How often do you replace the blades on a hand auger?
Just put my first set on after 5 years, and only because my buddy was using it like a spud/walking stick one day, i dont fish with him anymore lol, but up until that, it always cut like butter....

Depends on how many inches you cut per season, assuming you are cutting into clean ice. If you notice the auger bogging down or taking more turns per inch of ice, time to sharpen or replace the blades.

If I was hand drilling I'd have a few sets of blades and be running a freshly sharp set at the beginning of the season. Fish307 does a blade swap sharpening service, prices seem reasonable enough to be worth never running potentially dull blades

Going on year 4 with my hand auger blades And cutting just fine.
I always make sure guard is on when traveling and yes never hit on ice hard.
As a kid my friends and I had junk blades and took two of us to barely get through ice. We didn’t move a whole lot back then. LOL

Having an extra set of blades and tools to replace them at the ready is a good idea . Even the cheaper Eskimo blades as back up is worth the price of admission . Buying in the off season is best.

If you don't bang them on the ice and treat them gently thy last a long time. I am running a ten year old set on a mora shaft.  Used it as a hand auger for six years and put it on a Rigid drill and run it another four.  Still using it this season.

I always have a spare set of blades with me.  Good way to have a bad day, get out fishing and can't put a hole in the ice...
