With the notice I just read on the Whitney point site, this is where I will be posting my news from now on. I have a wheeler to get around on the ice. So this is the place I'll be posting my reports.

Out here now the walleye really picked up good as soon as it got dark! We hit about 12 so far nothing big all shorts but action is better then just jerking the rod lol. Maybe the big boys will show up soon
-
Monkeybones that one must be 17 7/8". Nice catch, well I'm also coming out Sunday morning to have some fun with you guys.
Good luck to all.

Yes lots of 17"!!! All nice healthy looking fish.
-
Yes lots of 17"!!! All nice healthy looking fish.
Just think in 2 years we could have a world class walleye fishery SHHHH
I'd like it to remain the dead sea LOL.
-
That's what we are seeing also. Out of 21 eyes caught there this winter 4 were keepers. Had a crappie day yesterday 21 of them.
-
anyone running a wheeler yet?I have a 750 so im always a bit weary at 1st
-
Just got off the lake seen many atvs out there today. I picked away all day many short walleye. I got 14 Nice crappie ,2 preach,5 big bluegill,2 keeper eyes.
-
Had another good day at the Dead Sea with mini Slam. 3 keeper eyes (19, 21, 24") 4 slabs all over 13+, and 3 jumbos. Not big quantities but all quality. Very pleased with catch today. Wind picked up later in day, called it quits and will regroup for tomorrow. Been pleased with fish size this year, but it's been slow otherwise. Not the big number of crappie, but eyes have been bigger than in the past. Putting all those shorts back the last few years is starting to pay off, finally. FYI, it's wheeler safe. Good luck to all. We finally have good ice. ;D

How do I add pics? Sorry for dumb question, I'm cell phone illiterate.

How is the walking, and can you reach walleyes and crappies walking? Or is an ATV the best option?
-
Hows the bite been on whitney? Mainly dawn or dusk, or have you guys been having luck in the daytime as well? Thinking about trying it out this week at some point
-
Hey anybody know where they have mousies?
-
The days I fished there this weekend dusk into the night was most action for me.
Crappy_Bandi I seen mousies In Gander mountain
How did you make out sporty?
-
The bait shop in Whitney Point has mousies. It's on Main Street by rr tracks
-
Walk out is great. Little bit of snow for some traction. We've been getting the biggest crappie we've even caught in that lake. Should make for an interesting crappie derby should we have one.
-
Was out on the ice today with the wife.... only caught this one crappie
(http://i1042.photobucket.com/albums/b430/kc2plj/IMG_1387.jpeg) (http://s1042.photobucket.com/user/kc2plj/media/IMG_1387.jpeg.html)
-
Oh yeah, forgot to mention. Im new here and this was my first time ice fishing! Its a lot of fun. The rest of our gear should be delivered in a week. Shelter, heater, tip ups, sled etc.
-
Congratulations on your 1st ice fishing fish. Now the addiction will start and the bills will pile up on all the gear.
-
Ok thks for info.
-
Pretty good first one...
Welcome to the site...

Congratulations, on a nice Whitney Point crappie, we where there Sunday till about noon, one 18" smallie two potato chip sized crappies, they will grow up to be caught again and 9 10+"crappie for dinner last night.
-
Thanks! I was told by a co-worker that the fish like to hang out in the channel or the pond. I would assume that they like to move about regardless and sometimes like fishing in the spring and summer months you have to prospect.
-
The beer looks good sporty...

Yep, they do move, I never, wait for them, if I don't see fish on my Vex or there to small, or sniffing to much I'm moving. I made 5 moves on Sunday before I found what I was looking for. If I didn't have plans that afternoon I would of stayed to dusk.
-
How did you make out sporty?
I managed 3 big crappie one smallmouth.
After I moved up to your neighborhood, fishing by bigal and slammin I marked allot of fish and had bites but just nibbles they are really light biting.
I had a big mark that was sniffing over and over I lowered the camera and saw it was a big eye I put a shiner on a #14 treble and he grabbed it and wrapped around my camera cord about 10 times and broke my line. Nice day to be out had fun with the wheeler.
-
That's why I stopped using the camera too many fish lost wrapping around it. It's good in scouting and checking out structure under the water.
-
You guys that are catching walleye-what are you using for bait medium shiners, fatheads, or something else? Tip ups or jigging? Thanks for the info.
-
Usually getting them on tip ups. this year only a few on tip ups most on a small spoon with a fathead for me.this yr they seem a little more aggressive to me

Hey guys. I'm looking to try something different and maybe head down to Whitney point with my little brother this week and give it a go. Can anybody point me in the right GENERAL direction before I make the hour and a half drive? Not looking for anyone's coordinates or hot spots!! just looking to get set on the right foot before I make the trip! Thank you
-
Great pics guys and some nice looking fish! Looks like u had a blast your mini!
Snake from what I hear ppl are getting fish here and there could start south work ur way from there or the other way around lol just move around a little bit to find the bite.
-
Nice Pictures! Went out today for a little while and caught a small crappie, better than nothing!
-
A small crappie? I haven't seen one of those yet this year. Only big ones. ;D
-
Nice pics Sammie. Seems like I saw the fish pics last year, but whatever. Looks like you guys had a good time. Should have went with you guys instead, but it was more donuts, lunch meats and bait for us and less wear and tear on my auger :) My crew will be up there in a week or two once I recover from auger "injury" to show you how it's done

Going to come to the point later this week with my 4 wheeler, where do I park and get on the lake?
-
Going to come to the point later this week with my 4 wheeler, where do I park and get on the lake?
There is a road that runs along the lake on the west side. Turn onto Keibel Rd by the Sunoco. There's a couple areas there with access or park at Dorchester Park on the East side and gain access there.
-
Thanks. Anyone with wheelers going beyond the islands? Ice thickness is all I need.
-
We took our 6 x 6 up past there last weekend. There was a crack that opened up about 6 inches. Just below above the s curves.
-
Auger injury huh? Did we make a rookie mistake? Yup, you should have went with us.
Al, cut my hand on the auger blade loading the truck. Forgot to put cover on. 10 stitches in my hand, so I am out for the next 1 to 2 weekends. That loud creeping sound you hear is Sammie opening up his wallet to buy bait and food ;D
-

Is that bait store in town still open? thanks.
-
If you mean WP Preppers, he is open week days at 10, open weekends at 7. Closed Tuesday.
-
Thanks. Anyone with wheelers going beyond the islands? Ice thickness is all I need.
Sunday Just below the islands I had 8" on a tape I ran all the way up to above the islands.
Be careful though, take it slow and read the ice.
-
Went from 4:30pm to 3:00am...one big crappie. Lots of lookers...no takers :-\ arrgggghh
-
That's a heck of a long time for one fish. They just didn't like you did they? >:(
-
It's all about knowing how to work that rod in the hole! ;)
-
Went out from 0830-1030 in the morning (had to go to work at noon :( ) Caught a few crappie and this smallmouth pictured. The smallmouth came up on the vex screen after the jig was about a foot from the bottom at around 20 feet.

-
And the upcoming weather forecast don't look to good.

Ice was good last night but lots of water on top! Going to be warm next couple days.......use your own judgement!

It's 10:30 AM Wednesday and it's currently 32 degrees and snow flurries here in Whitney Point. Doubt we are going to lose any ice with that. ;D ;D

Just look up the lake you will see where people are fishing just don't poke holes right up there butt. Typically your looking for water 10+ feet deep look at the contour map on the DEC website or navionics.
Some target the channel some like the flats and some fish the old pond area.
-
Man I hope the ice holds up to be able to run the quad I'll have the elite 7 wired up to the atv so I can run and gun.
-
;D a few of us are going to invade your lake Tuesday. ;D :icefish: :icefish: :icefish:

How is the perch fishing on Whitney? I've never really fished for crappies and walleye.
-

we've caught a few perch this year. All nice sized ones but not in any big numbers. I wouldn't count on filling up your bucket with them. >:( :(
-
Going to fish the point tomorrow should I bring the four wheeler from what I hear there's 7 inch of ice any resent ice report would be greatly appreciated
-

Last weekend when I was out it was 6 to 7" good ice the was a few wheelers out there. But it's ice just use common sense ice is unpredictable even a foot thick. Be safe !and leave some fish for me ;)
-
Measured 8 and 9 inches most places tried yesterday, but closer to 5 inches near 3 small islands on the west side (I did have my wheeler). All solid ice. There was some spots with an inch of water on top, partially frozen. First time at WP, did not find too many fish, just some perch. Gonna have to try it again.
-
Thank for the info guys I'll check as I go and let ya know tomarrow
-
Unfortunately, Donny David (Top Line Bait) closed. I'd suggest to buy bait before you come into town, as to not waste a dime/time at "Preppers".
Didn't have mousies when I went there last weekend. My buddy also said he was out of minnows on Sunday, lol. ??? ??? ???
Is that bait store in town still open? thanks.
-
Yea sad to see him stop selling bait he always had wide selection of live bait and the most reasonable price I seen anywhere around there.i believe he is still making jigs!
-
One of the nicest dudes you could ever meet, too. Always was more than happy to share information.

Don't shortchange the Prepper guy. I got mousies and spikes from him last week and he didn't expect so many people for minnows over the weekend thus him running out Sunday. He'll bend over backwards trying to keep minnows on hand including sending someone out to go get more when he's running low. When I talked to him last Friday he said he was thinking he'd had enough for the weekend. And his scoop of fatheads is bigger that Top lines were and for less money. We lost one bait shop in this area. Can't afford to lose another. :nono: :nono:
-
I'll let ya know sporty no good ice up here not looking good with temps in the 50s next week for a few days
-
Do they allow 4wheelers on the lake ???
-
Yes
-
Make sure the 4 Wheeler is licensed. I know a guy who got a ticket for no registration.
-
Can anyone give an update on the current conditions? Plan on going Saturday but a little Leary about it with the weather being on the warmer side. Thanks in advance!
-
You should be fine. We only had a few sprinkles Tuesday when they predicted rain and its been cold since. Heard they've been on it this week with wheelers. We had 7" on Sunday. Doubt we lost much. I'll be on it myself over weekend. ;D
-
I will be out there tomarrow I'll post what I see
-
Thank you both! I appreciate it.
-
Iam going tomarrow I will post ice conditions
-
solid 7" at least...slow bite this afternoon
-
Yeah, you have a good point. I'm biased cuz I like Donny a lot, I suppose. Preppers' scoops are only bigger if he isn't out of them, though. ;)

Ice is about 7" near the islands, was out last night. Good enough for a machine. Obviously still use caution as always and have fun!

About 8 or 9 inch in front of park and 7 inch in channel
-

l guess if he didn't give out such large scoops he wouldn't run out. I liked Donnie too. Nice guy. I drove out of my way sometimes. But lately every time me or my friends would go there all he'd do is complain about people not supporting him. A person can only listen to that for so long before they start to go elsewhere. >:(
-
I guess I better bring minnows with me and spikes we went through a few baitshop around here to..
-

If your planning on coming down Tuesday it's best that you bring your bait with you anyways. The Bait shop in Whitney Point is closed Tuesdays.
-
Thanks al I'm gonna try and make it down..I was just thinking about scratching ice season off this yr won't be the first time no biggie to me but its a bummer been along time since no ice for ice fishing..
-
We have lots. Come on down. ;D
-
Why are you on shanty al your supposed to be working lol
-
I agree preppers is great as far as the amount of fat heads in a scoop.. And its also great to have a bait shop close to the rez. But over the last month I've attempted to buy bait there 4 times and all different days of the week.. First time in beginning of January he was out but trying to get more, 2nd time was I got mine but he said getting low, two weeks ago i got the last scoop.. And today I called to see when he opened tomorrow and was told 6am but may or may not have bait left.. Sorry but I will get less bait per scoop and buy it in Binghamton.. Like I said great scoops and nice guy but can't take a chance on not having bait
-
It's Friday 4pm. I just left the bait store. He said he's been swamped with customers today. Three other guys came in for minnows while I was there
I understand your frustration about not having them. But he is new at this and perhaps in time will get it all down and keep things stocked. Top line was around for 20+ years. I'm sure when he started out he stumbled as well.
-
I stopped today also....he is buying as much bait as he can hold in his tanks. He has another cooler that he has to set up so he can hold more bait. Be thankful he is there, I drove from endwell this afternoon just to make sure I had some for tomorrow.......
-
I'll be on the lake first light tomorrow. Mabe run into some you all. Tight lines to everyone.
-
I will be up too.......

