid there.... the other guy came running over and asked if I was ok... i asked if the ice was supposed to do that and he said it was and that the ice was 14" thick.

20 years ago, before the advent of portable ice shelters, my brother in law and myself decided we'd bring a small tent out on the ice to be used to warm up on those below zero days.  The day we went happened to be a windy day, one of those that makes a blizzard out on the ice with all of the blowing snow.  We set the tent up, the type with the two long rods that you fish through and presto, the tent was up.  We put a couple items in the tent to prevent it from blowing away (or so we thought) so didn't stake it.  Well, we're out, hand drilling holes in 24 inches of ice with a BAD hand auger, when we look only to see our little tent cartwheeling down the ice.  We were beat from the hand drilling, but had to trek probably a half mile to retrieve the tent.  Several times, as we approached it, we'd be foiled by the wind blowing it further down the lake.  In a way, we were ahead of our time, but on the other hand.... ??   :-\

I was once invited to fish with a buddy at a populated lake with lots of houses and cabins on. We drove on the ice and in front of a few houses. It was early and one friendly fellow came down and started BSing with us. He was from my old country so we hit it off right away. He goes back to his cabin and brings down a bottle of his home made moonshine. The fishing was not so good so I started drinking some moonshine with him. My buddy didn't want to have any of the good drink. The stories were flying and the shine was going down fast. We finished the bottle and I wasn't into fishing much. Couldn't focus on my rod tip and everything was kind of fuzzy looking. So I climbed into the back of my buddies open pickup box. Passed out right there in the warm sunshine. Dumb thing to do with my buddy the jokester around. We were using chicken parts for bait for lakers. As I'm passed out he takes a chicken neck out of our bait bag. Sticks this chicken neck in my mid section in my unzipped snowmobile suit. And zips it up till the chicken neck is stuck in my zipper, so it looks like my manhood is sticking out of my mid section and out threw my suit. My buddy then proceeds to take pictures of me passed out with my chicken neck manhood sticking out. Well I guess a few locals had come down to fish and my buddy pointed me out to them. A good laugh was had by all who saw me. One lady went up and got her cat and the cat was put in the back of truck with me. I woke up to from all the histerical laughter that was going on. They were laughing at the cat that was chewing on my manhood and there was my buddy taking pictures. So I dont ever drink around my buddy anymore.

I was fishing with my artificial eye in and sight fishing down my hole. Looked up and it popped out of the socket and fluttered down my ice hole. I wasn't quick enough and it slipped thru my fingers and all I could do was watch it sink down to the depths as it looked back at me. 1,800$ later I got a new one and no longer fish around a ice hole with it in. So if anyone sees me on ice.....this is what I look like ;)2

Okay, here goes.
This is in nowhere North Dakota. We are taking my bud town to town for his birthday. Nothing better to do in the middle of nowhere. It is around 4pm and we get a call from another friend saying the fishing was hot. Like any good angler our DD has all kinds of equipment in the back of the suburban, so we figured we would check it out. We had a case of beer and a bottle of peppermint schnapps so lets fish for and hour or two. We head out on the ice and set up with our bud already fishing. Fish and drinks are plentiful and I feel a nap coming on. I lean back in my chair to close my eyes for a minute, and the next thing I know I have an excruciating pain in my right hand. I wake up to find that I had fallen asleep with a cigarette in my hand and it had burned down to my woolen glove (note I didn't dress for fishing that morning). Turns out wool is flammable. Hand of fire :%$#!:!!!!!! First reaction was to plunge my hand down the hole. Got the fire out and thankfully not much damage to my hand was done. The rest of the guys were laughing so hard they fell off their buckets. The birthday boy still recalls that event as his favorite b-day story. Glad I could contribute. For all you smokers out there, be mindful when you light up.

That story does blow mine out of the water, but here we go.

