Title: Erie Ramps
Post by: 08megacab on Feb 21, 2015, 09:17 PM
Is there a list of landings/ramp to hit Erie in Michigan?

What ramp seems to be the best? Are they all a mad house? Any problems with parking/theft?

Is there a map or trail with names to follow out onto the ice?

I just don't want my first trip out be my last.

Thanks

You can park at Breast Bay Marina, used to be $5.  You can then go straight out from there to the walleye grounds.  You will see people out there.

Breast Bay Marina is just north of Monroe between Newport and Nadeau Rds.  I am unsure how far out people are going right now, but it can vary anywhere from a mile to a few miles.

That's the problem for me, is that I don't have ice transportation other than my feet.  A mile, I probably can handle on non-windy days without a crap ton of snow..but we all know that perfect conditions are few and far between.  I would offer guys a few bucks to take me out and back one day!  Would even wear a blindfold  ;D

It could, just depends on if it locks back up by next weekend. Unfortunetly the reason why it is so unsafe is it could change daily or even hourly.  I plan on bringing my lifejacket and a inflateable boat!  ;D ;D ;D

If you guys show up at Crane Creek around 6:00 am to 7:00 am with your own transportation and all gear ready to go there will be many others heading out to the regular areas and it's easy to just follow the crowd out.
Make sure you have a compass for backup and extra batteries or charge systems for phones if you intend on using cells for gps. Very poor cell service on the western basin. Download the Navionics app,  Phones will search for signal a lot and die before the end of the day. Handheld gps is important to have for main navigation. It is very easy to get turned around out there with fog or white outs and once your out there 3 to 6 miles the shore all looks the same so don't think you can pic a landmark and depend on that for guidance. I seen visibility go from 5 miles to 500 feet in ten minutes last weekend when the ice fog hit.
There are other sites you should go to for info on Lake Erie like walleye.com or OhioGamefish.com. There are tons of experienced sportsman on there that offer a wealth of information.
I would recommend you have someone with you that knows the ropes on Erie if this your first time out.
With the warm weather near and south winds there's not much time left for Erie so be extremely careful !

Thank you for the help/info and taking the time to post this. I have the navionics on my phone but it's always a good idea to have a handheld gps. I'll look on the other sites for more info also

Thanks again

You'll kill yourself riding a sled 6 miles out, unless you are going 5 mph, then you'll be off work for a week!!  Recovering!!

Bite was slow for us. We got 4. Out of 2 of us. Lots of lookers on the vex. Just not many takers. Unfortunately 08 megacab (Charles) and i didnt get to meet up. We were back and forth between phone calls. And it was so busy out there it would have been luck to run into each other.  But still had a good time