Don't forget Newark valley has bait.
-
I'll be there sunday sun up to sun down with the ATV.
-

Yeah I've stopped a couple times while working and have not found him open......I just try and plan ahead!!
-
I will most likely be out Sunday too sporty. Mabe I'll see you there. Don't forget your lunch this time. ;D
-
Was on the lake today. Good ice every where from 7-9 in. Fished manly east shore from pond north. Fished in 10-13 fow. Had camera, saw a lot of fish but only one wanted to bite, perch. Had wheeler so no issues getting around but very little snow on ice and very slippery, where spikes if walking. Good luck this weekend.
-
There is a nice bait shop in Chenango Forks (WAYNER'S). It is about 4 or 5 houses from the tracks on rt79. Phone is 607-204-0428. Good selection and prices.
-

WP Prepper (Steve) and his bait shop is your best deal in town. He will hook you up with so many minnows it'll outlast your receipt date....He is a good man that I highly suggest seeing...I got my moussies, grubs And waxies from....fat heads, medium shiners and xlarge shiners. Just a new shop and he is open to suggestions on what people want, and he usually gets it. But if you don't go, more for me...Al already got 6 minnows, he's good for the season ;D
-
BTW, fished all day, wind really picked up mid morning. Slow bite, but same results.. Quality sized fish, just not great quantity. 13 total minus the shorts and bullhead. Perch are officially being named jumbos this year and the crappies are slabs. Not one needing the measuring stick so far....still only have pics on phone and don't now how to post them....where's Sporty when I need him..only one eye today....will hit it again tomorrow...I think I'll be trolling looking for a new spot...honey hole is getting crowded. Can't believe how good ice is...9" of clear...water is clearest it's been all year as well, could see bait 5' down...and Al could see the ones I was pulling up as well ;). Mini Slam slept in, missed my little partner, but he's in for tomorrow...big Al, I got some of moms homemade chili to bring...follow the smell boys and come over...good luck everyone, tight lines.
-
Your a funny man slammin. :woot: :woot:
-
How do you guys expect the ice to hold up through this week? The temps plus rain are not looking good...I've only been out one time this year but have some time off the following week and didn't want to have to go north. That's my luck!
-
Al sent me a pic of the fish I can post it nice crappie and perch..
-
Was out in the afternoon today. Ice is holding up nice by the way.....a solid and clear 9 inches. We ran into smallmouth, walleye, and a nice size bluegill. Used wax worms on a small jig as well as fatheads on the tip ups. Fished 18 feet of water in the channel. Will be out again tomorrow with the Wife and some more friends.

-
Fished the islands this evening. Nothing at all. Marked fish but no bite
-
3 of us fished the channel across from the park. 11 am till dark. 4 smallmouths and one small walleye. Very slow day. 7 - 9 inches of ice but it is melting.
-
Slow day :( But still another fun one with little slam and big Al. Only managed 4 slabs on beautiful day. Everyone seemed to be packing it in early. Looks like the early ice bite is over. Hope she holds up over the next few days. Ice looked great though, should be fine. After Wednesday its back to cold.

Nice looking fish there!! From all the reports looks like this weekend was slow Fishing all around the lake. I didn't get to make it out there >:( just gotta hope the ice holds good til next weekend!
-
Fished the channel on Saturday from about 7am to noon. Didn't catch many but the handful of gills and crappie we did land were SLABS.
Marking a good amount of fish every time I've been out but they seem pretty lock jawed.
-
yeah, marked alot, but had to work hard to make them bite. Need to get the aqua view out there to see if the lookers are gills.
-
Same here with marking fish. They would come towards the bait on the machine then move away and then back again. Tried aggressive and soft movements and even just letting it sit. Fatheads produced our fish on tip ups but not much on rod. Finicky fish.
-
Thanks for posting the pic Big Guy. One of these days I'll have to learn how to do that. ;D ;D

Capt. Jim, he does have a charter, that's what he does for a living. I'll PM you with details when I get home from work.
I was planning on going down myself for the Daytona 500 but my plans had changed, I have to let Jim know about that too, going to call him tonight.
-
I hope we get colder temps then they are calling for! I couldn't get on today from Dorchester.

Dude, that blows....sorry to hear that. What a bad, bad year. happy to have gotten out when we did. Temps are going to be colder so just hope and check...again, whether its here or Conditions board, thanks for keeping us updated on conditions. If I getta chance after work I'll go check and post...may not be until after 8pm tonight though.
-

Be careful guys i have fished this lake for almost 40 yrs and the shore ice gets pretty iffy when we have a rain event like this week. You are at the whim of the dam operator and the water can rise and fall with out notice.
-
Idk where you tried to access but beatifull 7 inches of glare ice no issue whatsoever accessing from lot.
-
Thanks for the update!
-
Looks like the lake has only fluctuated around a half a foot up or down in the last couple days.....1 in of rain recorded at the dam...

I didn't check in front of park but did see couple shanty's out in front ....i'll be down later with my boys
-
I did a check Friday 3pm at Dorchester park. Any shore water is gone. Walked right on and spudded out 100 yards. Drilled hole and must be 7+". She's good to go folks.

Went out around noon today. Four of us fished the channel with ice at around 5-6 inches estimated. Marked some fish and had some smallmouth slam a tip up however a slow day followed into the afternoon. The walk out to the channel from Dorchester was fine (cleats!!). And this unfortunate event followed:
http://www.wbng.com/news/local/Man-rescued-from-Whitney-Point-Lake-367924891.html
Mild hypothermia after being in the drink for about 30 minutes. Glad he is ok!
-
That guy went by me while I was fishing north of the islands. Saw him headed way up towards Upper Lisle and was thinking he's going to hit thin ice if he didn't turn around. There was another boat with him and when I started hearing sirens I figured it wasn't good. Could see the emergency vehicle lights up near the bridge. After an hour and half or so one boat came back down. Glad he is OK.
-
We plan on heading up that way tomorrow morning. How has the fishing been up that way? Was it me or did the water seem cloudy and merky today.
-
The fishing there was lousey for me today. I thought the water wasn't as clear as it was last week.
-
I was wondering what all the sirens were for, thank god he is ok. Boy was the ice making ice today, loud as hell! We fished out of Dorchester from 6am till like 2pm. 2 of us and we ended up with 1 monster gill and 2 huge perch( biggest I had ever seen there)
-
Me and a buddy were also out about 6:00 to 2:00. Cloudy water and didn't pull up any fish. Still a nice day to be out on the ice. Definitely bring cleats if you go Sunday.
-
Unless the plans change I'll be back tomorrow. After the luck I had today I don't have any idea where to go. The fish have been evading me for a couple outings now. :(
-
It was frustrating! Seeing them streak up on the flasher and then turn around like I was offering them spam instead of steak. Maybe the rain and murky water had some play in the foul luck.....
-
hello thinking of comng east to fish 2hrs ride read some of the post did not here of what u mainly get iam liken perch and eyes and access. thank you,
-
other than yesterday I have been doin really well on the pond 16fow. been getting a 4 or 5 big gills and 4 to8 big crappie each trip. Honestly the best year I've had there . Almost gave up on the dead sea lol
-
Yes the dead Sea comes alive once in a while. Wasn't my weekend though. I got skunked both days. :(
-

The dirty water is hurting us....Got a few today......drilled a lot of holes to find fish that would bite. Lake is still dropping, cracking along the east shore was pretty intense!!! :o
-
Our crew drove right past Whitney point lake and headed north to Papish pond. The decision to try our luck here paid off with some steady fishing. We set up shop on the noisy 6 inch ice this morning and had a busy morning chasing tip ups. Pickerel dominated the day with a few nice size ones. A few small perch and one gill were landed as well. This small body of water is what we needed to get some confidence back and the rod to bend not to mention see fish on our machines! Will be back on the point again soon I'm sure. A link below to the NYSDEC website on papish pond provided below.

Thanks guys, going to be able to come up later this week, so it should be ok.

The channel has 7" plus wherever I drilled over the weekend. The north end where river comes in is open. That's where the ice boater fell thru on Saturday.
-

Ahhh that sucks! Did the same exact thing a few seasons ago. I always keep it on a lanyard now!

to make it even better i have a case that holds my id and card :(

Lol, sorry to laugh at your misfortune, my friend. At least you'll have a good story to tell! Trust me on this.
-
The only thing worse than actually ice fishing Whitney Point, would be dropping anything worth more than ten cents down the hole. lol - I would rather pick rotten fruit with my X wife's parents. Good luck fellas!
-
you my friend were fishing the wrong spot, i was there 30 minutes and had a 20" walleye, 12" crappie, 12" perch and numerous small mouths, great fishing morning until "the incident"
-
Everyone wants to land on the mother load of fish everytime. Gotta work for them fish in there sometimes. Lots of nice fish in there just gotta find where they are.
-

No, not really. I used to fish Ice fish WP with a passion. Something changed, something is off. Something aint right. It's been that way going on a dozen years. I know LOTS of guys who won't go near it..Can you find fish? Yes, I am sure. And good for you guys who put the time in and find them. I have been driving to the ADK's for trout, Salmon and lakers this winter. It's something new and different and at times frustrating. But I love it
-
Did you lose that I phone this morning? I'm out there now. Good 6-8" but no fish as usual for me...I know a Coue of you guys do well here but I haven't figured it out and have put some serious time in
-

There was also open water near the east shore just north of the islands.... about 60 yards from shore. I didn't go close enough to see if it was a series of gas holes or a large crack. I was on about 5 in of ice over there.
Be careful if we get snow covering the ice.

