Title: Cooking with a portible heater.
Post by: bubbagill on Oct 03, 2012, 06:25 PM: I am going to be buying a Mr. Buddy heater for this years season. I will be using it to cook on/over. My question for you guys is how to make the grill surface/ what do I use to make it with. Is there any thing I should not use for this because of coatings emitting toxins? I have seen some post made here where folks have made some sort of rack to hook to the front of the unit to warm/ cook with and am interested on hearing how you all went about this. Thanks so much in advance for the help.

Not really a "cooker", but more of a food "warmer" like many have stated about this idea. I guess personally I dont see why you couldnt cook with it if you dont mind grease dripping everywhere. These things definitely get HOT.

Its just a $2 paint grate from walmart cut down to size. The edge has to be removed then re-crimped on the modified grate and then bent accordingly. I like its simplicity. Requires no modification the the buddy heater at all. Easy on easy off. Can use both positions to warm food. The new style buddy heaters with the fold down handles are nice because you can fold the handle out of the way and not worry about the grate transferring heat to the handle and melting it. Ive used this a few times to warm clam chowder and a few sandwiches. Works like a charm! I recommend just getting a grate and playing around with how you want it.

Boy I forgot about that thread. I never made one, now its all I can think about. I will have to give it a try this year.

Why not just purchase a mr. heater cooker? Then all you have to do is tip on its side and start cooking. I've had mine for years and added a remote line on a 20lb cylinder and works great. Or you just use the 1lb. cylinders it's originally made for.

Post by: Layne on Oct 11, 2012, 10:58 AM: 2 years and counting for this mod on mine, I dont know how I could ever go back to eating cold meals on the lake, even just throwing your sandwhich or cold pizza on there to warm it up does wonders when your fishing in -30.

Some easy favorites are,

-ravioli, stew or soup in a can
-hot pockets
-pizza pops
-sausages wrapped in foil
-burritos
-hotdogs

Or if you want to get really fancy you can bring pretty much any leftover in a foil dish and heat it up in no time, we got pretty gourmet last year in the portables.

Post by: MB.Mud.Cat on Nov 22, 2012, 02:23 PM: Hey all. This is my first post. Just picked up a Buddy Heater. I rigged mine with a roasting rack I found around the house. Gonna try it next week in my deer blind. It holds pans, pots and mugs pretty good.

Post by: fishinnut on Jan 25, 2013, 02:37 PM: I picked up a camping style 4 cup coffee percolator. It will perc on the Portable Buddy after about 40-45 minutes. Looking forward to a nice hot cup of Joe on the ice.
