Diefenbaker Lake 2017-2018
« on: Nov 07, 2017, 10:42 AM »
It’ll be a long while before the main lake is fishable, but I’m wondering if any of the bays have ice in them.  Thanks for the reports and safe season for all.
Get outside.  It does a body and mind good!

It's still wide open. Was hoping to drill few holes on bays by Danielson but ended up at Broderick

Part of the marina at Elbow is froze over but not thick enough to walk on yet. From the boat launch to the main lake is open water. Geese are still overnighting in front of the marina office on the water.

Yesterday a couple of fellows launched a small boat at the boat launch and trolled around the marina bay. They didn't catch anything but it was a nice day to be out.  A bit of ice build up at the bottom of the ramp but a launch is doable if you are careful.

Fished a small bay on friday, found ice about the size of a couple city lots, 5” thick. Crushed walleye all day none over 3 pounds but kept a few between the two of us. Then hammered a 2 pound trout, gunna be amazing on the traeger im sure. Lotsa little hammer handles too. Great first ice for me so far.

Tried coteau today. Slow for me seen a few other groups. I have never been more excited to have some snow on ice so you can walk without using every muscle in your body. anyone else on here one of the groups out there, curious how you made out? also seen a few groups shore fishing........

What were the ice conditions at Coteau?

How far out did the ice go?

Ice cleats are a must.  That slick ice can be dangerous.  $15.  Stay safe.

Use caution is what I will say. There's a bit of ice but also open water, even right by shore. Other than coteau, I dare to say the rest of the lake is wide open. Only the Thomson arm has ice if that makes sense. We need that 20-30 below back for a few weeks.

Saskbucks I will be buying cleats, I can't believe I have never had a pair. Have the last 2 years seemed worse for needing cleats or average to everyone?

Thanks for the update.
I bought my first set of slip on cleats this year.
Can’t believe I waited this long.
Better investment than winter tires for the car which I now own too. 😀
Yes I grew up here and yes I know how to drive 😀.

Definitely been a need last few years with freeze thaw cycles we have been getting. Sucks for making ice to fish on.

If anyone plans to drive on the ice at Beaver Flats be careful at the boat launch. It is covered with a sheet of ice and is almost impossible to drive back up it again.

It's iced over today around Gardiner Dam  :) except for that perennial open spot in front of the towers.  The ice is thin in most place. For instance, Coteau Bay boat launch has 8" of ice, while the exit finger tip has less than 3". Ice is even thinner in the pump house bay on the east side of the dam.

Walk on with precaution!

Good morning all.  I am hoping to try some fishing out around the Elbow to Douglas Park area over Christmas.  Can anyone give me an update regarding ice conditions?

Thanks all

The Elbow and some of Elbow Harbour are still open water. There has been some ice fishing from the launch back. The occasional trout being caught. The Quappelle Arm is now frozen over as of yesterday. Will probabaly be walking on for a while. I did hear there was 13" of ice at the Quappelle Dam. I haven't been there yet, so I'm not 100% sure. Good luck and take care.

Thank you for the update!  It really depends on how much walking I want to do Christmas and Boxing Day. If I’m going I will for sure be walking.

Yes they hug bottom tighter than walleye. The one on Thursday smoked my line, and I had to trim 20 feet of line afterwards.