So me and a buddy had a long weekend so we decided to go to a lake that is about 4 hours where we are stationed at.  We left after work on Friday afternoon and got to the lake around 10 or so.  After a goods night rest we got up early ready to fish.  so we load up the sled and attach it to the rented ATV we got.  After spending about 30 Min's trying to get our ATV started we where  finally off.  After driving out onto the lake a bit i looked back and saw that we had lost a stand for our heater so i yell at my buddy to stop so we can turn back and pick it up.  Unfortunately we didn't have a tow bar on our sled so you can just imagine stopping an ATV going about 25 mph the ATV stopped but the sled just kept right on moving all of our gear went flying a good 40 foot radius all around us.  well finally we get all of our gear picked up including that damn heater stand and head off again.  after about 20 minutes of looking for a place to fish we came upon what looked like a good spot.  after unloading our sled we are startin to get anxious to get our lines in the water.  Well next problem neither of us had an auger so we had to rent one from the outdoor rec.  well no one who works there knows anything about ice fishing and not thinking we left the auger out in the truck over night and the auger was about probably one of the first models that jiffy came out with.  so after trying to fire it up for about another half our a guy came over and drilled us a few holes.  luckily we where able to set up our shelter and blast the heater on it for a little bit so it did fire up after about 45 Min's.  well you are probably sitting there thinking with how bad this trip went we had to have caught fish.  nope we caught one little perch the entire day.  at the end of the day after a rough day with the sun going down to put icing on the cake we ended up about 10 feet from driving right into a methane pocket.  so that was day one day two is almost as good.  getting out onto the ice a bit earlier and a bit easier we get to a spot that looks promising and get all of our holes drilled and all of our tip ups set up.  about 30 seconds later i look over and see that we are leaking gas from our ATV.  as i hurry up and get all of the gear packed up my buddy is trying frantically to get the ATV started luckily as i get the sled hooked up he got the ATV fired up and we where gone after only fishing for about 30 seconds.  upon getting back to our truck and room we decide that it isn't worth it to go back out so we load up the truck and take off about 2 hours down the road the radiator hose decides to blow up about 10 miles out of some Poe dunk town.  after gettin a ride into town my buddy shows back up with a high pressure washing machine hose he found in some backroom of the local general store.  finally we get it replaced and back on the road only to wind up with a flat about an hour outside of home.  well that's my story sorry about the length but i really couldn't leave any of this out.  this was by far the worst fishing trip i have ever gone on.  however it wasn't the worst weekend.  because it goes along with the old adage a bad day of fishin is better then a good day at work.  thanks for reading my post

i think the worst i did that i will admit was going to a friends ice house and taking my spikes off at the door so i dont slice his rugs up.  drinking some of his shine and a few beer and telling a few stories and more beer.  now my bladder is real full and got to take a leak, open the door to ice that looks like a mirror step out walk to a safe spot not to close. Start going, and here my favorite word FLAG. Go to run and splat flat on my face in a big yellow puddle...always wear your cleats

i fished with my buddy tom for many years, mostly for the amusement, laughing at the things tom would do on the ice. one early morning after cutting 15 holes for 3 of us to set our tip ups in. we proceded to help each other out. i skimmed the slush out of a hole as tom proceded to get his tip up ready. tom pulls a lead clip on sounder out of his pocket to check the depth of the water. when he stood over the hole, and just dropped the sounder down the hole, without clipping it to the line. i stood there in awe.
WOW !!! That made me laugh out loud. Great story, and told very well !!!

Took a couple of guys from work out to catch some pike. They really wanted to give this a try.
They are brothers in law and called to ask if they could bring their buddy whom I didn't know. I said sure why not.
They brought two snowmachines and I had mine. One was Jeremy's and the other was his wifes that his brother in law  was driving. The third guy I didn't know rode backwards on one machine holding on to a cooler of beer.
We get out to my shack and drill some holes. Well all the tip up are set in old holes we re-drilled that are all in a line. Around each hole is glare ice from all the times I had redrilled the old holes. I got first flag and small pike Jeremy got second flag and small pike then bryce did the same. Their buddy couldn't catch nothing so we let him have several tries when the flags would go up.
About the third time the farthest tip up goes off. So he runs and falls feeet higher than his head on glare ice at first tip up in line and lands on his head. He gets back up and runs toward tip-up and does the same thing at near hole number two. Finally gets near flag that is up and does it again. We could hear his head smack from over 100' away.OUCH! :roflmao: Lost that fish too.
Then after no flags for about an hour he decides to put beer down and ride snowmachine belonging to Jeremys wife. Gets it revved wide open on glare ice patch finally gets a little traction and flips it landing on his head. Knocked him out for 5-10 seconds. The handle bars are bent so he bends them back and decides to take off again. Comes back 5 minutes later but has to keep stopping to turn skis by hand. He had broke handlebars clean off.
Not sure how Jeremy's wife took it and now I don't fish with drunks anymore

About 10 years ago. A friend and I went to a derby, first derby for me. The lake was unknown to both of us. So we set out and picked a spot, I didn't like the spot but I said what the H@ll. We drilled two holes with the hand auger. He started drilling the third as I rigged the first two. I sounded them and realized we were only in a foot of water. The third he was drilling  was right into the ground. The auger was junk. Other fishermen were commenting on our location. So embarrassing. There was not much room left and nobody offered to cut holes for us. ugh. Now I live on the lake, and know they drain it and have a topo. 20 feet at its deepest. No more drilling for oil!!! :-\

I got two beauties.  Back about 20 years ago, my buddies and I were fishing and drinking on a lake in the U.P., waiting for two of our buddies to show.  I wandered off the take a leak and see two people walking around an island towards us.  I motion my buddies over and we load up with as many snowballs as we can make.  Just as the two guys make it past the island, we proceed to unload a massive barrage on two DNR officers coming to check our licenses.  They were pretty good about it though.

