Got word from the 'Dacks, as of this evening the leaves are almost at peak in Blue Mountain Lake.  Getting closer!

Hope we have some good early ice this year (mid-December, at least!) ... need to make up for lost time after last year.

Yea....I know. I'm startin' to get the "itch" myself. Two weeks ago Saturday, the Wife and I stopped at a yard sale and I bought a box of ice fishing gear....there were 7 polar tip-ups (one was a windlass) two other off-brand polar type tip-ups, a 5" Mora hand auger that looked like it might have drilled a few holes, a host of other goodies......ice scoops, creepers, depth weights, some jigs ( including a half dozen Swedish pimples) and only a few of the tip-ups even had line on them. The rest looked like they had never been used. Now, the lady had a sign on the box that said $40.00 TAKE IT ALL!!!!. I offered her $30.00 and she said...What the heck...nobody else is gonna buy this crap this time of year....IT'S YOURS!!! I probably got well over a hundred bucks worth of stuff and even though I didn't need any of it...I just couldn't pass it up..... ;D WK

With the weather today in Beacon ( NY ) it is hard to imagine fall weather getting here, let alone winter weather. It is already in the 80's on the way to 90 today. My kids are in the pool and the AC is running. Way too early to start predicting or hoping for any ice making weather.

Yeah well you can have your snow once all the lakes lock up and get a good 3-6 inches of beautiful hard black ice.

That forecast seems good  I do have a question though since I'm not an expert on lakes freezing over...Are freezing temps at night and above freezing during the day enough to form ice ??? Lets say its 12 hours above and 12 hours below freezing is that enough to ice ???

i would think it depends on how far below and above freezing you are talking. probably need to have it below freezing the whole time 'cause if it's just a skim then there's not much of a buffer.
Title: Re: First Frost
Post by: Mentiply on Nov 04, 2007, 06:33 PM
Also depends greatly on the temp of the lake and if there is any wind. If the lake is 45 there is no way you are going to create ice even if the temp is 20.

All these nice cold temps are great but lets just hope it's still cold when it counts for some good ice making. I was sick last year when it was 70 in January and the only ice near my house was in my freezer.

People should start posting water temps in addition to weather forecasts.

I woke up to 18 this morning at deer camp. But alas no snow and no deer I gotta hang one before the ice comes. I really dont want to hang my tail between my legs and shoot one in the southern zone. But what the hell im a meat hunter not a horn hunter. Nothing can beat taking an Adirondack buck though.
