Been reading the threads and people suggesting bead chain jigs, what is a usual size? do the come with single hooks? I would be tipping them and most likely for perch (wp) just another arrow in the quiver as Roccus would say. any suggestions would be great as I never use them. . Thanks
-
They are killer! The chain will break though I change mine with 6 lb. flouro
Vmc just came out with way nicer ones imo
-
Yes single hook and many sizes
-
also if theres something better please advise the reviews look good but they say the chains and hooks can be weak, thanks for any real world feedback.
-
I love them for all panfish. They come in a variety of sizes with single hooks that can easily be changed. I use them for perch and crappie with small shiners or piece of worm. They are heavy and sink fast. Havent had a chain break yet but they are pretty light.

whats the normal size? 35 mm?

Yea those 1.5 are great but up into the 3” plus are still perfect it’s almost like they are just a dodger ahead of a spoon

ok thanks I found the vmc dropper chains Im assuming just change them out

I remove the chain and add a split ring and a owner singe hook that was made to replace trebles on plugs, but he large eye aids in hook ups

I'm a big fan of these, I've swapped the front treble for droppers on atleast half of my "darter" style lures and use them on a lot of spoons too. I haven't broken a chain yet but I'm sure it will happen at some point.

I use Johnson snare spoons, little cheaper than halis, but work great, have a weak hook also, I got some from Northland for replacements.

I’ve had great luck with Shuck’s Lures “Jigger Minnow”; 1 1/2 in. Size for panfish and trout.

thanks everyone, I just bought some halis and vmcs prior to reading, will report back.
-
Yep but you can also buy vmc jigs with the dropper now that are better looking and stronger
-
What is the purpose of the chain?

Sweet

What is the purpose of the chain?
It creates a finesse target for picky fish not feeling aggressive, while the jig above calls them to the dinner bell

Thanks AA

I think hali makes a few different style chains they have a beaded one I think. I could be mistaken though

One of the best ice fishing lures catches all species. My father landed 12 lb Laker on Magog on stock hali just gotta have drag set. When targeting larger fish Northland makes stronger dropper chains that hold up we'll both in single and treble hooks. Personally I'll like large hali 50 mm I believe like the weight to get back down to fish quick
-
I buy bulk chain from Michael's and make my own chain droppers for swedish pimples, kastmastersand other spoons. You literally can get a yard of chain for a buck or two. Couple split rings and a #8 siwash hook. Bada-boom. They do work well on whiteys - another arrow.
-
X2 my go to for many years now. Fast shipping, good price, stronger hooks and chains than hali, and usually throws in an extra or two.

Work great on Crappies, Bluegills & perch -- we use the smaller sizes baiting them with spikes on the hook...!
-
I have had a lot of luck with the Hali jigs in the last season or so but I'd say I have even more with a small perch pattern Forage Minnow setup. Treble hook with a few spikes usually is my most effective lure for pannies.
For the Hali's going with green and orange has been best for me and I use the treble hook, again, adorned with spikes.
-
Careful i believe nh no trebles with bait.

It’s the year of out of staters clicking and chiming in not knowing our rules.
Hence why I only stick to the NH page

Jigs look great thanks for the tips I put a few together tonight. I am happy with the quality of the vmc hooks and the hook sizes too. Hopefully get to catch fish on them soon.

Can I ask a general question about Hali-type spoons?
Do I understand correctly that the spoon itself allows the fish see it from a distance and brings them in. And then the meat on the hook catches them?
I'm seeing a few guys say they use em for gills. Gills will attack these rigs?
If so, that's good news.
Thanks in advance.

This is my take on it

I love them for perch feeding on the bottom. I use a mousie and jig the hali just off the bottom so the hook and mousie are on the bottom. It looks like a bait fish going after an aquatic insect/snail on the bottom.