The other one was over 30 years ago when I was pretty young.  I was cutting a holes with a hand auger and had a chunk of ice built up on the blades.  I went to clean it of and gashed my hand really, really bad.  I figured my Dad was going to be mad, cause he was always harping about the blades, so I didn't want to tell him.  After about an hour the snow around me was covered in blood, he comes over to check on me and I'm nearly unconcious from blood loss.  9 stitches at the local clinic and a stern warning from the doc not to be stupid was the result

Funny stories guys!
Last year fishing the NH derby I went out early on Waukewaun and had a tough go of it getting across the lake because of all the snow on the ice. It was unseasonably warm and the snow was melting so you were ok as long as you walked on the snowmobile tracks. Unfortunatly I did not have a way to let the wife know this when she came out later with some lunch for me. She was fine for the first 60 feet off from shore and then she went down. She leterally went 3' under the snow level almost swimming on top of the ice. Now i dare say that I was cracking up since I was far enough away that she could not hear me laughing, although I could feel the four letter words coming from her at the time. After she pulled herself out it was back to the house to get changed and read a book by the fire the rest of the day. we'll see if she comes out with me this year.

K 2 years ago after working a night shift I decided to go to cotton point on lake George to do some fishing I set up my tip ups and got my portable shanty all set up sat in my chair and started jigging. The next thing I remember is getting up to take a leak and relizing that I was on the other side of the bay 200 yards from my tip ups.   I forgot to tie down the shanty.    The only good thing is that I fished the bay and not the main lake  who knows were I would of ended up that day

Last year I dragged all my junk and kids close to 2 miles out on Lake George. Set up my floorless portable and cut 1 hole inside it. Before I even had a chance to get a line in it, my oldest found that 8" hole with his leg. Dumb on my part and his. No more holes in the shack when the boys are with me! Last week my youngest managed to find one the same way. Chips off the 'ol bloch they are. I'm destined for a wet foot this year.

Me and a couple friends drove out to Slave lake to do some fishing, grabbed a hotel at High Prairie and headed out fishing for the day. Wind came up bad and things turned into a snow storm, we set  up for a bit close to the launch then I saw the shanty town about 3miles away when the wind slowed for a bit. So off we go in the truck.
So after a while and only 3 walleye later we decide to head back to town. We got about 100yrds and stuck so out comes the shovel, get out and moving again beating a trail back to shore. Finally we get about 3/4 mile and get stuck again, shovel out and start shoveling break shovel.
Call buddy to come pull us out, tell him to bring shovels.
Buddy shows up. Tell him to make sure he doesn't get stuck. He gets stuck 300yards from shore. Walk 2 miles to him. Never brought shovels! Start digging out truck with broken shovels. Crash in truck for the night waiting for sister to bring shovels after she gets off work.
Shovel out truck in like 10 min with shovels  ::) Go to town have breakfast, go home and have a nap. Find a snocat to pull other truck off lake. Shell out $600 for Snocat, hotel (didn't even sleep in) and food! Lesson learned don't call buddy who doesn't listen for help anymore. And get off the lake when the blizzard starts up.

Well this was coming off the Ice, One of the places I fish the guy that owns the point has a large boys club and we set flags and sit in the boys club and have a few brews. Ha ya sometimes a few too many! Well there was a narrow path shoveled from the lake and I was coming back from checking tip ups and I managed to step on the top of my favorite pair of hodgeman boots with my other foot with cleats on and the cleat ripped a huge hole in the boot I fell flat on my face. Jumped right back up, first thing I do is look to see if any one was looking. Thank goodness no one seen it. But the moral of this story is don't drink and wear cleats. They do a lot of damage  :(

Icechip ......better be careful where you pass out heh old boy  :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:
and be careful of that potato moonshine ;)

I was fishing with my artificial eye in and sight fishing down my hole. Looked up and it popped out of the socket and fluttered down my ice hole. I wasn't quick enough and it slipped thru my fingers and all I could do was watch it sink down to the depths as it looked back at me. 1,800$ later I got a new one and no longer fish around a ice hole with it in. So if anyone sees me on ice.....this is what I look like ;)2

Is that your idea of an inexpesive flasher?

