hooking shiner for trout/salmon
« on: Jan 09, 2011, 07:14 AM »
I always hook under dorsal fin (in its back) but i have been missing lots of fish lately the lip hooks no good either they seem to be biting the tail and pulling aft. they run good but if i try to set bam pulls the hook right out of the shiner. any suggestions on this issue. mostly a brown or salmon problem im guessing.. ???

try going a little farther back and use circle hooks , don't try to set hook as u will just pull out , instead just wait for them to pull usually will hook themselves

I use a light wire gamakatsu circle and hook through the nostrils.  You have to thread the hook through but
you can almost feel the path from one nostril to the other.  I add a bit of hook sharpening out
of the package (its one of those things I was to lazy to do but it honestly makes the biggest difference) and it works well on those tough trout mouths.

The other reason I do that is for bait preservation.  Usually if I'm careful I can remove the hook
with no visible damage at the end of the day.  Then the next
time I go out I hook the bastages in the same
spot.  One or two may get off because of the nostril
piercing so I check after 10 mins in the water.

Hope that helps.  My hookup rate is satisfactory
going this route and I suppose it makes sense seeing
how most gamefish are aiming at the head.

When targeting trout, i also hook my bait through the nostrils. Works well for me.