How is the ice holding up on the lake? Has the fishing picked up at all?
-
I'll let you know, checking after work today. Everything I've heard has been good, but be careful. I took the weekend off from hitting the ice went after the eyes on the river and limited out....also slammed some big perch...that's some of my favorite fishing ( winter river floats) for eyes...but I'll be back out on the hard stuff Friday...take a cold Sat/ maybe Sunday off and hit her again Mon. Just had to refill the freezer with filets, been given away the ice crappies ;)
-
I'm having some ice crappies for dinner tonight. ;D ;D

Slamminsam stop giving your crappies to bigal.. :woot: :woot: :woot:

Going to be coming down Friday with my wheeler, any problems with the ice? Will stay away from north of the islands, heard that's not great. Any other issues?
-
The shoreline was soft on tuesday and the cracks and soft spots are snow covered...it was 50-60 with rain and a river running in last week so you might vwant to give it the weekend unless you know the res well
-
Thanks for the reply. I think I'll come down without the wheeler and look around first. Then if it's OK come back next week to ride around.
-

I fished the lake two days last weekend. One day way north of the islands. Every where I drilled I got 7" of good ice. I live and work in Whitney Point and can tell you that we didn't have the weather to lose any of that ice during this past week. I saw a Wheeler driving all over around the islands last Sunday. With this cold we're having I'm sure it will add more to that 7". If I used a Wheeler I'd have it on the lake this weekend. ;D
-
We fished in the upper end above the islands also last week after the rain. No problems accessing ice and ice was slick with 7 to 8 inches. The rain didn't hurt it at all like some people think, seems like some are new to ice fishing or dont know what they are talking about. The ice there has been the best in the area. Yea the part where the river dumps in is open of course as usual.
-
Planning on fishing Saturday......lets hope the water is a little clearer!!
-
Dress warm guys! And keep the heaters going in them shanty 20 Mph winds chills sat and Sunday gonna feel like -25. Won't need to ice the beer

might need to keep them near the heater, otherwise, beer slushies!
-
Not many braved the weather today!! You didn't miss too much!! LOL Pretty slow but had the heaton!!
-
Has anyone fished the channel on the RTE 26 side before it coils over to the dirt road? Years ago we used to do pretty well over there. It's a long walk
-
I've been there several times this year. Started out pretty good but slowed waaay down. :'(
-
WP is a tough lake! That should be about 20' over there is I remember. Maybe Ill try it this week. Thanks
-
Yes gets even tougher later in the ice season. I will get to make it back out there later this week.
-
WP is a tough lake! That should be about 20' over there is I remember. Maybe Ill try it this week. Thanks
we've had our best luck in the 16-17' range. There's 20fow up there but the bit shallower water worked for us. I even got a couple walleye suspended 6-7' off the bottom.
-
Last week was really tough with the water so cloudy, couldn't find hardly anything on the pond. Was on the pond this afternoon, got a few gills and a few small crappie in 16fow. Water is clearing up. Marking a lot of fish , just not biting like 2 weeks ago. But at least marking them again! 9 inches of ice and building all day
-
Anyone got any info how's the lake looking after yesterday storm? Wanted to head out Friday
-
Has anyone gone bye Dorchester to see if we can still get on the ice? Don't want to drive down there today if not.
-
I'll take a look after work today. Will report later. ;D ;D
-

Another inch of rain.......can't catch a break with the dirty water!! The lake is up just over 1 foot since yesterday. Let us know what you see BigAl
-
I went to the park and as I suspected the lake is up. Some minor flooding in the park. Ice looks good with no water on top but water along the edges. The spillway is dumping out pretty good so hopefully that will help lower things back down. Only time will tell if it will be fishable this weekend. ???
-
just got back from wp, kiebel road is blocked off with barricades
-
Thanks for the reports guys!!!!

Anyone one been out on the lake ? How's the ice holding up?

How's the ice? I'm assuming you were able to get to it from park side. Looks like it's going to be another eye hunt on the river if ice isn't safe to reach.
-
Hit the back end shore line was not good. where the water line came up was all bad Ice good thing had on the good boots water still up under the bad ice. Water was really bad and muddy just turned around and left. Went over to long pond and played with the pan fish all day some really big bass too.

was out on whitney tonight and the ice was great, water was not. Hows the ice and water on long pond monkeyyboness?
-
11 to 12" water was clean lots of action all day at long pond. Yea the ice is good once u get past the shoreline in the back too. but once I seen how muddy that water was I wasn't sticking around did you get anything out there?
-
wife jigged out a dink eye and that was it. So not to high jack the whitney thread i'm going to pm you a couple questions

Was out literally all day yesterday. Stay away from anywhere near the channel, it's still brackish. The pond side however is a lot more clear, caught some good fish to include my personal best walleye.

Nice fish! Good looking healthy fish nice to see some starting to getting the golden color too them instead of the dual silver lol.
-
Thanks and thanks for info on lp. Caught tons of bass and no keepers on what was in season. So I figured i'd roll the dice on whitney and it paid off.

Has anyone stopped to look at the conditions? Did the run off destroy the shoreline?

Do you guys think Long or Round held up?

Do you guys think Long or Round held up?
I worked out of town all week......going to drive around tomorrow and see!!

Might check Long here in a few - will report back later if I do

Shoreline flooded about 10 ft at parking area. Boat ramp area flooded. Have to cross about 10 ft of open water to get on ice.
-
The ice is nice and tight once you get on it. 8" anyways, good hard ice
-

so are you saying that you got on the ice today?
-
Yes Al - Long Pond is fine where I was. I forgot how well that place keeps its ice through warm-ups. "8-9" every hole
-
Well that could give me a place to fish this weekend. Thought I wouldn't be able to find ice. Mabe it will hold up for Seebers derby next Saturday. How were the edges?
-
Walked on the ice today. Didn't drill but it looked good to me. Kiebel Rd is open...last chances this week/weekend probably.
-
anyone go out?
-
just got off, went on at dorchester with no problem, good clear ice varying from 6.5-9.5 in spots. Slow bite though, a lot of lookers.
-
Whitney Point Preppers has gone out of business. We no longer have a bait store in town. Going to suck for hard water season. >:( >:( >:(

I thought he did decent business there?? I always liked the minnows and if I was in a bind for gear the prices weren't absurd

I wonder how the back side is at the end of Kieble rd
Depending on the spot you are almost directly walking on tha channel, haven't seen many reports from that side but guys "were" out before the rain. I'd be a little weary...rain, early ice, and a current aren't a good mix
-
I was on the channel on Saturday. Was around 5" across from the park. ;D

Wow...of all the people out there yesterday not one post?
That pretty much sums up the fishing :-\
All day and caught three short eyes(very short) and one perch.
Fished north of islands 4.5" 12 fow, moved to park late in day, same for ice, 20 fow.
Not a good day, res is living up to its reputation!

Yeah they've been tight lipped, been there twice this year marked fish from the time I started and quit both times! Getting them to hit is a mystery to me at this point I've tried a bunch of different jigs, techniques etc. I can drop to bottom and watch them follow it right up on my marcum then they just stare at it and eventually move off...only to repeat the pattern 30 seconds later. Then occasionally one will hit...been tough
-
i post under reports and conditions, i'd check there if you want input. Rarely do I check this portion. The walleye will be off the hook in 5-10 years. Caught 5 today but 30 plus a week ago, all shorts.
-
I had a ton of lookers. Would follow the bait if I raised it then would go back down. Think I found out what they were. Twice when I brought up the line I had a 2" baby crappie (?) on it. Never even felt a tug. :( :(
-
We had similar luck North of the Islands. A lot of lookers following the jig. Between the group of three of us we managed to catch 15 gills and a couple short crappies.
-
Any size to the gills? I got my biggest one ever out of there Saturday. ;D ;D
-
They all averaged around 8-9", with a couple real nice ones mixed in.
-
not bad. Now we just need to find those crappies. :woot: :woot:
-
I found them this weekend with my 2 kids ;D we brought home 117 between both days n managed to find one legal eye for the bucket ;D...Deff had to do some digging in the magic box to get them feeding :icefish:
-
Nice job Slayer. Couple nice meals there huh? ;D
-
Absolutely a bunch fine dining came from that bucket full
-
Keep your bucket away from bigal slayer he will be trying to catch your fish in the bucket ::) ::)
-

Yea but they taste just as good. ;)2 ;)2
-
How much snow did you guys get down there??
-
Less than an inch ;D ;D
-
Anybody know the date of the crappie derby? Thanks in advance.
-
February 18th. Free fishing weekend on NYS. No licence needed. ;D
-
Bigal will be easy to find out there during the crappie derby there will be a line of guys waiting to fish his holes...

Man... Quit raining >:( >:( >:( I wanted to go for a nite bite tomorrow hows the ice holding up?
-
Went up to Whitney point today. A lot of water at the shore line. Not a good
-
shore line was good on Monday. No problems getting on. There even was a few wheelers out there. ;D ;D
-
How is the ice on the lake will they have the crappie derbie?
-
Lake ice off the park was 9 or so inches. They require 12" for derby to happen. This week's forecast isn't very promising. I really doubt they are going to have the ice they need to have it. >:( >:(

gotta think positive.
-
Trust me. I'm thinking positive. But the reality is there just may not be the time to make the required thickness based on current forecasts. They usually make the call a week prior to the date.
-
Eh, derby smerby - The ice will be fine for the guys who fish it all of the other days :)
-
I always like making a trip down that way a few times a season
-
I'd love to come and fish the derby at WP, but wait, once again it's on the same day as the Chenango lake derby. I know that Chenango had to postpone, but wish they could of done 3 weeks so not to conflict.
-
I've done the perch derby a few times. They charge $5 to enter and the prizes aren't all that great compared to the prizes at the crappie derby that only costs $2 to enter. ??? ???
-
Tuscarora is the 18th too. Gezzzzz......... :( I think they're all good derbies, just can't be in 3 places at once.
-
I heard they require 12" of ice for the perch derby as well. Anyone know if this is true?
-
Yes they need 12" for the green light. Chenango Lake is at 10" as of last Saturday.
-
makes you wonder is they will have either derbies this year. >:( >:(
-
as of 2/1 there is 8 In on the pond and 7 in on the channel. This from the Crappie Derby website........gonna need some colder weather fast!
-
Hey bigal go out there and jump on the ice if you don't go through the derby is on    :roflmao:

Derby is canceled >:(
-
It's the best thing for the lake you would think eventually the fishing would get better but nothing seams to change
-
Hey sporty. It's been 2 years since last crappie derby. And now it's cancelled for another year. Mabe we need to start up another one of those ice shanty get together. ;D
-

I'd be into that. :icefish:
-
We've done that on a year where the perch derby was cancelled. "The NO derby" derby.
-
Here in Whitney Point we'd have more "no derby derbies" than crappie derbies. ;D ;D ;D
-

Already in the works I have a bunch interested already.
We will be there at 6AM If anyone wants to join let me know I will PM you with details.
-
Same day? 18th?
-
I'm game for that!
-
Same day? 18th?
Ya
-
sounds good. Who's up for the challenge?
-
The last "get together" was a blast. Just a quick question to all dead sea fisherman this season....I thought last year the ice fishing was as good as it ever had been for years....quality and at times, good quantity. I haven't fished it enough this season to really compare...but from what I have done this season there and all reports I'm hearing...it's down right terrible! I had a couple people getting them (crappie/ keepers) at night, but has anyone landed a keeper eye this year? I haven't seen one! At least no pics...lotta possible fish stories ::) ::)
-
Keeper walleye? Where's the keeper crappie? Few and far between. :-\ :-\
-
I have it on good authority that there's an organized group of "fisherman" in the region who are going from lake to lake and wiping out the fisheries. It's pretty sick what a little research, GPS, and modern technology can do. You find the right spots and have the right gear and no morals, you can totally clean out a lake or pond. The DEC is aware, they just haven't caught up to them just yet. Please use the tip line whenever you witness overharvesting, wanton waste and littering. It's a real shame what's become of our sport...Whitney Point is one of the lakes they have been targeting (open water as well)
-
A couple years back if I caught a 20+" eye, I was excited and kept it. Now, I've learned so much from guys about "breeders" and fish management, that I've let those bigger ones go. It's not easy, but necessary. Last week, my biggest eye was over 22" and she went back (river fishing) to help keep the strain going. Those who over harvest, keep shorts, and pile up trophies just to show what they did are hurting all of us in the long run. Only good news is that WP res has a lot of real small eyes in her now showing that there is a reproduction process started. I'm thinking a lot of out of town visitors don't care about our res and have hammered it pretty hard over the last few years. Could be wrong though. Be careful what you post.... People flock to info 😏
-
Amen Sam...We are on the same page

If this is true I hope they get caught very soon that's terrible and pisses me off

I think I seen the boogyman
-
I have to call BS on the fishing a place out theory - So when you watch 900 fish ignore your offering on the VEX you think there is some guy who can catch 800 of them? Not a chance. There is no bite hot enough (especially at WP) to clean a place out. You would have to be there all day and all night, all winter.... Just not happening. Other factors may come into play, but being wiped out by world class fisherman aint one of them
-
It's not B's bud...With the increase in pressure, especially on smaller bodies of water, it is possible and easy at times to hammer the quality breeding classes if fish. Ever been on a hot prespawn bite for bass or crappie. I have, and I'm not a very good angler. If you didn't obey the laws you could easily walk away with 100s ...That IS happening. Theres no debate. There's a reason that so many of the reports these days are talking about dink fish on so many of our lakes and ponds. A select but of unethical, immoral folks are crushing these fisheries, and far to few understand basic ecology...
-

Eh....Maybe a farm pond. Not on 1,773 acres.