I went ice fishing for the second time in my life.  I didn't yet have proper boots for the sport.  I was holding my leather work boots (while on my feet) way too close to the sun flower heater and I was HEAVILY intoxicated.  I noticed the smell of smoke in the house only to see that my boots had caught on fire.  I beat the flames out with my bare hands and managed to get melted rubber from the sole of his boots all over my hands.  The next day I had a hang over and a blistered left hand but I managed to make it out and buy a new pair of pack boots.

Fishing early in the morning early in the season. I walked out on the ice. In the bay the ice was 4-5" thick all over. I was walking out towards the deeper water when the edge broke off. I fell back on my arse and struggled in the wet to get back on thicker ice. Well I got back on the thick part and looked to see a big crack and water all over. I walked back thinking to myself "Well I ain't fishing out there today." Had I gone in up to my neck it would have been tough to get out. It was 5am and no one esle was any where around. Has to be the dumbest thing I have ever done. EVER.

funniest thing I ever saw:
fishing with my buddy,Mike one time...
after he sounds the hole and sets the depth of his tipup-he hooks a minnow and starts to drop the line down the hole.
He puts the line in his mouth, while he ties a slip knot to mark the depth.A big salmon flashes by the hole and grabs the minnow.Unknown to him,the line is wrapped around one of his front teeth.Ta Dahhhh....instant front tooth removal...more fun than a dentists for sure. After I picked myself up from the ice due to the fit of laughter...I asked him if he wanted to "sound" for his tooth or let it go.

Well, to revive an old thread... here's one for now. More to follow. I laughed enough reading these I gotta try and add to the mix. Bet some of you have done this one...

Fishin a tourney with a partner for pike, had a hot hole a ways off that was producing, or at least keeping us busy with flags most of the day. We hadn't been catching nearly as many fish as we had flags. Went out and reset the tip-up after a missed fish and for some reason, the rest of the day we got nothing from our "hot hole". Pulling the tip-ups in at the end of the day I found my missing depth weight, still securely attached to the baited hook in the "hot hole"......  ::)

one night whole I was in college a few of us decided to hit the ice. we were chasing a school of good crappie up and down an old creek channel and the BV and schnapps had been flowing pretty good. A friend of mine says hes gotta go make stinky, i need to pee at the same time so there we are out on the ice, He gets his coveralls down and off gets himself setteled and when he stands up he pulls up his coveralls, flips up his hood, and in the pale glow of the moonlight I can see his eyes get REAL WIDE and he starts cussing up a storm. YEP you gussed it he had not gotten his hood out of the way and now had somthing warm and slimy down his neck!
I still cant believe he was so POed that noone would leave to take him back to campus! The fish were bititng!

After a 25-year absence from ice fishing, a few friends invited me along for a weekend of hard water fun. It was like being a newbie all over again and I didn't have much of my own equipment yet. The six of us doubled up on three snowmobiles and pulled sleds around a couple different lakes. At the end of one day, I volunteered to drive a snowmobile up a hill to the place we were camping while towing a sled full of one guy's fishing equipment. I had a hard time turning my head to see how the sled was doing and the snow was deep so I had to concentrate on avoiding trees and stumps while staying on the trail. When I got to the top of the hill, I turned around to see that the sled was upside down and fishing equipment was scattered all the way down the hill. The sled had snagged a stump and overturned. We recovered everything and nothing was broken, but I didn't get an invitation this year (an annual event) and can't say I blame them. Yes, I'm "that guy" for this very dumb piece of driving. Will be walking solo on lakes this year now that we finally have ice and pulling my own sled with my own equipment.

I just made all of the dumb crap I've done seem meaningless this weekend.  I foolishly drove my quad on 1" of ice, after seeing quad tracks and trucks out on the ice I assumed it was good where I was headed, I had been there 3 weeks prior on 8" after all.  Why wouldn't it be good, when there was 18" everywhere else.... well I hopped off my quad walked 20' punched a hole, auger sliced straight thru 1" of crusty crap, I left my cover, cursed a few a times backing away slowly.... I got up to my quad and sliced another one, 1" of crap, I jumped on and floored it to shore.. No clue what kept me above the ice.

I know this has been idle for a while, but I got a laugh and wanted to contribute.

A couple of years ago I was fishing late for the crappie bite. I needed to tie on a new jig and had to put on my reading glasses. I bit the line to remove the first jig. After struggling to tie the second jig on in the dark, I finally got it. I baited it up and dropped it down the hole. It was then that I realized that I had tied it to the length of line that I had clipped off with the first jig. Lost a $7.00 titanium ant and a fresh waxie.

