Title: Adventures in NE IA (update 1/4 page 1: Trip to WY)
Post by: 1coldchemist on Dec 04, 2005, 08:56 PM
Well, it's been really cold in Iowa but we've also got snow so we're not making ice real fast.  I checked out a local farm pond and the ice was pretty questionable.  I'm really glad I invested in a spud bar for the season.  I was able to walk along the shore safely and a couple spots that had been snow free and had about 3" of ice.  Still the rope and ice picks were ready.  The best part of the day was using the new Vexilar-don't know how I ever managed without one!  Managed a couple small bass and lots of smallish bluegills.  Everything was released.  All in all it was a beautiful day and I was glad to be out.  Another pond I checked had no walkable ice so be careful!

We had good ice last weekend and I was lucky enough to get out both days.  Fished two places I had never icefished before and the nice gills were really hitting.

Here's the new Otter Medium Cabin-I'm very impressed so far

Made it out to my old Wyoming stomping grounds for Christmas and did lots of ice fishing out there.  I think I blocked the Wyoming wind from my memory though-as usual it was really screaming out there. Did manage some fish though.

Got this guy-22" my biggest rainbow through the ice

Unfortunately none of those guys were slobs-the biggest there may be 10" most were 8-9, which are the size I like to eat.  The perch in that lake are very well fed and meaty so some really nice fillets come off of them.