What are the current conditions on whitney point regarding snow/slush on the ice

How is the snow/slush situation out there

Not bad at all,Ice is turning white about 7 " where I am now

You near the islands or the pond

They are everywhere plannin to be there tomorrow near the farther island just tryin to figure out what to expect especially with a bunch more snow forecasted tomorrow

Right now the walking isn't bad at all no slush about 3" of snow in most spots

I got to agree with you on this one 100% my "opinion" it's easier to blame the phantom unethical non sporting bad guys then to simply admit you can't catch a cold in a rain storm much less a bunch of fish ...which I remind you are one step above weeds on the evolutionary scale.....there is no mystery group of guys going around with a gps and vexlar taking your fish .....you just need to fish a bit more ....my advice stop making excuses and looking for phantom bad guys, your time could be spent much better learning new and better techniques
-
I've been on this site long enough to see a pattern here. ANYTIME the topic of of overharvesting and the impact it has on our fisheries comes up, Trapper, the president of the flat earth society, is all over whoever posts. Attacking their intelligence, their fishing ability, and anything else he can come up with. Keep your head in that warm comfortable sand buddy. Do you honestly believe humans don't know t the environment or our resources? I have kids and I'm concerned about the future. I'm not wearing a tin foil hat and making up conspiracies. This cautionary post came from actual knowledge and facts, and the concern is based on basic science. Guilty conscious dude?

wait a minute .........
your quote.... there's an organized group of "fisherman" in the region who are going from lake to lake and wiping out the fisheries. do you honestly believe that ? then prove it list the sources and DEC officers that are working on this ..... because region 7 sure knows nothing about it.....
further more there are those that swear that they had encounters with bigfoot UFOs or a shooter on the grass knoll ,I don't believe in them either ...........
-
They must be reallyyyyyyyy good fisherman can someone get me there spot and pm GPS coordinates that has to be a good bite!
-
The highly organized group of anglers aren't showing at WP this year. The derby was cancelled. Just the ring leaders are having a meeting. :woot:
-
M-bones, I think I walked past you yesterday evening , trying the evening/ night bite. Did ok on the crappie not the eyes though. Little Slam caught a few absolute slabs... One 15" pig. But not big numbers of them though. Perfect conditions last night. Had fun. Res certainly has been an adventure this year. Wish I brought 4 wheeler, but shore ice was little sketchy and slushy. Good luck all.
-
Yea you probably did I was after them eyes I didn't mess with the crappie yesterday. It was slow most of the day, but did well in the end biggest was 28" she went back.
-
Just wondering if jigging raps r the go too jigs those eyes I've been there several times this year and only got a handful of eyes about 6" no crappies and two perch the hardest lake I've ever fished and pointers would be greatly appreciated not looking to keep them just some pics and good times
-

Good size eye!!! Congrats! Share pics if you got any. Happy to hear she went back in. Hopefully you got some other eaters. It seems it's either big or small and tough to get a limit of 18"-21". But you got a nice one, congrats again!!

are walleyes stocked on whitney every year?

Any one interested in the meeting we will be starting on the old pond area at 6am.

Fished the lake Monday. You guys must have caught them all Saturday Sporty because all I got were the dinks. And for whom ever left the 2 empty propane bottles on the ice, not to worry. I picked them up for you. :nono: :nono:
-
Had to bring this thread back! Has anyone heard a date for the crappie derby yet? Seems like they normally have the website updated and a date set by now, I guess I could be wrong though!
-
They used to have crappie derby last Saturday in January but announced last year they were moving it into mid February from now on. Guess they are hoping that ice will be better then.
-
Haven't heard if they have dates yet......saw a couple out yesterday.....might be fishing by Christmas!!
-
Stay off the ice bigal your to old to swim in ice cubes.....hey sporty you out and about yet how ya been...

Anybody using bigger shiners to find the eyes and getting luck? I used fatheads and pulled two keepers and about 9 shorts but curious if I upped the size of bait to find more keepers...

You'll never find Big Guy on Whitney Point lake. He likes fishing for dink gills. Not walleye. :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

Starting to see why this place is called the dead sea. Almost non-existent bite so far this afternoon. Here fishy fishy...
-
After all the rain they have alot foid to eat rite now..my buddy was on otisco very slow bite also very slow
-
I beg to differ. Do the work and learn the lake. Get the presentation right and you will have a different opinion
-
Starting to see why this place is called the dead sea. Almost non-existent bite so far this afternoon. Here fishy fishy...
I never really killed the fish there ....lot of small walleyes
-
Lot of bigger walleye too Trapper.
-
I know what's in there!!!! Just gotta do your homework and use the conditions to time it right n u can catch more fish than u can keep up with on one rod!!! It's not a beginners lake for limits!!!!
-
Where would be a good spot for walleye this is my first time ever ice fishing this lake.
-
Where would be a good spot for walleye this is my first time ever ice fishing this lake.
Pick a spot, any spot!
Fishing might be a bit subpar until the water clears. It was quite murky last night.
Riding my sled down the ice hill at the park was quite fun, though.
-
i guess they got some short crappies and walleyes in this res. and it is the only new york waters stocked with alligators

Is there parking on keibel Rd
-
Is there a size limit on augers? i heard there may be a 10 inch max but i wasn't sure if it was a legitimate rule
-
never been a size restriction but mt question to you .....why would you need a bigger hole???? a 10 inch hole is the same circunfirance as a man with a 32 inch waste
-
Good point...been fishing with 6 for years. Easy to carry, drill and have been able to land plenty of big fish. No need for anything bigger than 8 IMO...
-
I use a 6 inch auger but I was walking around 12 inch holes on Friday
-
Its from the water run off from the rain and melting snow....
It can make a 6" hole pretty big in no time....... ;)
-
Went out yesterday and fished most of the day. Water is very cloudy with little fish activity. A couple dink walleye over the pond.
-
Since the dead sea is on shut down, attempted to fish park station today, but they are currently closed to ice fishing.
-
Ended up going to Waverly reservoir, caught 1 jack perch.
-
Is there parking on keibel Rd
Plenty of room to park if you have 4wd. It's usually not plowed.
-
As of Wednesday the gate to back road was closed so there isn't much area to park until they open the gate to the road.

Can you get around it with a ATV ?
-
I would guess that you can Sporty. The snow machines are. Not too much parking area outside the gate. Couple driveways right there. :-\ :-\

Thanks Randy

How's the fishing been.
-
How is ice?

Wow, looks like the WP fish aren't the only ones with lockjaw! Anybody make it out lately?
-
Wow, looks like the WP fish aren't the only ones with lockjaw! Anybody make it out lately?
Lol I haven't heard of a decent Crappie bite yet this year. Looks like a Perch and walleye game. I've only been once.
-
Ya, seems to be. I was referring to the WP fishermen though. Pretty tight lipped this weekend. Lol
-
Is the gate open yet? Looking to get out this weekend
-
Gate was closed yesterday. Evening bite was ok until 8 pm, then headed home. Haven't found good crappie bite yet. I'll check gate tomorrow.
-
With temps in the 40s n 50s for a little over a week im thinking no derby again this yr...
-
Signs were up today, Feb 17th if we're lucky
-
I hope so im looking forward to fishing it..its alot a fun..
-
I'm just hoping the shore ice holds up by the gate so I can get my wife out Thursday morning for her first walleye
-
certainly not making ice, but not losing a lot. Yesterday there were guys out with snow mobiles on ice. I checked and gate was closed still. I'll check again today....I like checking because it gives me the excuse to go jig for 2 hours after work. Caught 3 crappie yesterday from 3:45-5...all shorts though.
-
I wouldn't worry as much about losing ice as I would about the ice floating as the water comes up and losing the shore ice like we did a couple weeks ago. Water is going to be all stirred up again too :'(
-
New bait shop is now open near the lake. David's bait Shop in Upper Lisle. Open daily 6AM- 6 PM. ;D ;D
-
Hemlock Hill rd
-
Forgot to add the road name. Thanks Drewski.
-
You got it ,more important ,.......BAIT...DD.... ;D ;D ;D
-
How’s the water clarity been?
-
Buddy was there today and said he could.see the jig way down the hole
-
By chance did your buddy say how the ice was after all the rain
-
Anyone know when they plan on opening the gate up?
-
Wow, awfully quiet on here! Anyone get out this weekend? I bit the bullet and joined the Sodus crowd today
-
Was there Saturday few shorts some other guys caught nice eyes
-
I got out both days of weekend. Had pretty good luck both days. Got some nice walleye and even got my first keeper crappie of season. Was wondering if I'd ever get one of those this year. ;D
-
Awesome! Nice work. Sorry to hear about the shorts DB1... at least you were catching!
-
Yes sir fishy fishy better to catch than nothing at all

This one made it worth dealing with the wind on Saturday afternoon. It's my second crappie over 16 inches this season.
-
That's a real beauty Coach... nice job!!
-
Was out on the pond from 7-11 yesterday. Had 12 flags, iced 10. Mostly dink eyes but a few just under 18”. No keepers. Was a gorgeous morning, though!
-
I’ve never fished at Whitney. What gate are you talking about?
-
There's a gate at end of Keible road for the dirt road that runs along West side of lake. It's controlled by the Army Corps. They usually close it when reservoir level goes up. It's never usually closed for this long until now.

Wow that's a slammer slab for the Point. That's the one you want to pull up at the crappie derby!!
-
Nice one!!!!
-
Gotta agree, thats a nice slab. Just haven't seen the big number of crappie this season. One pig for every 20 dinks....and those are even far and few between. Someone told me today they think the crappie population was effected by water flooding and wash out last year or couple years ago effecting the "herd". I don't know about that...I just know last year and year before that we've done much, much better than this year. I guess we just gotta keep searching for them. BTW....come on man...OPEN THE GATE!!
-

Thinking back to the late 70's and 80's when the crappie population was at it's peak there were few walleyes, more bass and the occasional big pike. I think right now the booming walleye population is what's keeping the crappie population down from what it could be. Lowering the size limit on the walleye to 15" might really help the crappies IMO.
-
Kind of hope they don't open the gate if people keep leaving junk on the ice. Picked up several beer cans and the portions of a lantern box that weren't frozen in the ice. It was from a group that fished in front of the beach area last night. At least most of the junk will be confined the Dorchester area.
-
Wayners Bait Shop sells mousies
-
Fished the point today managed 21 gills 2 short eyes 2 small crappie and 2 bass one of them being nice ice is in great shape and the ice was really talking today

Nice work. Hope you got some keepers out of this batch!
-
Crappie Tourney still on? Hope so, always wanted to try it out.
-
Sign is still up Feb 17th weather looks good for it.....DD.... ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm guessing they will require another inch or two before they decide to hold the derby. County requires at least 12" and they must use a different tape measure than most people do. They never record what other people measure. :%$#!:
-
I may be wrong ,God knows I'm half blind ,but isn't that a black crappie?
-
I may be wrong ,God knows I'm half blind ,but isn't that a black crappie?
I believe it is. By the time I got it home it had even more black showing on the scales. Last year my buds and I caught quite a few black crappies up at the North end. But as the derby organizers say "There are no black crappies in this impoundment" ;D
-
I fished it years ago and didn't catch a black was all whites , but hey things change and people toss things in ... nice fish anyways ....sparks my interest that big black crappies are being caught there ...very nice fish
-
I may be wrong ,God knows I'm half blind ,but isn't that a black crappie?
DEC added black crappie to the species list at the Reservoir, so it’s possible.
Curious if they’ll allow black and white crappies to be entered at the derby now. It’s gonna be a pretty crappy if not...
Sorry for the awful pun
-
There are quite a few black crappies in the point. Not uncommon at all the last few years to catch them.
-

Oh yeah, I know. But it hasn’t been until now that they’ve recognized that the black crappie are there.
-
must be a few bob theres a picture of you with one you caught :roflmao:
-

I’m pretty sure that’s a white. Some of them can make you think twice, could possibly be a hybrid but any of the black crappie I’ve ever seen show a pattern on the side that extends way further than that one. Either way that’s a pig!
-

nope I zoomed in on the picture that fish has 7 dorsal spines clear as day plus irregular spots that's a black crappie sure as the sun will set tonight .... great picture makes identification a breeze ...and that's a great fish

positively a black. beautiful fish

Good chart Trapper, and great fish coach!
The fish that I've caught at WP do seem to be a lighter color? Wonder why? This is a black from my pond.