Forgot to buy waxies before a tournament.  Two hours from home, everyplace was sold out for the tourny.  No minnows anywhere either.  Ended up buying all the power bait Pamida had.  We didnt get a SINGLE BITE the entire tournament.  Six hours watching fish show up and then promptly leave in disgust.

Never again.  Powerbait never ever ever again.

out on the ice family and friends , reminded all the children multipkle times about thwe open water around the rock, walked past the open water and out of view to .... well I shouldnt have to explain it, while walking back to the group someone yelled "flag" and I looked over my shoulder while continuing walking ....you guessed it walked right into that open water luckily only about knee deep , feet wet laughed like hell, and the group we fish with still bring it up every year... the funniest part is kids that were 4-5 y/o are now 8-9 y/o and ask why I walked into the open water when everyone said " stay away from the water"..we just blame it on me being a flatlandah "from away"

Was fishing in a shack with four other guys for walleye. During the mid day slowtime someone suggested setting up a tip up. Inside the shack. We didn't have an auger cause we were in a rented shack on LOTW. So I set up a trap with some dead bait and we all continue jigging. Couple hours later the flag goes off and the reel is really spinning. I set down my jig rod and set the hook. It feels like a good fish and the other guys turn to watch. Long story short is the pike was going every which way under the ice and managed to pull in two deadsticks nobody was watching and my jig rod line. The fish and rods were landed but it was a huge mess of tangled line, rods, and a pike. Took 30 minutes to get it all fixed up and missed the primetime bite to boot.

Last year I was trying to find a crappie spot on a small lake. I was pulling my flip over with the poles extended so I could just fl up her over real quick after each move. After moving to a new spot and drilling a hole I flipped her over and reached in the tub to get the heater. When I glanced towards the hole I noticed a bright light emitting from the bottom of the lake 18 feet below. The light looking a lot like the lit up display screen on my $500 garmin, got my attention pretty quick. I had set the garmin on the canvas of the flip over before I popped the hole. After the hole was open I forgot about the GPS and flipped over the shack. The display stayed lit up for ten minutes before finally accepting its fate and in the process giving up all my saved weighpoints.

was fishing w/ some buddies of mine and we had a fire in a trash can lid. i took a club of wood about the size of a baseball bat and walked up to a hemlock tree and took one hell of a wild over head swing w/ all my power to bust off a dead limb that was of equal size. being a logger i should have known that hemlock is extremely hard and rubbery when frozen and the club i had bounced back and struck me directly between the eyes almost dropping me. i stumbled around for a minute holding my face lol i stuck w/ wood already on the ground after that. and yes, we were all hammmmerrrrd! probably the only reason it didn't knock me out @)

One of the firsts, as a preteen i went ice fishing. Walked a couple miles to a channel and proceeded to chop a hole, with a nuckle bumpin hatchet. Took a half hour or so and was about 3 foot at top and 3 inches at bottom. Clipped on my depth finder and dropped it into about 8 inches of water. in time i would go high tech and learn different ways to lose spuds through ice,but efficiently of course.

Layed my cell phone on my leg after a call and forgot about it.  Stood up and it swished thru my 6" hole.

When I was about 12 I was fishing with my grandpa for perch.  We had rods spread out over a flat and were each jiggin a hole.  The ice was smooth as can be with about 1/3 inch of snow on top and slippery.  When one of the set rods would get a bite I would take off running and then baseball slilde to the hole and rod and hook the fish.  My Grandpa kept warning me to stop or I was going to get hurt.  Being young and stupid I did not listen.  Next thing I  know there goes a set rod bite.  Off I go at a dead sprint  toward the hole and into my slide.  This time I hit the remnants of somones hole from the day before they cut with a spoon auger.  That chunk of ice that was frozen to the top of the ice found my knee during the slide.  I think I layed there for 45 minutes squealing in pain while grandpa kept saying..."I told you so!"  I limped the rest of the winter from that.

Drove my pickup out on the lake one morning on one of those 45 degree March days. By 4:00 I noticed the ice was getting slushy on top and I figured I better get off the ice. I made it to about 50 feet from the landing where all four tires dropped through the ice at once. The truck still stayed on the ice on it’s frame, but it was going anywhere. I ended up calling a tow truck and I spent a half hour convincing him he didn’t have to go out on the ice, just winch me in from shore.  That batch of perch cost me $58. The tow guy hung around and made a killing from the other cars and trucks still out on the ice.
