Title: picking a spear
Post by: bill540 on Jan 30, 2017, 09:43 PM
I am wanting to get into spearing. I was looking at the spear on walmart.com at https://www.walmart.com/ip/Danielson-Quick-Release-Jumo-Fish-Spear-with-Telescoping-Handle/34769833. I am on a budget so I don't want to drop a lot on a spear. what are your thoughts?

That is to small and light for northern pike. It's similar to the frog spears, but I don't know what type of fish they're intended for, maybe small rough fish in streams or ponds?

I bought probably 5 or 6 spears though the years. I found 9tine here on IceShanty and ordered one a couple of winters ago. I just finally got to put it to work last weekend and that spear puts all the others to shame. All my other spears would plane when I tried anything at any kind of angle. This spear goes right where I want, always! It's not cheap, but it's also the last spear I will buy, unless I get him to make me another one just like it. I spent way more than this one from 9tine, on all those others!

One of them was so far outside I had to put the head under that side and throw. The only thing that limited me was how long I had my rope tied.