You got me trapper, that is a black....dorsal fins tell the tale.
On a side note that might pass the inspection during the derby....just a really light colored one pretty cool!

I’ve always noticed that every fish from here is lighter, not sure why. Walleyes are very silvery, perch are light (almost like a blue perch) and the gills can be very light colored as well...you go into the spillway and the eyes are the color you’d expect
-
Gotta love how DEC just recently acknowledged that they are in there, but they have managed to get that big- apparently undetected! They were faster to admit the gator infestation!! Don't worry though, there are still no mountain lions in the area ::) ::) ::)
-
Only legal crappie I've taken off pond this year are blacks.......all the whites I've gotten there are that 8 inch year class....lots of them.....gonna be a bumper crop next year.....but I've gotten 2 blacks in the 10 to 11 inch range.......cruzing in the schools of gills we've been in to.....glad to see but not surprised. They r there.
-
So what is this one? Looks like a white to me, but the stripes aren't very defined. One of the 8 inch class fish I got a few weeks ago. Was 1/4 inch shy of a keeper. First crappie I've ever caught because I usually don't fish crappie waters or target them
(https://s9.postimg.cc/owaqcinvf/20180115_134939.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/owaqcinvf/)
-
That one is tough.........I would call it a black due to the fin spotting........but those vertical bars on the side of the body look like a white...........I can tell you mine were no doubt blacks.........but that one is open for opinion that's for sure. Can I get points if I call it a hybrid :)
-

Judging by my newly acquired skills, I’d say that’s a white based on the striping haha I’ll probably be wrong though! Counting the dorsal fins is new to me though...I’m sure next time I’m out I’ll be looking
-
you are both correct that is a white crappie ......mistertwister you are now a expert at crappie identification....now for the hard part .... the taste test
-
Ya, I saw features of each also. That's why I wasn't sure. Hybrid works for me. Black crappie + white crappie = GRAY CRAPPIE!! ;) ;D
-
The master has spoken. White it is. It tasted a quarter inch too short :-\
-
it is a White crappie... according to New York State Freshwater Fishing guide 2017/2018 photo and comparison of Back and white crappie on page 58. They note that white crappie coloration can be similar to black crappie. So best to ID them by comparing distance from the eye to the dorsal fin with the length of dorsal fin base. That length is about the same in Black crappie,.... but the fin base length is significantly shorter than the distance from the eye to the front of dorsal fin in a white crappie.
Black crappie have 7 or 8 dorsal spines....
Interesting that a white crappie usually has 6 , but in some rare cases can have 7 dorsal spines according to NYS DEC.
Darn...grey crappie works for me lol
The big one looks like it is a white too... but it is hard to see exactly where the base of the dorsal fin ends near his thumb , but it does appear to be shorter length than the distance from eye to front of fin.
-
Just when I thought school was out! Love it! Stay tuned! @)

It's because the stained/merky water. Goodyear lake is the same way . Blue walleyes we always said. Catch an occasional "blue" at the spillway.the fish tend to get darker when spawning time approaches

Shot out from Dorchester after work yesterday and sat on a bucket for about an hour and a half. Not a single mark. I froze. Time to get the ESKIMO EVO-1 back in the car for some comfortable (warm) weekend fishing
-
Good luck to you this weekend mono, and would you get to that farm pond already! lol ;D
-
Fished Whitney point for the first time in years. Two undersize crappie, dink walleye and one about 15 inches. Sure has changed from the days when Crappie were constant action. All hit Marmooska tipped with mousey.
-
Was slower today.....moved around, 15 gills, 1 big perch, 5 short crappie released and 8 smallmouth, they were fun.........no eyes for me, not even a short.......all on spikes

Crappies have been hard to come by this year...actually the last couple years. The eyes have been around though, I caught a dozen on Thursday, 8 of them being 15-17” but no keepers.
-
Should be a good crop of eyes next year. Seem to be lots in the 15 - 17 & 7/8 inch class

Yep the eyes are eating the hell out of the panfish. I'm so sick of catching 15,16&17 inch walleye.
-
Al whats for breakfast..gonna a good sandwich before i start hauling in all those fish.....
-
What is the prize for biggest walleye ? Is it worth killing a 24 inch plus eye for it.
several years ago at guy had biggest walleye at 28" and got several hundred dollars. So the answer to your question is yes. 😁
-

[/quotes thanks big guy. Maybe I'll just have the better half me drive down and have a look anyways. Hope you do well 👍
-
yes walleyes are good eats but there is no need to rape a lake of its breeders . Responsible selective harvest ensures the future of a lake for our children and other people. Take a good one for the wall or a tournament that's okay but take breeders regularly just to chop up and eat not ethical or responsible.
...during the derby they announce how big the leading walleye is so its not like there killing all the breeders..
-
The18inch limit is so theare old enough to spawn was talking to the fisheries biologist last week about this for the. Amount of 17 inch walleyes full off eggs a couple 22s or bigger wouldnt hurt imo
-
Thanks big guy. Maybe I'll have the better half drive me down for something to do. Looks like the weather is gonna be awesome.

Are registration checks common in this day Big Al?

Can't say for sure as I don't own any machine but I've heard they are on Dorchester. ???

Has anyone been out recently? Just curious how walking conditions will be. Fished a different lake Saturday and it was getting slushy.

We fished Saturday and Sunday, and it was getting quite slushy. Walking sucked but it was still better than the deep snow, I think.
-
Drag sucked. Friday was mostly snow but by Saturday just before the rain started up there it began turning into water under the snow and getting slushy. Maybe we will get lucky and the top will just become a white crusty layer. Overnight low calling for low teens Friday night.
-
Last night and this morning the snow still on the ice was hard and crusty. Very easy walk
-
I'm sure we will see water forming on top of the ice during derby. All those holes and weight on top. >:(
-
Hey big guy I'll be the one with the motorized walker and a blue clam hub. Do you think I'll need a registration for it lol. Get there as early as possible. Have fun and good luck guys

I think there will be hundreds of "Beer tents" out there!
-
you got that right
-
I hope the 15"-17" class of Walleye that now dominate the RES don't take a catch & release beating during this event! A little worries about that. A lot of "non fishermen" will be in attendance

-
I've never seen so many largemouth... prolly got 20 in 4 trips to the dead sea this year. 2 maybe in 30 years prior.

Not going to make it up for the derby today :-\ You kids have fun and good luck!! Leave a few in there for me! ;D
-
What's leading down there?
-
Wow I got 17 walleye biggest 17 1/2 " 3 crappie 8". No keepers
-
Darn. I think the winning crappie was 13 1/4". I got a 14" last Saturday. 😠😠
-
I think the winner (walleye) was in excess of 6lbs, 23 or 24 inches (or did I hear right that someone came in later with a 29" eye?), and the crappie was a bit over 13". I wasn't paying attention to the announcer most of the day because all we were catching were dinks, shorts and smallies. We were in 21' right in front of the security trailer.
My son ended up with a bucket full of tip ups, wasn't all bad. ;)
-
Yeah. They take good care of the kids. Like to load them up with goodies. Took my grandson for his first ever ice fishing. Got a 8" gill but wanted to take it up to judges stand. It wasn't a winner by no means but they gave him a bunch of stuff anyways. Got me a new fishing partner. ;D
-
That is what it's all about! Hope Howard from channel 12 does a good write up! Great day of free fishing in NYS! And a great day for all fishers!
-
Glad you guys had fun!! Wish I could have been there but my girls are too young / not interested and focused enough to fish with me yet. I still have hope for the 5 year old though! We ended up going skiing instead before we lose what's left of the snow. The derby will still be around for me long after they grow up!! Still bummed I had to miss it though :-\
-
Had a fun time at the crappie derby , and nice to get back out on the whitney point. It was good to me earlier this winter , but yesterday it was just a mess of short walleye but only 1 crappie. I was pumped when I pulled up the crappie....put it in a bucket of water , and made the loooong walk to the judges measurement stand. I did not win , but it was fun . Then long walk back ....machine next year.
The announcer did say the leading walleye was 28 inches.
I have only been to 1 other crappie derby, and that was over 15 years ago. I was shocked when I registered yesterday and the guy says "2 bucks".......2 bucks!!! A medium coffee at Dunkin Donuts costs more than that ! A real bargain , and a real family affair out there on the ice. They even gave out all you can eat ice cream to any kids that wanted some ,.... very nice of them to do that for the kids. There was an unreal amount of people out there on the ice yesterday...my registration number was 5 thousand three hundred ninety eight (5398)...great turn out.
I had talked to Ed , owner of Davids bait up the road there in Lisle and he said there is going to be a petition soon to the DEC from some concerned fishing groups about why the exploding walleye population and the declining crappie and panfish population at whitney point.
-
Caught a ton of fish yesterday, just no keepers of any kind. It's been a long time since I've fished the derby but was pretty good time
After I left my buddy who was still there calls me and says the announcer was talking about someone that took a dump on the ice. That's some reel class right there
-
yeah them darn walleyes ....worse then pickerel ..... :roflmao: I blame it all on bigal
-
It's a toss up.... 6 of fishing yesterday would of had our limits of walleye easily if it were 15" and 3 .hell 15" and 5 probably. Do they drop the size limit for 2 years or put tigers back in like the 80's and 90's to "thin the heard"? But that will take years.... in my opinion there are too many walleyes for any substantial growth. How many years are we going to keep saying should be good next year? Then it's the same old same old 16-17 3/4 inch fish...granted been catching more keepers this year but there has to be away to even up the numbers. 2 keeper walleye outta 40+ yesterday isnt very balanced. Hopefully the biologists figure it out. Oneida lake is just fine at 15"and 3
Maybe 1 year at that size limit would do miracles?
-
The petition should be against having the crappie Derby. That's what hurts that fishery the most. Not the exploding walleye population. People taking undersized fish. Seen it with my own two eyes yesterday. Had to warn them. Garbage on the ice. All the machines destroying the ice. And drunken idiots. Not to mention the thousands of fish that were takin out of there yesterday by people who never come here other than for the crappie Derby
If there was thousands of crappie taken out yesterday it's got to be news to me. From what I hear they had a couple of 15 minute derbies that got no fish entered. Of the group of guys I fished with not one keeper to be had. I highly doubt thousands were taken out. At least not legal sized ones.
-
Lmao @ thousands of fish being taken yesterday....
I went there today and got half a limit of gills. So there’s still fish there, guys.

