Quick STRIKE RIGS
« on: Oct 24, 2005, 09:33 AM »
Hey guys i was wondering if any of you have tried the quick strike rigs that set the hook when the fish takes it?  And more important if you use these and traps would you say that you get a fish to stay on more or less than if you just let him take the bait and swallow it like on a trap?

Ditto Bluefin.  That's pretty much all I use when pike fishing.

? --for you guys that use them??? ???

Not that it makes a huge difference to me..but, they are also known as 'quick kill rigs?"

Unless your just targeting large fish.

I'm never seen one in action, so, I'm just relaying what's I've been told/read and not sure if  I'd use one based on the fact that a 20" Pike could get he first treble 12" down his gullet and the top treb in the mouth?  Who need to be pulling out two trebs?  One's enough w/some of those monstah mouths...

Or am I not understanding how they work correctly?  I'm all for slaying the Pike, and leaving food for the other critters/birds on the ice, but when we get 30-40flags a day and plenty of fish iced, who needs another treble to get hooked on?

Is there some link or mpeg to show how these work?

You must get to the trap awefully quick! ;D

Are they pretty easy to set up?

Once again, Ditto Bluefin.  The beauty of quick strikes is you can hit 'em a lot sooner, as the name implies.  You don't need to wait for the run to stop and for the fish to swallow the bait.  I wait until the initial "speed run" is over if I get there in time for that.  Then you can pretty much set it right away.  No time for any hook swallowing.  I prefer to set the hook when they are moving away slowly, but I haven't noticed a big drop off in hooking percentage if I set when they aren't moving.  I have a lot of confidence in them and have never gut hooked a fish while using them, to my recollection.  I'm sure it will happen at some point, nothing's perfect.

If regs permit in your state, I'd say quick strikes are the way to go.

the way i understand it the quick strikes are designed to mouth hook the pike before they get the chance to swallow it , thus actually decreasing the mortality rate of released fish. i made and tried them 2 yrs ago and didnt like them. i have better results with one treble hook and a wire leader. there are some threads on quick strike rigs in the northern pike forums of this website. hope this helps

why didn't you like them?  What was your experience?

I think I'd like to try them, if they are easy to use, but, as you said,
we hook a lot of fish w/treb/wire.

I think this year, I'm going to make my own leaders out of  Malin Boa, titanium 'shock' leader.

From what I've read, you can work w/this stuff like you do mono.  No kink wire line....

It's pretty expensive 36$ for a small roll of it..but, hey, it it's as good as they say, won't have to change the wire ever other fish.

Swamp,
Is that wire the same or similar to Tyger wire or Cortland's Toothy Critter wire?  I've used both when fly fishing for pike with good results.  I just posted a question in the Pike Tips forum on whether or not to use these "tieable" wires for building quick strikes.  Have you already tried this or are you going to?

Auger.

Nope have not tried the Malin boa stuff, but, I was cruising another part of this board and I'm pretty sure, ICETROLL was raving about the stuff and this guy has some serious pics to go along w/his posts.  Huge PIKE/Huge Lakers and he swears by the stuff.

I won't be using it on my local trout/salmon waters, but, I'm going to give it a shot when I rig up for Pike.

Hey Capt..
fly guys?  :D Haven't you seen my 'snagging' technique on the P? :o

FISHNIG W/OUT PREJUDICE!    ;D  I'm def. not trying to sound like one of those 'guys' on the FFIM site.. Sorry to call them out, but, I can't even read that board now.  Almost every topic get's smashed to bits by someone who believes 'they are right or are the expert.'   :-\

I'll let the judge upstairs figure that out when the time's right.

i think it was just too much hardware hanging on the end of my line... i think it led to less bites. i tried the malin titanium stuff and did not have very good luck tying knots with it...i had much better luck with  tyger knottable stainless steel i bought at dicks sporting goods and is now what i use for my pike leaders.

THAT'S GREAT TO KNOW...I'd rather not spend excess amounts for something that didn't work well.
