Iņupiat fishing for sheefish at Selawik National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska
After further review, maybe it's a Ptychocheilus oregonensis. :roflmao:

Awesome!
Please forgive my naīve easterner ways, but what species is that?
-
Hey 207- they are actually Pike Minnows.
They aren't very exciting when they are bait sized but when they get this big they fight hard and are pretty unique looking.

That's what I said but, in a different language: Ptychocheilus oregonensis :woot: :roflmao: ;)2

Thanks guys! Never seen one, small or large.
Gator, my Latin is rusty at best, and I had a case of the lazies at time of posting, so I didn't Google

That fishy has several aliases . Squaw fish, hm, not good to say that.
They smoke very well. Vewry difficult to roll. :woot: :roflmao:

Tom, are you talking about smoking squawfish with the intention of consumption? Interesting, we just keep em for laker bait at priest. How do they taste? I'm sure they are greasy enough. Usually can catch a pile of em in the summer with the kiddos.
Thanks
Casey

A Native American told me they're great smoked. Due to many pin-bones, I will freeze, thaw, soak in vinegar, drain & toss that, then do a normal pickle.
I heard soaking in milk will also dissolve bones. The scary part of that is fish milkshake. Wait, too nasty. lol
Maybe a good milk soak/poach/broil. Yeah, That's better.
Do let me know what you try.

I'll have to experiment, I've never thought of eating them but they are easy to catch and plentiful, it would be nice to find a way to make a meal. Would they be close to a whitefish.
-
I've heard between whitefish and trout. Sorta firm.
Say, maybe chowder???

Very nice!

Whoa! I guess they do exist. Here in Co the Endangered species act(pike minnow and razorback sucker) has resulted in the killing of many fish and west slope fisheries in the name of those fish. It's kind of a shame. Not that I dont think they should be protected, being endangered, but it seems they go a little overboard in naming the culprits of their demise, pike and walleyes. As far as I know they reside in the rivers and have had a lot of their holding waters decimated by mankind, therefore they are not doing well in Co, as they dont have favorable waters to live in.
Are you catching them in a lake?

Learn more and jump on the bandwagon. Yeehaw !
Some tagged with a $500.00, well, just check it out.

Squaw fish / pike minnow is one of the boniest fish ever. Pickled or canned is the only way to make it, eatable. Squaw fish make pike look boneless.
Dare you to try and eat one!!

You just never know what tugs!
-
Eating squaw fish ??? I'v tried to cut them up and used them for sturgeon bait, even they want nothing to do with them. Regarding the original post, my wife caught a 5 pounder last year and that thing fought like a tank.