Hi all, would like to give another persons perspective.
Total times fishing at W.P. is twice.
Yesterday in the derby and on a whim ice fishing about 8 years ago. I had no previous knowledge of the lake really, but read there was a lot of walleye in there and there aren't many walleye in my local waters and frankly I wanted get one thru the ice as a personal achievement. I looked at the basic map and figured I would try to hit the channel, but frankly I'm pretty sure I missed it slightly. Well there was no doubt a lot of walleye in there. I caught 3 or 4
in a couple hours up to about 17". I caught a couple perch on jigs. That was it.
Yesterday me my wife and daughter entered the derby after years of contemplating and years of cancelled tourneys due to no ice.
Total yesterday 3 walleye up to about 15 or 16 inches, One nice perch fell off at the hole, daughter had another unknown that came undone.
Conclusion: not much has changed.
IMO: It's a nice deal for someone that wants to enter a competition for not a big cash outlay. Where all fishing has some impact I don't think people should worry about the derby doing much harm. In the area I was in I counted about 147 shacks and that wasn't even half of what was out there. Within the area that I could see there was probably well over 100 tip ups out. Other than my tip ups all day I witnessed maybe 3 or 4 flags go up. That's pretty poor, but it really means nothing other than nobody was cleaning out any species where I was. In fact truth be told I think the amount of crappie caught there yesterday would barely fill a fry pan(correct me if anybody witnessed different). That could mean populations changed. They should survey and maybe get a hold on it. One thing for sure crappies can be very elusive thru the ice. I have found mother lodes of crappie that wouldn't think of biting my offerings. No I am not a crappie expert but I have caught plenty thru the ice. Some lakes I catch them open water but can't buy one thru the ice. They seem different in every lake. Generally they are in certain areas only, but they also move due to many factors.
You usually have to learn about good areas to fish them thru experience so I really didn't have big hopes for us and we zero'ed on crappie. We all had a good time and our hats go off to the derby volunteers that make it happen.
If I have anything negative at all to say it would be how I got there about 445:AM and there where a whole bunch of people already set up. That is ok but I would say 90 percent of the people were fishing. Legal ? Yes. Fairplay? No.
Also does anybody besides me get suspicious when several fish come in at 8:am and not much after that? I like to think most play it straight. But you have to be naive to think there are not cheaters. You gotta wonder, were these 3:AM fish? Fish from who knows where the days prior? Oh well my attitude is you just have to outfish the cheaters but that's not easy or fair.
If too many walleye are spoiling crappie populations, that is bad for a organization trying to do a crappie derby long term, but to change laws willy nilly I just don't know. The best you probably can do is surveys of fish and their stomach contents. These walleye have to eat something. But are they bothering the crappie? Are they interrupting the crappie spawn? I don't know but these are some of the questions that need to be answered. All I know is there is a good population of walleye in there and I wish there were more keepers. They maybe should see if they are making reasonable growth rates by age class. If they are, leave them be, they will get bigger, if not maybe thin the herd with a slot limit. Again just some ideas.
-
Well said Crawlerman.  And as far as the guy who said something about years and years of derbies they haven't had one since 2015. That should have helped the population of fish. And wondering what they do with the profits. What profits? At $2 per entry and giving away thousands of dollars in prizes there isn't much of a profit. They announced at the derby it was not for a profit but rather than having a family friendly derby which I believe they accomplished.
-
the whitney point derby when they can have it is a family based derby to be enjoyed by families every child that takes a fish up is a winner! it is a not for profit derby no one makes money! it's for fun and to get families fishing and spending time together ......holeman if that lake can't afford to loss 2000 fish then it should be drained and used for farm land ..... and I think this is the first derby in 4 years .......this derby didn't hurt the fish population at all ,it however was enjoyed by a lot of people memories were made ... and children introduced to fishing and the outdoors ....husbands and wives enjoyed a day on the lake friends and family laughed cooked out enjoyed the day ..... if you have a problem with that you should take up golf at the country club ....
bigal what did I tell you .... some people just got to complain .....glad you and your family had fun ^5
-
holeman some kid just kicked a ball in your yard ,if you hurry you can get it before he does ...... :roflmao:
-
I've ice fished all my life. I like to golf at the country club too! ;D
-
Its not just a private organization running it. The sportsmen club is a group anyone can join. The county parks department has a big hand in it too. As far as not much cash given back in prize money I beg to differ. Have you ever won any of the 28 mini derbies they have thru out the day? Well I have. And I will tell you my prize was in excess of $100 in value and almost half of that was in cash. I can only imagine how much cash is given out. Trapper. Right on my friend.
-
here is intelligent conversation there is no documented evidence showing this or any other derby has hurt the fish population at all . this derby which has been going on since 1973 has become a family event where most the prize money is now spent on youngsters ,it is looked forward to by many fisherman and families .... which makes me wonder ,what is fishing and being a sportsman about? well hole it's about passing and sharing the outdoors with children and family ..... I read your post and it seems to me you have a lot of trouble catching "keeper" fish don't blame that on families having fun for one day of the year !
as of 2015 the dec study showed that of the netted fish 184 ...only 9 would be legal fish over 18 inches ,that's 5 percent
of the crappies caught it was very low with 35 fish caught 34 were 9 inches or bigger ....
a lot of this is probably due to the lack of cover for fish , brush piles have been placed in the lake by the dec and area sportsmen also the state has been working to add structure by cutting deep pools and channels and making submerged humps ........ my personal thoughts are the fish population suffered from water releases and from flooding in the past also lack of structure hurts the fish and the bait fish .... of course your walleyes aren't the problem they been in there since before I was born and they are not stocked they are natives ..... now getting back to your inability to catch a keeper walleye isn't because your doing anything wrong it's because they simply aren't there, and it's not from a derby the study was done in 2015 and there hasn't been a derby since then ! low crappie count in 2015 ...hasn't been a derby since then ......still a low count ...then the derby isn't the reason my opinion ...lack of cover not much structure ,fluctuating water levels and run off ,that's your problems .
-
I've ice fished all my life. I like to golf at the country club too! ;D
pssst I fish behind a golf course does that count :roflmao:
and I think we can use your golf card to get us out on the ice and not register it ....wait that's a different thread :roflmao:
-
Ok time to chime in here ...holeman or what ever man you are...there is no shortage of crappies in there trust me i caught over my limit yup all shorts..i would say at 30 shorts ...i think the group a guys i was with we must a caught ohhhh about 20 eyes all shorts one keeper eye .and i couldnt be happier for the person that caught it..i was in bigals group...and there was at 3 ...15 minute derbies with no crappie...the derby doent hurt the lake..been 3 yrs without one..its basiclly a family fun derby day...who cares where the extra cash goes they do have cash payouts to...like al said thousnads a dollars in prizes..what does a snowmobile or quad do to the fish..nothing..
-
Yes i do disagree with junk being left on ice...but im sure alot a money from goes to alot of the prizes for the kids..i know one thing when bigals grandson got that gill won some goodies he was the happiest person in our group...they really put alot a efforts into making kids happy and having a good time...its all about a fun time and memories...you shooting everyone down like its a crime to have a derby..yea some ppl it was there first time ice fishing probably and hey us anglers mite have to say hey thats to small you have to let it go no big deal.....when ppl were doing something they announced it to stop or they wouldnt like who they were calling...but i still dont c what a sled or wheeler does to the fish...thats like saying..thats like saying me swimming in the lake hurts the fish to...
-
I guess my kayak with me in it hurts the fish to on open water...must b the wheelers run over fish and kill them along with sleds...thats like me paddling my kayak i cant use my paddles i mite knock a fish out..think you need to go fishing and stop complaing about a derby...i know a person that goes out there and clobbers big crappies and big eyes..he doesnt post on here much bcause he gets slammed for it i think thats wrong..thisbsite is for infoband having fun sharing knowledge..i have more if we must continue about a derby that happens every 3 or 4 yrs if were lucky...
-
There is a grumpy old mans thread i know they sent me there already once...
-
Your complainig about the derby aboitb4 wheelers sleds
Everyone has an opinion thats my opinion ..yea i went through the ice it happens learning expierence i shared with everyone...my word of wisdom on that was ...watch your every step on the ice
-
Thanks for the info big guy but if you look back I was not complaining about the crappie . I tend not to listen to what you say though because anyone who falls through the ice as much as you can't be to bright . Now I have not thrown any insult to anyone first . Just want to get different opinions. Now we can either talk like man instead of teenage girls. Or we can meet for coffee I will buy and have a conversation. Where insults can be met with a response.i don't need this b.s. from cyber tough guys . You will be happy to know I am deleting my profile. As this is more of a caddy click of school girls can it is fishermen sharing information and opinions. Have a good night ladies I have to work in the morning some of you should try it sometime
You are an absolute joke. Good riddance!

Hold on now trap I'm recently retired so I know about the trips to the mailbox too! How do you think I have time to ice fish AND go to the country club? Ive fished Whitney Point a few times over the years and for my two cents don't think its worth the time already spent here arguing just why it sucks. Just my opinion though I guess some people catch a few fish there. I

I have fished it a bit my self and truth it's a nice local hole for people that are close ....and they call it the dead sea for a reason ..... it's a good place for a crappie derby where kids and families can have fun ... and welcome to the world of retirement ^5 I now have a part time job of keeping bigal and big guy out of trouble .....
-
Well on a lighter note.... I caught my PB white sucker at the derby if that's worth anything hahaha, 22" and 4lb. I've never caught a sucker through the ice so that was an experience on its own. Got it on a tiny tungsten jig with a 1" Berkley plastic too, seems crazy!

Hi there new to ice shanty. I'm from the Binghamton area and haven't been up that way in a couple weeks. Did they ever open keible Rd? And how was the ice on the channel? This rain and warm weather has really hurt the ice on the smaller pond I've been fishing lately. Was out last night and only 5 inches left! Rain today makes it a no go.

welcome to the site. The ice on the lake was 15 plus inches for the derby. As a public employee I was off today for the holiday and got back up to the lake. Too bad holeman had to work. 😁 The lake must have made more ice since Saturday as the holes from the derby were frozen back over. And yes, the back road along the lake has reopened but is not maintained. Oh yeah. My bucket wasn't empty today. ;D

Nice one Mack2..I have never got one through the ice. I heard the announcer mention about a big sucker being caught. I also heard there was some carp caught too. ...one really big one.
Did you win the $ money in the sucker division...or did they lump the suckers and carp in the same money pool?
-
welcome to the site. Oh yeah. My bucket wasn't empty today. ;D
Hey thanks for the answer. Glad you caught a couple. I'll be up this afternoon to give it a shot.

Trapper mentioned about the water releases & drawdowns being part of the problem with the crappie there...very good point. When I was talking to Ed at Davids Bait , I forgot that he mentioned about that might be in the petition too. He said there have been water release drawdowns at some critical times. He said that it is really harmful when they draw down the water at different ,critical times of the year after the spawn etc..... He said they have drawn down water in December too, leaving the shallows and shore line mud and weeds high and dry and susceptible to flash , then solid freezing , which is harmful to the bugs , and critters living in that mud, and roots of the plants.where the tiny young bait and crappie feed and hide come summer. I did not ask him who calls for the drawdowns...Army Corp ? not sure.
I also forgot to mention that the Broome Cty. area underwater rescue and ice rescue team was there at the crappie derby, giving demonstrations on ice safety and ice rescues and recovery....which hundreds of people found interesting, informative and i'm sure made some first time ice fishing families feel safer out there. Really nice of those guy's doing what they do, putting there lives on the line to save someone who might get in trouble out on the ice...at any time day or night.
Again, Great family derby,.... a few changes could be made as mentioned earlier... but the organizers did a great job trying to make most everyone happy . ...heck they even had 2 guys with power augers drilling holes for FREE for families, first timers who had no auger, anyone who could not start their auger, or others whose auger was to dull to cut !! They made announcement after announcement about that and they were running around all morning cutting hundreds of holes for folks!!
Looking forward to next year even if the keeper crappie fishing is ...well...crappie. ;)

How’s the rain been there today? Falling hard or just a moderate drizzle?
-
Just something to keep in the back of your mind... dams and reservoirs serve the primary purpose, aside from drinking water, of flood control and are typically managed as such. Recreational purposes like boating and fishing are important considerations, but are secondary to protecting the public downstream. The Army Corp doesn't give a rat's patuty about the bugs in the weed beds like we do... That's not really their job. Can't fault them for that- and since my family's farm is in the river valley downstream, I'm grateful that it is managed the way it is
-
Moderate drizzle most of day. Got me home sooner than I hoped.
-

Not bad. A decent bit of water on the ice made for a fun walk but the rain was fairly light. 5 walleye one legal at 19". The ice was still solid and over a foot thick on the channel. This week's forecast has me worried though...
-
Heeeessss baaaacccckkkkk 😃😃😃😃😃

that's exactly what it is for ! and I believe it was used to control the flow of water when loggers were drifting logs down the river to be picked up and shipped over seas years ago

not to worry unless you get invited out for coffee ;D

No the suckers and carp were in the same division so I didn't have a chance with the sucker.
-
Does anybody have any luck catching cats or bullhead through the ice here? I got a bullhead last night on a little jig tipped with spikes. Does anyone target them and if so where?
-
I have never targeted bullheads threw the ice but late feb and march you do seem to get a few
-
I stopped my car last week in that pull-off overlooking the dam and saw a few guy's casting from shore a ways downstream of the spillway. Are the same walleye special regulations in effect there as they are in the lake ?
{ 18" and 3}

Nope! It’s 15” and 5. I’ve heard of guys getting their limits quite a bit this season, too. It’s probably like a tsunami right now with all the water coming out of the dam, though.
-
Choo Choo Jay and I fish it. It is usually pretty good if you are not there during flood conditions.

Thanks Tank. Tell Dark Cloud Jay Hi for me.

I saw one lantern this evening below the islands off Keible. Not sure how he got out there gate was closed. I took one look at the shore and headed home .
-
Pond area is still accessible and fishable!!! Don't go to the other side of the lake though. The channel is unsafe as are the north and south ends. Just be cautious and use your spud.
-
Awesome! :o How much ice on the pond? And what is the shore looking like heading out of Dorchester to get to the pond? Maybe I'll try to head up this weekend. Thanks for the info!! ;D
-
I only went out about 50 yds with my spud but getting on was easy at the main parking area. I just stopped in quick to see if it was good and was convinced that it was. There had to be a good 6". As I said, be cautious and bring a spud as the ice thickness can vary this time of year. Shore was locked up where I got on.
-
Thanks, I'll post the results if I make it out
-
Anyone hear anything on the derby? I feel like there is normally an update on their website by now
-
Saturday Feb. 16th is the scheduled day. It is posted on their Facebook page. Internet website not yet updated.
-
heard people were out there this weekend.
-
Hope so. (Just making a post for changed account)
-
1 3/4"-2" tonight near the pond area. Don't know about the rest of the lake, but I would just go elsewhere if I were you. Didn't feel very safe out there. No bites, just lookers ::)
-
anyone know where i can find some ronnie birds?
-
1 to 2 inch on the pond mean less on the channel I don't feel safe with atleast 4 inches personally but soon hope fully
-
Only looked skimmed over on weekend. Needs more time guys
-
Al it's only skimmed over :roflmao:
-
Stopped by park today. Talked to a couple of guys just coming off ice. They said around 9" of ice but lots of water on top. No fun dragging either. >:(

Nice meeting you out there today bigal.

You too Randy. Wish you guys got more fish. You'll get them next time. ::)
-
Al you making friends again😂😂🤣
-
You bet.
-
Wondering if 4WD vehicles have tried Kiebel RD since the snow/rain/snowmobile traffic
-
good luck with that
-
it was pretty rough before the storm
-
Its always rough.......we got a lot of rain, so i would bet the snow is packed down. use caution like any other off road excursion....
-
I say it's doable
-
I think it will mostly depend on if the water/ packed snow turned to straight up ice or not
-
A friend just walked out from dorcester, he did not drill a hole, Ice is solid on top, not sure how much ice though, I'd be careful around the current, had to have undermined some ice.
-
I drove out to last house. The unplowed road was all rutted up and looked pretty icy. I don't think I'm taking my SUV out there. Did see a couple of shelters out on that side about quarter mile up so someone drove out there.
-
What's the matter Al you chicken 😂😂😂😂🤣
-
Come on down here and you drive out that road. Then I'll ride with you. ;D ;D
-
Ok next Saturday😂😂😂🤣...ohhhh wait u gotta work... :roflmao: :roflmao:
-
Wondering if 4WD vehicles have tried Kiebel RD since the snow/rain/snowmobile traffic
There were vehicles driving out the road throughout the day on Saturday. The slushy crap from the rain froze up fast. Lots of ice on the pond and out to 22 FOW.
Anyone making plans for Friday? I'm thinking of taking a vacation day and starting the weekend early.

This thread is as tight lipped as the crappies are in the resavor

I think I got the last 2 last week. ;D ;D

Big al not quite. I got a few on Monday and released 1 (on accident). There's 1 left! I say we hold a derby to see who can catch it!

Lol, I ALMOST posted the same thing an hour before you but decided to keep my mouth shut. Glad you thought the same thing I did! Way to finish them off Al

Hey guys,
I'm coming to the area to see my girlfriend's mom this weekend. I'm hoping to sneak out Sunday morning to fish for a couple hours.
I don't expect you to give up your favorite spots, but can you tell me the best place to park if I don't have a 4wd. I have a sled and don't mind walking a bit to get to a decent spot.
Thanks in advance.
BTW, If any of you are ever down in the Westchester/Putnam area and want to get on some nice Browns, shoot me a PM and I'll get you hooked up.

I heard the water level is up and the ice is floating at the moment, can’t confirm as I haven’t seen it first hand though.

If that is the case, and it is not fishable this weekend, any suggestions for other bodies of water near Edicott?

could try long pond in Smithville.

to many alligators there anyways

You are more likely to catch an alligator than a crappie

this whitey is still in WP too (released)... keepers few and far between so far this year, no big numbers

My daughter is asking to fish everyday this week what's to go to Whitney point but have heard mixed reports I see as of tomorrow night we will be back in the teens is it fishable .. safe I e and shore ice was on it Sunday and had over 12 inches but now we have had spring for a week and I have no idea .....everyone's been so happy about the weather and I'm over here like this sucks I want the cold back and snow...no matter what I gotta get my daughter on ice and quick or I'm gonna be in the dog house
-
I think we're gonna need the boat for them rapport derby boys😂😂😂😂😁
-
Looks like the water level is up almost 3'. I planned on taking a trip over the hill on Sunday.
https://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=bgm&gage=witn6
-
I’m sure we will be back on before ice out, but I have a hard time believing the derby will be on.
-
I took a drive out to Dorchester park Friday afternoon. Didn't see any open areas but shoreline had water around. So getting on the ice was not possible. They are dumping a lot of water out of the lake so hopefully the lake will go back down and we can get back on in a short time.
-
Taking a trip to check the ice and water level shortly hopefully the cold weather and wind has brought the wind-chill down enough that we may be able to fish Sunday or Monday will update soon as long as they have got the water level down in the lake shore ice should start freezing up... But I can't see them having the Derby with loosing all the shore Ice a week before thousands hit the ice seems like a big liability issue but crazier things have happened
-
I talked to a guy who is a member of the club who puts on the derby. He said a decision will be made on Monday. They believe the ice may be fine but the shoreline must be good. Right now it's not. They need to be able to drive vehicles out on the ice for set up and such. The bridge on North end of lake is currently closed due to the high water. Let's all hope for the best and wait until Monday and see what happens.
-
Thanks for the heads up guys!
-
Is it possible to get out on foot Al?
-
It's most definitely fishable I'm here now just talked to a guy with a four wheeler on the ice said ice is still strong but water clarity is horrible out of 20 guys they have only marked four fish and haven't caught any and they all are getting on at Dorchester I'm on the other side by the seasonal and it is unsafe to get on and the road is barricaded off but I'm heading home and may give it a try tonight hope this helps buy there's 15 shanty's I can count right now so it's fishable just not ideal conditions
-
Thanks!
-
Not looking good for tomorrow I'm thinking to make a deduction on derby
-
I took my crazy X girlfriend out for a few hours. There is 13"-14" of fine ice. If cancelled it's because of the refrozen mess left behind where the creek comes in. They could rope it off and have the derby with no issues. One 17" Walleye and a few misses is what I managed
-
There was refroze stuff left on ice for last year's derby. We were set up just off it. Lots of big ice chunks were around. Show went on anyways. Let's hope it does again. ;D
-
Just saw on the website it’s cancelled
-
Just saw on the website it’s cancelled
Well that's a huge bummer.
-
Have to wait another year. :%$#!: :%$#!: :%$#!:
-
Probably not the worst thing, not exactly like guys are killing crappies out there this year. Seems like last year they were practically begging for people to turn one in every 15 minutes
-
Crappies don't have a chance with the thousands of juvenile walleye in that lake
-
Crappies don't have a chance with the thousands of juvenile walleye in that lake
Yeah that and the lack of weed beds and baitfish
-
Why don’t they throw brush piles into the lake to make cover for the fish?
-
The question is who would "they" be? The DEC. That is probably not going to happen. I suppose you could do it yourself but that would probably be frowned upon. This is why.
-
I've been told that several years ago there were several brush piles put into the lake. I think it was the sportmans club that did it. I remember not that long ago seeing piles of cinder blocks being put on the ice waiting for the ice to melt. There is also a big area that has stumps in it where they cut trees down when they built the reservoir.
-
There are far more weeds now than there ever was since they are keeping the water up but the only variable I can see from the crappie heyday of the 70's and 80's is the walleye population. It used to be tip down city out there but there were plenty of fish. Back then walleyes were few and far between and there were more largemouth and a few nice pike. People didn't have electronics but you could go out anywhere in the channel or the old pond in the evening and put fatheads down and kill the crappies by the light of a lantern until you had all you wanted. I don't think it can be both an eye and crappie lake and if DEC is serious about bringing back crappies they need to lower the size limit on the eyes to 15" and let people keep 5 for a while to knock them down and see what happens.
-

Sounds like a plan!
-
That's a good plan there. It gets pretty discouraging pulling out all those walleye that are just under the legal limit as it stands now. I'll be happy to help reduce the population if they lower the size limit. ;D ;D
-
Sounds like a plan!
I don't see why not. Just like Canadarago when DEC adjusted the size up to 18" and 3 after the alewifes wiped out the natural reproduction on the eyes why can't they go to the standard state general limit at 15" and 5 for a while and see if it helps. I think more anglers if surveyed would like to see better crappie fishing as that's what the reservoir has been traditionally known for. There's also that thing called a "Crappie Derby" that's only been going on for a long time and having people catch more crappies again might make it better.
-
That and the dude who was busted a few yrs back with buckets of them. Undersized and way more than his limit.
-
The funny thing about this is the Crappie's are still there but the feeding window's are brief. There was a day three weeks ago I could have caught a limit and another limit. Not a single fish was under 12" It was mid day and made no sense. They feed when they want to feed
-
Sometimes I think ppl want that instant gratification and have no patience.
-

Sounds like a great day. Maybe all the crappies in the lake headed to your spot, Mr. Crappie Whisperer :)
-
All I can say is that it was less than 10 feet of water :)

Nice there are still a few in there and every once in a while you land on them. Keeps you coming back.
-
As mono said they are there I have had a great time catching crappies there this year most of them 11 to 13 inches I also did great on them in the summer wife and I take 8 to 10 just enough for dinner and throw the rest back
-
All I can say is that it was less than 10 feet of water :)
Now I know your spot! ;D
-
hahahahah - Narrows it right down huh? BUT, been there twice since with zero crappies. That's fishing
-
Is everyone still planning on hitting WP on Saturday even without the derby? How's the shore since the water level dropped?
-
The shorelines are cockeyed from going up and then back down. But solid. No issues
-
Thanks mono! Let's hope the rain on Friday is minimal.
-
Fished the Res yesterday with my son home from college.....pretty good bite from 2-5......Fish fry today!!

So haven't been in town since the beginning of the month, Is there still fishable ice? And best area to access if there is ice?
-
I was on lake today. I was the only one on lake as far as I could tell. Must be at least 16" ice in front of the park. Fished most of morning until wind picked up and it started to rain. Was on North end this past Monday so I'd say you can access lake wherever you want.
-
Nice there are still a few in there and every once in a while you land on them. Keeps you coming back.
yes....landed on a bunch of nice sized, 11-12 inch class whitey's a few days before the derby was scheduled, but could only get a few to bite over several hours... looker after looker...frustrating

Entered my 4th calendar month of ice fishing yesterday with the kids. They rode around on the snowmobile and I fished. 2 dandy keeper Walleyes and 2 Perch. One of the Perch looked like a football. Released one Walleye and kept one because it ate the large treble. Gave them to a group of guys a few hundred yards down the ice as I have lots of fillets frozen up. Good times, great long season
-
This page hasn’t been resurrected in awhile, personally feeling that the derby won’t be happening again this year, but isn’t it odd that the website hasn’t been updated at all? I’ve only seen one post on Facebook even listing a date for this year. Just wondered if anyone had heard anything?
-
I'm guessing that they are waiting it out to see if there's a remote chance it will really be happening. The lake hasn't been too good to us this year at making and keeping the ice. ☹️
-
I have about 2 doz. frisky fat head minnows with bait receipt for free contact me.
-
Derby is scheduled for the 15th. Who wants to bet it will be cancelled? >:( >:(
-
Yeah it definitely seems like a long shot this year...
Has anyone been out fishing on Whitney lately? Wondering if there is at least enough ice to support me and some minnows... Thanks!
-
There 4-7” in most places but bite is slow and hard to come by

Was out today - put in opposite the park. Ice was in the ~4” range; any less and I’d not have stayed. Fishing was slow.

Just read that on their website... :-\ not really surprised I guess. Maybe next year

How’s the ice ?

How’s the ice ?
Getting buried under snow...
-
Fished last night from 4-9.....several small crappies and walleyes. Rock bass came through periodically...they were nice sized so I kept 6 for a meal.
I was near the islands...Ice was around 5 inches and the slush was not nearly as bad as i thought it would be.

Anyone been out there since the 9th trying to Get current conditions head up that way in the morning
-
Good ice no fish
-
On Sunday, 3 of us managed one bluegill and one 14" eye (dozens of lookers). The group next to us landed what looked to be a 5# eye. This was in the pond. Lots of ice, some slick spots, bring creepers.
-
February 19, 2022….hopefully!

What's up gang!!
Going out tomorrow. How is the ice? Debating rather to bring sidexside or not.
-
Going tomorrow as well 7 inches last I heard
-
Going tomorrow as well 7 inches last I heard
That's what I heard too. I'd like 8 for sidexside.
-
With all the snow on top I think you will be ok
-
I hit the lake this afternoon in front of the park. Hard to believe that two weeks ago that area was wide open and there had to be a good 7" of ice and all black ice to boot. Sporty you should be fine.. I saw sleds and wheelers out there today.

Hit 5 eyes all 16-17 one big crappie.

i don't understand why people keep fishing whitney point i honestly haven't heard of people hammering fish in that place in fifty years and all the good eyes i heard of were caught below the dam ,in the past 25 years anyway the derby hasn't had many fish caught years ago i remember catching 7 gal buckets full of those big white crappies those days are gone , use to be a hell of a night bite out there too
-
We actually did ok last year most trips out I was there today definitely slow
-
years ago i loved fishing it but then it seemed to die .....i would love to see it make a good come back

I hit it because it's the only spot within an hour of me other that the Susquehanna River and Cayuta (which is also a dead sea). Plus, every now and then I run into BigAl and you know how entertaining that can be! ;D I wish the reservoir would recover to its prime again also! The eyes seem to get to 17 inches and stay there. I know there are some nice ones to be had, buy they seem to be few and far between.
-
Jigged up a 20" near 3 pounder yesterday on the pond. She was tasty.
-
Fished Sunday from 6-11 Good ice 7 inches. 4 short Walleyes 1 19 Incher, a few nice perch and a few 10+ in crappies....oh and a big bluegill
Kind of a strange mix given my location....

they should lower the size to 15 inches on those eyes you guys get them out of there and your pan fish would come right cack i bet they eat those pan fish right up before they get more then a couple inches long

Even with a smitty sled, it was a bit of a tough drag out on Sunday. I said the heck with this and started drilling holes in 17fow.

Looks like I'll be going back to WP tomorrow since I haven't seen any posts on the south side of Owasco here or on FaceBook.

I Know it's early but does anyone think the Derby will be a go this year?
-
My neighbor just put his quad in my garage to melt the slush off it so be careful out there with machines

I'm optimistic the snow/slush on top will do more liquefying this week then refreeze, that should get it about where it needs to be.
-
Fished the Res yesterday afternoon 1-5....super slow till 330 then the walleye bite lit up till i left!! Few perch mixed in...
Around 10 inches of ice with 3 inches of slush under the snow.

Monkeyyboness you exclusively fishing at night? Jigging or tipups? You seem to be the only one every year who slams em there.
-
Monkeyyboness are you moving around a lot or waiting for them to come to you?i used to fish afternoons and the a couple hours into the dark and has some pretty good trips But the wife had a bad experience one night when the top slush layer kept breaking through. There was 14” good inches of black ice at that time. But it didn’t matter.she was in freak out mode.We had to sit in the truck for almost a half hour before she stopped shaking. So she refused to fish there at night. Now she doesn’t ice fish anymore and I totally forgot to give it a try late. Thanks for the reminder

Wind was rough today and pretty slick out there definitely need cleats
-
Raidio news says derby might be cancelled if reservoir has to be lowered due to flooding
-
Well that's some BS especially for those who are pre-registered. Whatta they gonna wait until the night before?
-
Looks like the real-time graph is just starting to climb in the last half hour. Has not been the amount of rain predicted so far.......I can not make the derby due to work but let's hope the rivers levels and ice jams do not require the need to raise the lake level too much!!

-
Wind forecast is pretty bad as well I was there yesterday and they said 16 mph it was way higher tomorrow calling for over 25 mph
-
Derby is cancelled.

go on the reports and conditions page and see the Whitney Point thread. Think you'll see your answer when you see the video a guy posted. Lots of open water

That and this lousy weather huh? :%$#!: :%$#!:

I was looking forward to the derby this yr not looking to good again but I guess it will give the small fish another yr to get bigger and the big fish to keep getting bigger
-
One winter off won't help fish size much it might be a fairly long body of water but not really much depth it gets hammered all summer to I don't think it will ever have much for good sized fish we ice fish pretty hard when we can and usually only keep a couple eyes all season just doesn't produce like most lakes

you can still come down to fish. Just bring your kayak

Is the bait shop open in Chenango Forks? Is there a secret greeting or a handshake for Ice Shanty members? I normally fish alone and wondered how to tell if anyone was from I. S.?
-
What bait shop is in chenango I am new to the area thanks in advance
-
Just talked to the guy at Wayner's in Chenango Forks. They are open Wed-Sun 8 AM to 6 PM. They are out of minnows but hoping for a shipment this week. Probably a good idea to call first. 607-204-0428.

If we told ya, we'd have to kill ya.
-
Theres a a outdoor store in owego. Lock and load they also sell minnows. Might be a drive but they are open 6 days a week. Closed on Sundays.
-
I am close to them but they are a little expensive for bait
-
I understand that. But with two places to buy bait withing 30 miles. If you need them and they got them i guess it comes down to how bad you want them. Just my opinion.
-
Call Lock and Load first. A lot of times they are out of minnows. I don't think they get very many in at a time. They are more of a gun and bow shop than a fishing store, but they have a few things for hard and soft water. It's a little farther away from WP, but the Athens, PA Agway has always had fatheads and shiners every time I've gone there. They usually have waxies and meal worms also and are hit or miss on spikes. It's not bad for me though because I live half way between the two stores...
-
We are going to Agway this morning if they get there delivery
-
Do they give you a bait receipt at Agway?
-
I believe just the purchase receipt not a certified bait slip I didn't go worked on house instead
-
Lock and load in Owego was $4 a dozen.
-
Maybe I will order some from Amazon
-
Agway's receipt had a certified bait slip with it if I remember right. It's been almost a year since I bought any... :-\
-
Neighbor went today he didn't get one just the purchase receipt
-
If you need bait there is also hilltop bait shop outside of Nineveh. Defn call, but they’re super nice and have good bait
-
Is the ice fish able tomorrow at Whitney ?
-
It should be but make sure of every step it's been through a lot in the past couple weeks could be holes that opened up
-
Thanks greensider. It’s my first time going and likely going alone so been looking at some options I’m in Delaware but may find smaller water and shallower to play it safe. Just curious if you have any nearby suggestions for an easy first time spot just to get used to my equipment etc?. any advice appreciated from anyone. I’ve done my homework but itching to get out tomo somewhere and start learning
-
Dizzo you can pm me if you'd like. I live in Whitney Point and ice fish the lake a lot.

I think with all the minnows we had down there soaking on hooks we doubled the population of the lake! Nice morning for sure!
-
I think the fish liked your minnows better than mine. :roflmao: :roflmao:
-
Picked up some fatheads at Lock and Load. Nice little shop. Bait shops are disappearing and it's a tough business. If we don't support them we will have to trap our own before long.
-
Has anyone tried setting out a minnow trap in the winter? I know you have to fish them in the water you catch them but didn't know if anyone has tried. I used to trap some at Long Pond in the summer.
-
I have a friend with shiner and crayfish ponds he traps them in winter
-
Finally made it out on the Res Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Ice was great unfortunately it is going to take a beating this week with the warm weather. Fishing was not on fire but managed a couple meals worth each day.
Stay safe!

As most of us already figured it out but for those who don't know yet the Crappie derby has been cancelled once again. It's been like 4 years since we've had one. >:( >:(
-
The way the bite has been I would think it would not have been a good one anyway I have for the first time in my old life got skunked two trips in a row

Yeah and I know why

Does anyone know if they are hitting the spillway hard? Thanks.
-
No idea but this guy did pretty good in the reservoir!

I guess catching one perch is pretty good considering how bad the bite has been and just an FYI upper third of the res is ice free if you value your life or respect your family think twice before going on what is left
-
Does anyone know if they are hitting the spillway hard? Thanks.
I was at spillway this past Monday. Was the only one one my side of river. One guy on the other side. I never had a hit in almost 5 hours so called it a day. Didn't see the other guy do any better.
-
We were there about a week ago nada
-
Thanks, that saves a trip. By the reports sounds like one more trip to Long Pond this weekend.
-
Almost 50 tomorrow rain most of the night better bring a long plank
